My cat Guybrush is definitely staying inside more.

You guys are so cruel. Can't you read? It's his cat, Guybrush.

That's one ugly cat. He should totally keep it inside more.

Re-reading that short coyote sub-thread has made me giggle at least a dozen times this week. Thank you!  Grin

Day in the nature, and I made a new friend:

The entire place was very idyllic. One sample photo:

Not quite art, but it was a pretty nice sunset

SNIP FOR BIG

I took a few more steps to get that post centered, but that picture turned out too dark (I guess?):

Take a few more steps and set the high rise further too the right. Might balance the picture more while deemphasizing the foreground (Letting the background and sunset come out). Centered and in focus it's a picture of a pole. off ceneter and balanced it's a picture of ansunset

Second picture was probably too dark simply because of the passage of time. Film is going to be more sensitive to small light level changes than your eye is because you will be subconsciously adjusting your own aperture and also have a processor on the back end. If you could have increased the aperture that might have helped (also to deemphasize the foreground) and it's generally a good idea to aperture down* when time passes at sunset.

That is the correct terminology for increasing the size of the aperture right?

That place looks amazing!

Usual terms are "stopping the aperture (down)" and "opening the aperture (up)".

Not bad for a phone pic. They usually look great on the little phone screen but like crap on a monitor.

edit: ok, my dropbox link isn't working. It's the public link from dropbox and wrapped in the img tags, what might I be doing wrong?
re-edit: fixed. google-fu ftw! now how to scale it?
re-re-edit: never mind, I shrank it to 25% and reuploaded that. much easier to load.

And another phone pic from the same trip, this one not looking nearly as good as it does on the phone.  This is at North Myrtle Beach, but is definitely not typical of the area. View from one of the last remaining private beachfront houses.

And the same two scenes with my Nikon. The color differences are interesting. The beach pics might have been taken on different days. The waterfall pics were within a few minutes of each other, but with a brief break in the clouds. And I was playing with exposure settings with the waterfall, but had forgotten everything and didn't have my manual so I didn't get what I was after. Also had just driven 7 hours then hiked down to the bottom of that hole and back, so, excuses.

The phone pic does look great. One bit on using a DSLR - need to be more careful with focus. The physics behind the DSLR means that it's easier to get out of focus parts, and you can see that in the waterfall pic.

I had a technical oops and managed to bring my mirrorless camera out, where it promptly ran out of battery after taking 5 photos. So here's a phone photo:

And the fancy photo:

Quite right about the DSLR focus issues. Plus my vision is not what it used to be, so I can't always detect it in the little screen or viewfinder much less manually correct it. In this case this was made much worse due to trying to force the aperture as small as possible to allow an extended exposure to get the nice streaky effect with the water - but having a total brain fart (I blame the excuses listed above) and setting the aperture to as low a number as I could get it. OOOPS!  So you can see it focused quite nicely on the foreground trees (at least 100' away) but wide aperture = narrow field of view focal plane and 100' != infinity.

Fantastic photo, phone or no.  Maybe feed it to the Gimp and dial the contrast up just a hair and you could sell it.

My friend wanted to take some pictures of her Halloween costumes so we wandered into the woods.

I have some analogue photos from this shoot coming as soon as the film is developed and scanned too.

This one didn't come out as well as I hoped, I should have used a tripod and done it the same way as I did the second one above, also if I'd realised what a huge pain it is to mask out ponytails, I'd have asked her to tie her hair back out of sight...

Here are a couple of the film shots. Taken with a 35mm Spotmatic F and a Helios 44-4 lens. (the 'swirly bokeh' lens).

Just liked the atmosphere. The picture isn't edited, the scene was indeed rather eery.

Lucky timing too. A few minutes later:

Sunset on Scarif.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

I took my Fotosnaiper out the other day, which I am sure is going to get me shot by the police before too long. Anyway, I wanted to see how the lens handled fast action, so I went to the place where all the skateboarders and BMX kids hang out and shot them.

The negatives look lovely but I'm bottlenecked by my scanner for 35mm. It's fine for MF but not so much for smaller frames.

I like the first one. The second one seems to have too much going on, I'm not sure what the subject is and where I am supposed to be looking.

Thanks! I was reminded of the post Iain made about smartphone photos, and I have a bizarre habit of taking a photo everytime I walk through the park (to annoy my friends). The weather was beautiful that day and it was one of the few times I wished I had my "proper" camera with me.

No. The club is really small and doesn't do credentials. I paid for my ticket and just camped by the barrier at stage left. It was so crowded, I couldn't even lift my elbow for portrait shooting, I had to shoot upside down if I turned the camera vertical. I had my DSLR on a handgrip, my Spotmatic hanging off the crush barrier and just switched between them until I was out of film.
