Title: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Morfiend on May 16, 2011, 11:33:57 AM
In Steams plan to make sure I never have any spare money, they have announced daily deals (http://store.steampowered.com/news/5468/).

Quote
Starting today, Steam offers a new 24-hour deal, every single day. Look for the deals each day on the front page of Steam. Or follow us on twitter or Facebook for instant notifications wherever you are!

Delicious. I can't keep up with my steam backlog of games as it is, but that won't stop me.

Hm, I think the life of my wallet depends greatly on if these will be good new sales or just old repeats....

Some of these days I will own all games and Steam can''t hurt my wallet anymore. Who is laughing then, eh Steam?

I would love some expanded wishlist functionality.  Say, for example, I wanted a copy of Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate edition but I only want to pay $20 for it.  I should be able to setup my wishlist with a "buy" amount and whenever the price drops below threshold Steam shoots me off an email/SMS.  That would help a lot for me, as it seems that I always miss the deals I really want because I'm out of town.

The fact that I haven't touched half my steam games is making me more resistant to steam sales now.  The frequency of them lessens the impact as well.  I often think I'll wait till the next inevitable sale if I'm on the fence about a game which I don't have time for currently, less and less I'm buying games just because they are cheap and I may want to play them later.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Azazel on May 16, 2011, 08:37:00 PM
Just how cheap the sale prices are will have a lot to do with how much I pony up. Along with whether I have any interest in the game. I dunno, I kind of feel like I've already got the majority of things I'd be interested in from them...

This is cool.  There are a few things floating around that I'd still love to at least pick up to hopefully play.  However, I seem to have more money than time nowadays, as I haven't bought a game for less than full price since their Christmas sale.  :|

OpFlash on sale, I got to store page to watch the video. You already own this game. Hm, how about that?

There are definitely things on the wishlist I'd like to see some deep discounts on, this could get crazy.

Supposed to be decent, actually. Made by Raven, so similar to the new Wolf (which is surprisingly good, I find), but a bit newer so a bit shinier. I just got it for 360 else Id probably pick this up.

Singularity ranges from neat to awesome, depending on how much you like games with Soviets. It's kind of like a poor man's Bioshock. Has multiple endings and they're all pretty good.

It feels a lot like a bioshock-portal hybrid.  There are puzzles the be overcome with physics from your magic powerglove, and there are mutant things to shoot in the face.  It's a nice combo.

I ma have even picked it up on PC as well, given the feedback. When I went to check out the Steam deal there was something about a trucking sim or some such instead...

The truck game was the daily deal, Singularity was one of the Midweek Madness deals, I think.

Just did a search for it - it's not there at all. Must be one of those This Game is not For You(r Region) things.

I guess if I see it mentioned here again for cheap, I'll ask about getting it gifted.

I have to say that I'm finding these daily deals pretty disappointing overall. I haven't seen anything that's tempted me at all so far. Then again, I rarely see what's on sale for some reason - they're not promoted very well.

I bought Divinity 2 when it came out and could never quite get it running properly on my Q6600/8800GTX/4gig.  I bought the Steam version on the sale yesterday to have when I upgrade, so I installed it to check it out.  They have done some CRAZY optimization with the expansion.  It runs flawlessly at well over 30fps now, even on High settings.  I only started to get a framerate dip when I turned on AA.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Sky on June 24, 2011, 08:41:16 AM
Must be, it ran great on my system with everything cranked. I did upgrade to a gtx460 when my 8800gtx died last year, but otherwise it's the same system I've had for 4-1/2 years (c2d e6600, 4GB RAM).

I won't be putting it in the rpg hall of fame, but it was a solid hack and slasher with some good moments. The only thing I didn't like was the slog through the sky fortresses, but for some reason I atypically wanted to clear them all. Lots of endless generic hordes.

Civ V is 66% off through the weekend, $17, for anyone suffering not-buyer's remorse for not-buying it earlier.

Or who is tempted by a better price - for the Summer Sale it was $24.99.

