Fun stats from XFire today, including the above, which admittedly is a guesstimate based on what and how the article stated numbers.

Of course, this needs to be taken with a grain of salt, being an opt-in data collection method. Someday even I may install it...

Other stats:

  • World of Warcraft: over 440,000 hours of gameplay on average per day.
  • Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer: 173,355 hours. This surprised me, as we play it at the office daily and I usually thought we were way behind the curve.
  • Counter-Strike: Source: 158,714 hours.
  • Guild Wars: "Second most popular MMO" is respectable. 59,199 hours puts it way into context though. Odd they think this is the "Second" most popular MMO while listing MapleStory as having out-performed it.
  • LoTRO was eight place, beaten by Eve (where I'm sure 90% of that was AFK traveling ;) ).
  • Warcraft 3 logged 41,242 hours per day. I guesstimated this beating LoTRO because if the second most played MMO having under 60k, the eight MMO has to be pretty far down there.

It'd be alot easier to compare data if I could find the stupid report.

DotA > LoTRO is probably more accurate. Who actually plays the real game of WC3 anymore?

http://www.xfire.com/cms/stats/ ?

For August, LotRO is at 9,187 hours/day with WC3 TFT at 41,242 hours/day.

Yeah my first thought was DoTA... the guys who wrote that article apparently don't count mods.  That's rather like saying Half Life is still going strong instead of CS, isn't it?

You've always been able to detect Counter-Strike though, there's simply no way in Xfire (or Steam Community for that matter) to differentiate between TFT and DotA or Garry's Mod and Zombie Survival.

Isn't the value of these numbers kind of questionable at best?

I wish someone had a website with MMO stats based on off the record discussions with developers.

Why does XFire not track EQ2? If it did I would install it.

I have never played WoW.

What I found most interesting was the popularity of Korean MMOs.

I wonder to what level this is a self-selecting community. I ran X-fire for a whie, but I saw no real point to it other than eating CPU cycles. I play exclusively MMOs so it didn't really gain anything for me.

I wonder how much the demographics of X-fire users affect this. GW and Eve I suspect both appeal to the kind of FPS/RTS users who would get more use out of x-fire. But LOTRO I would think would be the opposite--character and story driven.

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

These are good points Numtini, and I've been wondering on the same thing. They do provide some quantitative insight, but I think mostly within a specific psychographic. This is why I was somewhat surprised that MapleStory figured so high. It's basically the same sort of achiever-based DIKU as a GW or WoW, but the graphics and overall theme are so different I didn't think there'd be much crossover. One factor that could be contributing to its presence is it being available in the West for longer than other Korean MMOs in a form the off-the-street MMO player can get to (and localized).

I like the xfire concept, as it bypasses press releases and company-specific ways of reporting the data. But unless it was built into the OS by default, the overall picture it provides is slanted by the opt-in aspect.

You run x-fire before you run the game's executable.

I run x-fire all the time. I like the history of my hours played in various games, not just MMOs.  If you're a more social person it works with games better than AIM, Trillian, or whatever, too, since it doesn't minimize the game when you get a message.  (Is that still a problem? It was years ago I don't know about now.)

I am sure Turbine would like it to be doing better but LotRO does continue to sell new copies: http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/34271/BioShock-Best-Selling-PC-Game-of-August

I don't play LOTRO anymore... but comparing playtime in games with a subscription fee to games that do not isn't very accurate. A subscription based game can make a lot more profit off of a lot fewer customers depending on how they invest in content and hardware.
