He's a married man!
Not since 1997, and it will never happen again, I can guarantee you that. I'll follow Groucho Marx' advice, the next time I feel like getting married I'll just find a woman I hate and buy her a house. Really? You look married. Oh... then I guess it's okay for them to bring on the dancing girls!

That can't be a good thing...

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation. -William Gibson

I think it's a nice thing for most people, no? If you marry the right person you can become fat and content like a Persian cat. Maybe not as fluffy.

Right. More likely than not you'll have a couple of kids, your wife will become "bored" or "need to find herself" and decide to iniitiate divorce. Bingo, bango, your kids are gone, you've divvied up half your shit, and you're paying around 30-40% of your income to the ex for approximately 10 years. And note that well over 50% of marriages end like this, and in the US around 75% of the divorces are initiated by women. I've seen this shit happen to way too many guys, many of them my friends. These poor bastards weren't bad fathers, they weren't abusive, and yet, they're fucking ruined. Absolutely ruined. Personally, I got off lucky in my divorce. We didn't have kids, and I didn't have much to take. Never again, especially since if you don't really want kids you can get all the benefits of marriage with none of the bullshit by just cohabiting.

Go with God, sister. I wish you all the best. Personally I prefer to look at the odds, and for lack of a better word, they're shit. Men have got the deck stacked against us from the get go, and we'd better wake up to that fact. By all means have fun, screw around, but don't get married. You're setting yourself up for failure from the beginning.

Prenuptial Agreements - Man's Great Equalizer. But seriously, I don't quite understand alimony nowadays, since pretty much all women actually work for a living. I could understand it years ago, when being an actual "housewife" was more widespread, but now? It makes no sense.

Women still average less than a man in an equal position.
That's not to say alimony laws don't need adjustment. Fortunately I have no experience here. Family law seems a convoluted mess from the little I've seen of co-workers and friends going through various things.

In fact, alimony hardly even exists any more. Most payments coming out of divorce are child support. EDIT: After thinking about this, I'm probably overstating it. But it does account for the woman's wages. They put both wages into a formula to come up with who owe who what. Since statistically women make lower than men, it stands to reason they are likely to get the bulk of spousal support payments.

Apologies to the cool lawyery-types here, but a lot of it is lawyers. When my mother got her last divorce, from a real class 1 a-hole, she just wanted out. She did a lot of stupid stuff like taking on a lot of the loans because the bank wouldn't let them refinance under his name, so he got the boat...but she had to pay for it. Anyway, the royal bitch lawyer she had kept nagging her to take him for all he was worth, to sue him into the poorhouse. So much so that my mother finally had to fire her and go with another lawyer.
My girlfriend makes more than I do :)

I anticipate that state educators in AZ will be blindsided by a precipitious decline in the mean IQ of folks in their state during this time :P

Considering AZ spends most of the time as or close to the fiftieth spot education-wise, I'm thinking maybe not.

I've still seen way too many cases personally of women forcing an ex to continue to pay child support, even though the woman has been living with her new boyfriend for multiple years. Loopholes FtW.

Do you mean alimony? Because I can't see why a man or woman should not have to support their own children. Why should the new boyfriend/husband be held responsible?

Loophole? If it's his child he should be paying to support it until adulthood. It is half his responsibility, the wife getting a new boyfriend or remarrying has absolutely no bearing on it whatsoever.

Except that it's been verified by university studies that around 20% of children are NOT actually the father's biological children, unbeknownst to him. Does that matter? No, the father pays regardless "for the good of the children", ignoring the fact that he's been duped by a conscienceless skag. This is the only case I know of where the victim is forced by law to continue to support the perpetrator. If the kids are in fact actually his he lives at the whim of whether or not the mother wants him to see his kids. In most cases he'll become a 14% dad, seeing his kids once, maybe twice a week. In the bad cases his children will be used as a bargaining chip against him. And yep, alimony is virtually non-existent nowadays, but that's because child support has taken it's place. Is that money legally obligated to be used for the children? Nope, it's paid to the mother and can be used at her discretion. The courts can be extremely arbitrary in determining the amount, and you will be held to it. Get laid off? Fuck you, pay me. Take a lower paying job? Fuck you, pay me. In a lot of ways it's like the mob were running our family law.

What about cases where a married woman cheats on her husband, gets knocked up, lets the husband think it's his, then 2 weeks after the birth, in a fight yells, "by the way, it's not yours!" and oops, it turns out that it is his because the last year of their marriage was spent in hate-sex? Not that this example is close to home or anything.

Except that it's been verified by university studies that around 20% of children are NOT actually the father's biological children, unbeknownst to him. Uh, no. There was one goofy survey in Scotland or some place with horrible methodology that was then hyped up by the "poor me" male brigade. There have been no actual "university studies" on such a thing that I am aware of. Such a study would in fact have a very, very difficult time getting by an IRB. If you can cite such studies to me, I will look at them and evaluate them, but this is an urban myth as far as I'm concerned. The courts can be extremely arbitrary in determining the amount, and you will be held to it. Around here there is a formula in the statute that is rather rigorously followed.

Back on-topic, I have tickets and will be in Phoenix from Saturday until Monday for f13.con. Out of curiousity, do any of you guys in the Phoenix area have an old dot matrix printer stashed away in one of your closets? It'd make things go a lot easier for me with regard to stenciling. I hate tracing this shit out with a passion. No ink cartridge would be needed, I just need it to hit the front page of the stencil hard enough to transfer over.

People who don't keep mostly useless shit? ...I might have a dot matrix in the attic at my parents house. In Virginia. Edit: Actually, this weekend I can take a trip to the local college surplus store and see if they have one for pennies.

Don't go too crazy out of your way, man. I can still trace out the stencils, I was just looking for the lazy way out. If any of you have an old discarded one laying around, by all means bring it over to Schild's, but don't buy one.