My two cents is that if you have IV and enjoy it, no reason to buy V at any price.  Unless it has improved greatly from patches in the last 6 months or so.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Kail on July 24, 2011, 05:08:36 PM
Just got it myself, and it seems fun.  The combat is way more interesting than the old doomstack stuff.

As to if you should buy it, I dunno.  There's definitely a fair contingent of the Civ faithful who don't like it, and $17 is a bit above my "buy it for curiosity's sake" threshold, but I'm not regretting my purchase so far.

I'm enjoying Civ V more than I did Civ IV, when comparing the vanilla games.  I still prefer civ IV with the BTS & Warlord x-pacs though, but that's because I enjoyed the Corporation and wider unit gameplay of BTS.  Religions were so damn boring in IV that I don't miss them in V.  Were they more like FFH's religions, I'd have a different opinion.

V's policy system is great and I really enjoy it, the hexes (now that I understand my city's radius' and can design an empire around it) and the death of the stack of doom.  I also really enjoy cities being able to take care of themselves, although I think some of the city attack mechancics place far too much focus on cranking out seige weapons and only having 2-3 high-movement military units so you can capture cities you just beat the shit out of.  (I just crushed a civ in <20 turns using 8 battleships and 4 mech. inf to leapfrog each other.)

I want to see if they can pull off anything more interesting in V's expansions.

Gods and Heroes, an MMO, is on sale for $15.  I've heard its average at best right now but has a few interesting features like minions and your own estate to dick around in.  As I'm not currently playing an MMO (World of Tanks is not an MMO IMO) I'm pretty sure I can get $15 worth of entertainment out of it.

I beta'd it and it wasn't bad. I don't think it holds up to what's out there now though. The one thing I did like was the natural feel to the outdoor lighting. It seemed more 'real' than most games.

If this had come out at the same time as EQ2, it might have had a better chance. Still, time will tell.

$17 Civ V is a steal prolly. You'll never find it lower. But I wouldn't hold my breath for an expansion. They can't even get a proper military AI rolling yet, introducing new concepts would only nerf them further.

I'm enjoying Hitman Blood Money at the moment. Sweet game. The older hitman didn't age well.

I've played a few hours so far and its not bad but its nothing spectacular either.  I've run across a few bugs and it lacks general polish but its not all bad.  You have your own little estate which gets rebuilt after doing some quests, though I'm not sure what its purpose is right now other than having a cool looking "home base".  I rolled a gladiator (4 classes now with 2 more in the future), and while the combat is your standard mmorpg fare, the healing minion I have adds to the experience and there are some well done combat animations.  One ability is like a WWE wrestling move where you don't use your weapon but instead flip humanoid enemies around in a few ways.  One of the animations looks like I'm jumping on their back and applying a sleeper hold.  I probably won't be playing past the initial 30 days but I can see some potential for something decent down the road.  It will be tough for them, though, to get past the mediocre release.

Yeah, I was in an earlier beta of this version of Gods and Heroes and it wasn't bad, but it didn't make me want to keep playing. I ended up removing it for hard drive space and not going back. It didn't suck, but I have better games to play.

Chantelise, by the people who ported Recettear, looks somewhat interesting. I'd love to see some of the small budget Japanese titles ported. If it had been co-op also would be an easy sell to the wife. A natural progression from pop-cap games as it still has the cutesy and colorful style.

My opinion as well.  Theoretically a PvP game, but there's so much grind before you can PvP I never saw any.  It's a beautiful game visually, though, if you're willing to blow $5 for a look.  I resub from time to time but the PvE murders my interest.

The level grind is the least of the grinds in Aion, everything is a soul crushing grind from getting gear to enchanting it.  Their whole enchanting/upgrading system came straight from satans asshole.

