Moving wow to new machine - where are the files and macros?

As the title says. Whereabouts will I find my macros, setup and layout preferences, etc? Is it the "WTF" folder? And can it just be copied straight across?

It's in the WTF folder, under 'accounts' you'll find folders for every account you've logged-in on that computer with.

Yes, you can copy it straight-across.  I did this earlier this year.

If you want to move WoW, just copy the whole World of Warcraft directory to a DVD or over the network. WoW doesn't need any fancy registry crap to work. Instead of installing WoW on my other machines I just sent the folder over the network and then made the shortcuts.

Actually, before you burn the DVD, you can get rid of the "downloader" and "patch" exe's in the main directory.  Those have been installed already, no sense wasting 1GB or more moving them.

You can also nuke the Cache folder, no sense in moving that either.

A friend came over (before I logged back onto f13 and saw the above posts) and told me to drag the whole folder across the network. It worked. Should I now nuke the "downloader", "patch" and cache dir?

I'd say Cache dir might make sense, just cause it's a new computer and you never know what bugs might arise.  The downloader and patch exe's, shrug, only if you want to save some hard drive space.  I was suggesting deleting them BEFORE the transfer so you wouldn't fill the DVD, or so you'd use up less bandwidth / transfer the game faster over the network, but you've already done that, so now it doesn't really matter.

Sounds like you sorted it out already, but I'll just add that if you ever need to transition just your UI/ Mods to a new machine, you can go to the World of Warcraft directory, go into Interface folder and copy all of the relevant files from their.  I usually Burn a disk and just load off of that if I need to bring a set-up to a new computer.

One thing you should probably do.

1) Log in
2) Move your toon to someplace not super crowded (i.e. not in the middle of IF or Ogrimmar).
3) Quit WoW.
4) Delete the WDB folder.
5) Log back in and give it a couple of seconds to reload textures into the cache (which is what the WDB is).


Just about any weird graphical anomolies in WoW can be attributed to the WDB folder taking a crap on itself. You might not be having problems now, but there is no reason not to let the new machine make it's own texture salad.

They changed the WDB folder (or moved it to be more exact) to the Cache folder around 2.0. If anyone still has a WDB folder in their main World of Warcraft directory, they should get rid of it. It's at the most benign wasting some HDD space, and at worse could cause a few problems with things not loading.

To add to this however, you would probably also want to copy all the WTF folder as well, since that is where it stores all the per character settings that the mods in the interface folder create.