I dunno about terrible, there's just nothing really great about it.  The aesthetic is kind of boring, the scenario is goofy, the dialogue ranges from predictable cliche to WTF bad, but the gameplay itself is passable.  You point at stuff, it dies.  There's a half second delay on everything you do because MECHA, but otherwise it's fairly standard third person shooter stuff.  Probably the game's biggest failing is that it's just so vanilla.  The robots look generic, the guns are generic, the setting is generic, the characters are all generic, the story (as far as I've gotten) is generic.  Not bad per se, and there's not a lot of options if you're looking for a Mech game, though, so might be worth $7 depending on how bad you need that particular itch scratched.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals

Any of the PS2 era Armored Core games would serve you better. I guess if you need something on PC, maybe... I'm just bitter at what they did with the franchise, really, since FM used to be a very good SRPG series and now its a generic third person shooter. Hell, play Transformers: War for Cybertron if you want robot action.

It's a multiplayer first person shooter thing.  I haven't played Prejudice, but the original was kind of half Halo, half Tribes, if I remember right.

I played the original and thought it was pretty crap, but people seem to be drooling over Prejudice so what the heck, why not.

FYI, Metro 2033 is on sale today for $5.  I had some fun with it when it was released but there were a number of bugs that stopped me from playing.  Hopefully they have those worked out by now.  The graphics and were very good and the story was entertaining.  For $5 its worth checking out.

Grabbed that action indie game for $3.33 and it wouldn't fucking run. Crashed upon running..what the hell? Last time I'm buying 3D indie shit.
Cheered myself up with purchasing Counterstrike full pack. It's been a while since I played it.

That's going to deprive you of so many good games. Especially since indie games aren't any more or less buggy than those from big publishers.

Wow. Comparing it to Civ 3 makes your question a l0t more difficult. Personally, I'd tend towards the "no" side of the question though. I found Civ 5 to be very disappointing and without the addictive replayability of its predecessors.

Picked up Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.  $10 for a Criterion (Burnout) developed racing game that got good reviews and came out less than a year ago seemed like a no-brainer.  Probably won't get around to playing it until I'm done with Dead Island though.

Thanks.  That's kind of what I figured, but I wanted a second opinion.  Looks like I'll spend the $12.50 on something else.

I dunno, I've gotten probably 40 hours out of Civ V, and I'm not a huge fan (Steam ate some of my logged hours a couple weeks ago). I know over time I'll dip in for occasional game, so over time I'll get more than my money's worth...at day 1 pricing. For 12.50, I'd buy it again. I was even eyeing the 2-pack DLC I don't have (ancient wonders and korea), some of the DLC is fun (polynesia, vikings and iroqouis, yay).

I'd say I like it better than pre-BtS Civ IV, without mentioning That Mod.  Make sure you've got a pc that will run it, my C2D 3Ghz e6600/4GB ddr2 800/gtx 460 struggles badly by 1950 or so...visible redraw of the map when scrolling across it...

Republic Commando is a pretty good FPS and Empire at War is a fun RTS game, esp. the space battles.  Battlefront 2 was a favourite of mine for awhile but its primarily a multiplayer game and I don't know ow many people still play it.  The rest are either too old (Dark Forces) or not good enough (Republic Heroes) to interest me.

Different strokes. I hate platforming games in general (never played Mirrors Edge) because dying to jumping is very frustrating to me. However, the movement in the Assassin's Creed series has always felt fluid and "cool" without too many 'FUCK CATCH THE LEDGE NO GODDAMMIT RELOAD" moments.

Mirror's Edge is very much a platformer, meaning that mastering the controls and the timing and all that to navigate an obstacle-laden environment full of tricky jumping puzzles is the game.  You can't compare it to something like, say, Prototype, where the parkour is essentially a visual effect added to an entirely different game (you could just as easily have all of the "obstacles" noclip and the game would play exactly the same way).

It's worth $2, even if you hate it.  It was one of my favorite games I played in the last year, and I personally think it's still better than Deus Ex, having played through both.  I did however play the console version of both, not the pc versions, so I don't know how the ports stand.  For me, it being $2 and less than the price they have for space siege is kinda silly, or maybe it's silly that they think space siege is worth $7 on sale.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Ingmar on September 22, 2011, 03:47:45 PM
It's the Obsidian version of Deus Ex in many ways (not sci-fi, obviously). So, expect better writing but more derpy gameplay. There are some pretty frustrating moments with the interface on the PC version.

To be fair, you might want a controller vs keyboard/mouse from what I remember reading way back.  Most of the bugs, the ones that weren't actual game design issues at least, were fixed a long while back.

At $2, it's nearly free just to see what they did there that was so different from most other shooters, even with some of the weird design issues.  I honestly have to recommend this to anyone that liked Deus Ex, despite my crazed taste in games.  It's one of the very few games since I was a teenager in the 90s that I seriously considered a second play through immediately after the first.  Your choices have actual consequences on the story, unlike deus ex.

Mouse + kb is fine, but you have to really tweak some files heavily to get it playable.  Game is probably fine with thumbsticks, but it can lean a little action heavy in parts.  It also has very retarded boss fights.  The stealth aspects kinda work.

Game showed some real flashes of brilliance here and there despite being pretty far off their initial vision for it.  I've heard it was supposed to be more James Bond but veered closer to Jack Bauer.   Still, the game reacting heavily to how you play it and the decisions you make works rather well here.

Still, it's only about 15 hours long, not overly hard and has some truly memorable moments.  Some very good voice acting (HELLO AGAIN NOLAN NORTH) and great if not a bit cartoony characters.   It was very much worth a play.  Glad I did, and I think I may have paid a whole 7.50 for it.  Hell, I would have been satisfied if I had paid $20 for it.  Full price? I would have put my fist through a wall.

Get Rome Gold and Medieval 2 Gold.

I think you'll love those and be out like $10

EDIT: Start with Rome and play the imperial campaign as the Julii first to get the full experience, IMO. Then, you can decide to play one of the other factions.

With Medieval 2, I recommend starting as England first since they have the best starting location. Don't start as one of the Italian nations. They get fucked early if you don't know how the flow goes.

I'll put things this way,

If you love top down TBS with the battles resolved for you, Alpha Centauri wins.
If you like economics and hate war, Anno wins.
If you like a top down TBS with the ability to drill down into the individual battles, Total War wins.

By no means should you not play one of them because you love the other more. They are all must-own games imo.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals

After intially getting shut out of medieval 2 because of a resolution problem with my 720p display, I just wasn't able to get into it once I got the 1080p display. Seemed like a decent enough game,  but the RTS format really bugged me.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Ingmar on September 27, 2011, 11:20:12 AM
One of my bigger issues with the games is that the victory conditions are so ahistorical. Medieval 2 wanted me to take over more of Europe than Napoleon, with centuries-older tech. Kind of senseless. They also take 600 years past the point where it is obvious you're going to own everyone before it actually ends, which is irritating.

I keep regretting paying full price every time I get one personally, but obviously that doesn't apply here!

If you like MMO's it's definitely worth it.  The soul system is entertaining and the warfronts are a lot of fun from level 10-49.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals

Rift is definitely worth a month if you find MMO's entertaining.  That's what I got out of it.  I'm burned out on the traditinoal MMO right now or I'd still be playing it.

Picked up Sanctum Pack yesterday.  Played last night.  Really liking it.  The reviews are spot on for both good and bad.  For me, I've not played anything like this before so I'm not knocking points off for "not adding anything new," or "not as good as x, y, or z."

Awhile back I installed the F2P Champions Online.  Seems ok for what it is, a copy of CoH but with some updated features.  The crafting seems good and somewhat interesting/useful.  Graphics are pretty dated.  The animations are pretty clunky.  My kids and I are having fun with it though (for free!) to create different heros and sit back and say "He/she looks cool!" or "That didn't work...."  Really, this just made me kind of Jones CoH, so I might check out their F2P soon.  Either way, I absolutely won't be group questing or raiding, so I'll be uninstalling in the near future.

I would've bought it long ago, except it's published by focus home interactive, and thus has activations. vOv

I know DS3 is infected with consolitis, but overall opinions - worth it?

I played the demo it's got other problems than consolitis.   I'm picking it up but that's only because I found the story mildly intriguing.   Which was kind of surprising for dungeon siege but oh well.    I grabbed Blood Bowl too finally.

I only got about 3 hours out of it before I got bored and never came back. Of course, YMMV.
I play Aaction RPGS primarily for the interesting skills, stats, and lewt. DS3 was generic to the max on this front.

Hmm... I played Blood Bowl a while back but just didn't get into the tactical stuff, as much as I like the idea of the game I've just never really had the patience to learn strategies and get into that sort of gameplay (and chronically short attention span, same reason I've never gotten into chess). On the other hand it's a great game and £6 so I'll probably buy it and play half a dozen times.

Through the magic of email, I got them to refund both the activations I'd used on my wife's PC which died and my own PC which also died.

Crysis is a ton of fun if you modify the ini and give yourself increased (or infinite) energy and bonus move speed while move enhanced. Then you play the game like the predator. It's fantastic.

This I did not know. Thanks.

Got this back in the Easter Sale for less than the price of a pint and it's well worth it for that. Had several hours fun with it but the only thing I really, really missed was some sort of ability to upgrade your suit like DX augmentations.

Fable 3: “You cannot join this game because you do not have the same downloadable content as the host” Is bullshit. I downloaded all the free DLC from the Games for windows live. However, my girlfriends does not download ( Account says she has it, game does not list the items nor are they in game ), and the games for windows live ( Stand along client ) will not sign in due to an exception.

The worst part, why would you NOT left others join your game who has DLC you don't ( Not talking about quest packs here )?  Do they not want "Hay, where did you get that?" Questions?

It probably wouldn't update you to the latest Framework unless that's the one it uses.  Programs need to be written for a specific Framework or specific later version from my understanding.  (Sort of a less extreme version of "Why do I have 18 installs of VC++?")

As far as I know, Saint's Row 2 is playable, but you have to jigger with it a bit.  I was having an issue with the game running too fast, and had to download a fan-made mod to slow the game down so that it would run right, but after that, it worked fairly well (did crash occasionally, if I recall).  I wouldn't recommend getting it if you don't have a controller, though, steering a car with A and D is not going to cut it for a lot of the game, I think.

I'd say Duke is worth $10.00.  For full price, I agree, probably not worth it, but $10 seems like a good value for a short, simple shooter.  It's not HORRIBLE, just generic and massively overhyped.  That said, releasing multplayer DLC for it seems like a bad move.

Duke is 25$ USD in Australia so even easier to pass up. I quite enjoyed Saints Row 2 on the PC, graphics were very ordinary and I got bored eventually but it ran okay for me. Jagged Alliance 2 on special but already own it, and really would like to play it again.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals

For that price go for it. Make sure you start the game using the expansion Immortal Throne instead of the original game. That way you get all of the original content plus the expansion content plus the added gameplay mechanisms the expansion adds. If you start the game with just the original Titan Quest you miss out on stuff like shared storage.

Use one of the editors to up the drop rate to a reasonable rate and it will be able to tickle your lootfancy without being reduced to farming the endmonster.

Or enjoy it for one playthrough and be done with it. Also not wasted money for that price.

Tempted by the Red Faction: Armageddon sale but probably not gonna bite. Red Faction: Guerrilla was so fun due to the great open world mechanics and the greatest most iconic weapon since the crowbar, the sledgehammer! So fun running around busting up stuff, taking out enemies behind walls by busting right through them, rah. The remotely detonated charges were also super awesome. Guns suck. The Armageddon marketing makes it seem like a generic rail shooter game with some destruction mechanics, bleh, where the efff is the sledgehammer?!?

I also liked Titan Quest a good deal, but I have to point out the game is pretty damn long.  I was not really up for a second character to slog through the whole thing.  It was perfectly fun for the 40-hour or so first playthrough, though.

If it had any random terrain I would probably still be playing it.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Ingmar on October 12, 2011, 03:55:06 PM
Yeah, it was pretty good, but the lack of random maps and just not QUITE enough mobs on the screen at once thing were the 2 big flaws. The loot was somehow just not quite as fun as Diablo 2's, too.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Fabricated on October 12, 2011, 06:40:40 PM
Titan Quest was slightly better about tuning drops to where you could complete a fucking set of armor than Torchlight was, but the lack of randomly generated areas just made it a bore to play through again.

Really? Bleh. I didn't like Torchlight's skill trees whatsoever, and that's my favorite thing about Diablo clones. I also didn't care for the art style one bit; it looked too cartoony, particularly because all of the characters looked like children.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Hawkbit on October 13, 2011, 10:24:32 PM
TQ's trees are my favorite part of the game.  I think they're pretty broad, and it is entirely possible to build an uber character and also possible to build a dud.

TQ's biggest issue is lack of 'fun' loot, and no random maps.

I also didn't care for Torchlight very much because the trees were so... unorganized.  I can do cartoony, but the game just felt a mess.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Azazel on October 14, 2011, 04:28:33 AM
I had a great time with TQ, but my friends and I played it as a 4-player LAN game over several months worth of Friday nights. YMMV of course as a single player game. It also saves the games in a fucked-up manner in My Documents, so when our computers both died, we pretty much lost all of our characters and loot. I doubt this is a title THQ added Steam Cloud to. Not sure how it would play as a SP game, I'm sure it'd be decent enough but obviously the MP-with-friends adds a lot more and changes the experience dramatically.

I picked up RF: Armageddon yesterday. How much were RF 1 and 2? Despite having played them in the past, and being unlikely to play through them again, it might have been worthwhile to play them as a deboxing exercise...

The thing about gamepads is that you either spend $20.00 for one that's unsupported in half the games out there, or you spend $70.00 for the XBox pad, which seems kind of steep considering the games I'll be using it for.

I got my xbox controller for $15 bucks used at a Gamestop.  Granted it's wired, but for my PC, I don't need wireless.

Well, I technically have a controller. A first gen Logitech Wireless Controller.  :why_so_serious: Still works, I just hate it. Use it to play Super Meat Boy alot tho. About the only game I will use it for, because, fuck trying to play Super Meat Boy with a keyboard.

I haven't gotten around to getting an Xbox one which I would tolerate for daily use, simply because they are stupid expensive here. 80€ or so for just the controller, good luck find it online without shipping that will put it up in the pricerange anyhow.

My upcming trip to the US in 2 weeks, I plan to abuse the "strong" euro and the cheap USD to grab me one at a bargain basement price. Likely this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103206)
That is, unless Newegg has gone down the shitter in the last 4 years. They ship super fast?

This would also be where schild jumps in and tells me how to use that NewEgg link at the upper right to get him money.

I have the second (?) gen Logitech wireless one, it was actually a good controller and X-Men Legends 2 supported it (the buttons on screen were right!). I just got tired of all the 360 controller support and buttons, so I caved and I'm quite glad I did.

Be sure to get the controller "for Windows", it comes bundled with the USB dongle you'll need. You can buy the dongle separately for like $15 if you mess up :)

Yeah, if you're going wireless you need the "for Windows" one.  If you're okay with wired, either a normal 360 or "for Windows" one will work fine, the latter just comes with a driver disc that you almost certainly won't need.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103205 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103205)

What you don't want is a "Play and Charge" one, that has a USB cable, but it's only for charging.  Otherwise, it's still a wireless controller so you'd need to buy the dongle that Sky mentioned anyway.

The PC version is a million times better. No joke, they highly optimized the code. There is even extra content and features in the PC version over the Xbox version.
It's really one of those games that shows how badly others are doing PC ports. Game will run smooth and look amazing even on lower end machines.
Now I'm kind of tempted. I never beat it on the 360 because it ran so poorly, but I liked it well enough until I got fed up.

Edit: Nevermind, it's not on sale anymore. Bleh.

Hearing everyone's replies, I might actually pick up TQ. I liked D2 a good deal but didn't care for Torchlight.

Hm, I'm not sure what this does to your thoughts, but I would say D2 and Torchlight are a fair bit more like each other than TQ is like either.

Checked out Torchlight last night due to this discussion.  Been wanting something like this to play from time to time and I'm not waiting for D3.  Demo was great considering it was "The Game."  Cool thing was I got to the end of it.  It said buy me to play more.  I did and I instatly got back in and played past the demo stage, same character, no loss.  Nice setup.

This is definitely more of a D2 clone than TQ was.  I mean the music and sounds are almost identical.  Feels like D2 but with some cool new things attached.  Oh, and cartoony, which is fine with me.  I have yet to find where the skill trees suck, but I figured it was worth $15 to find out for myself and have fun in the process.  Watch this become a daily special within a week.

I know it's probably too late to be of help but I played Lego Batman with my son on the 360, nice fun game (very funny cut scenes) although it suffers from the early 'single screen' issue all the early lego titles do when played co-op.

Lots of replay value to get all the unlocks but unfortunately my 5 year old hasnt got the patients to re-do all the levels he's already finished _just_ to get all the mini kits etc etc.

I'd love to snag it for IV, but the GFWL/Rockstar Club bullshit just kills it for me.  I had to login to my login so I could login to my game.   :uhrr:

Is it really that bad? I was annoyed having to go through the process of setting up a GFWL ID the first time after getting Fable 3 but at this point it just logs itself on automatically when I start the game and I don't even notice it.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: Hawkbit on October 21, 2011, 11:20:38 AM
Probably not.  I hate GFWL so much that I am likely exaggerating.  I really didn't like having to log into RS Social club along with it, though.  That made me pissy and I never was able to get into the game because it seemed like it took three full minutes to actually get past loading screens and logins.

I believe they pulled the Social Club requirement, you can just skip it when you start the game. Yes, it's an extra click. I think GTA4 was definitely worth it, but I liked it a lot more than most here.

Yeah, our family likes playing these Lego games on our PS3.  That leaves a great question though.  Can we play coop on the PC versions and avoid the single screen issue all together?  That would be sweet.

Title: Re: Steam Daily Deals
Post by: NowhereMan on October 26, 2011, 03:05:40 AM
I've got to say I really don't like GFWL, I think it's a retarded system to set up and is a complete pain in the ass for anyone with an unreliable net connection and adds a totally unnecessary extra layer of shit to go wrong that can make it impossible to play a game you've bought and paid for. I can understand making use of it for stock retail boxes but if a game is Steamworks then publishers that use GFWL as well should jump off a cliff into a car fire.

That said, once you've got it all set up, as long as your net connection is trundling along fine then it isn't a hassle. It hasn't stopped me logging into any games for a good long while but it was really annoying when it went wrong once and denied me access to any save games.

I'm the same somewhat.  I still play it off and on and try to get my other characters up in level, but for the most part the other characters don't add enough to keep me going.  I think I screwed up and played the sniper guy first.  No matter what I do, he seems more fun to me than anything else.

My biggest complaint of the game is how barren it is.  Sure that's part of the lore, but I guess it just gets old after awhile (much like it would be irl.)

That's about what it was for me.  But I got around 30+ hours in it, so it was worth the purchase.  FOV problems and Gamespy lameness soured the experience a little.

Wasn't there an FOV fix? Pretty sure it made it playable for me. I got about 40 hours out of it, so it was fun enough for a while. Went back and tried to play it in stereo vision with my 8800GTX and it choked a bitch, never went back after that.

At launch the fix was pretty hacky and your FOV would reset anytime you used sprint.  So you had to bind it to a key.  You ended up with your FOV switching back and forth constantly.  That was really annoying.   Did they ever patch FOV into the settings?

Likewise.  It still doesn't work with my drivers, the entire world is untextured pale blue.  This is an improvement from the last patch, though.  I might someday throw together a video of all the video glitches I've had with this game, it's fucking rediculous.

I liked borderlands, it had a sense of style and lots of things to shoot at.... even if they were largely identical things. It's more like a FPS version of diablo where half the fun is seeing what they'll drop. That said it was a poor console port in the first place and aging.
