Yea, I'll pass. Closest I'm going to a desert this year will be a June golf trip in to the Okanagan. I can't even fucking imagine being in AZ in July. Let me know the next time you try for a get together a little further north.
We need to do a WA/OR/BC gettogether one of these days. There are 4 or 5 regulars from the Seattle area, some BC folks, and VDL and Sauced from Portland. Would be fun!

Count me in the "Fuck a July in the AZ desert" camp. I was out there a few years ago in August and it was torture.

I second that emotion. Summer in Cascadia is a lovely thing.

I would consider trying to get to WA/BC although really I think all parties should meet in the middle and call it a day. The Bay Area being the middle point between AZ and BC according to my internal geography.

The ideal spot is Vegas. Then Ab can come from Utah, and there are plenty of rooms and all the booze we would ever need! Tentatively planning a trip in September.

Guys. Crucial thing about AZ. It's cheap. Vegas, SF, etc, are not cheap. Please note: About half the people in this thread say even coming to AZ is too expensive.

Are you in VT? I consider all of wild new england and the adirondacks the best part of the entire world. Pacific NW is second best, because the old lady doesn't like winter (heresy!).

Plattsburgh on the edge of the Adirondack Park, though the family has a place inside the Park. A little over an hour from the High Peaks region, Placid, Saranac Lake, or where ever. I don't make it into the South or West of the Park that much, though, and my hiking has been greatly curtailed due to the recent lack of an appropriate hiking partner.

Just for the record. My friends and I have taken to making up shots named after Kung Fu moves and movies. Like Crane snatches Lizard and Puma Strikes Rabbit.
It's... interesting. And might kill us.

I second this. I can make up some bullshit conference that I need to go to to justify the trip to the wife. :-D Oh, and just because Vegas has been mentioned I need to post my bad beat story from Friday. I was playing in a 10-20, full kill (which takes it to 20-40) game that only gets up about 3 times a year when they do a big tourney. Had an up and down night, but am just about even and really ready to leave when I get rockets. I am just to the left of a total donk that has put a grand into the game, gone to the felt and is now on a rush having won about 5 of 6 last hands. Earlier before his rush he paid 3 bets on the flop with 65o with a board of A23 that I thought was a great flop with my pocket rockets. He of course spiked the 4 on the turn. Yay me. Anyways, He has the kill buton so has posted 20 bucks. I raise it to 40, a guy 4 to my left 3-bets it, cold-call from donk's brother, he cold calls, I made it 80, guy makes it 100, call, call, I cap it, call (all-in) call call. So, there is 495 dollars in the pot before the flop. Flop comes down K62 which is a really good flop for me. Check, I bet, call call. Turn is an 8. Check, bet, fold (which makes me think a signal was passed), raise. I know I'm dead but there is now 700 bucks in there, so I call it down to see 86s when a blank hits the river. The all-in guy had slick. I got up and left while the dude pulled his 795 dollar pot against my cracked aces.

Going to AZ is tons more expensive for us East coasters. Sure, I can tough out the drive to VT, which takes the better part of 8 hours. But AZ?
lolz. That requires a flight, which costs hundreds of bucks. All beside the point, I know.

Both ways. Arizona is a hub for Southwest. And during the summer it's cheap. Very cheap.

Cheap to go to the desert in summer? Wow, whodathunkit? I wonder how much it costs to fly to Alaska in January.

AZ in the summer is supremely pleasant for nocturnal types. The summer is my favorite season here, wish I had southern hemisphere location to winter in.

AZ in summer is getting an undeserved bad rep here imo. Last time I was there was in the middle of August. It's cheap, friendly, good beer and hot women. WTF do you want? Is it hot? Meh some might think so, but it's dry. Compared to SE Asia or anywhere with humidity it's damn comfortable. And anyway only mad-dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun.
Stock up on lager and whisky boys! Flight confirmed - I am there :P

Having been places all over that are humid in the summer (or humid all of the time) give me the desert any day (probably doesn't hurt that I grew up in the desert either). At least you can run a fan\mist combo whereas all that does in places like Houston is make you more miserable and attract mosquitos.

I've said already I would totally consider it, and in fact there is a part of my brain that still is, but for the fact that I dont drive (urban kid, sue me) and its my fucking birthday. Then I think of how ASU women are always in playboy/maxim et all and I reconsider again...
Depart Jul 12 Thu N/S OAK-PHX 1989 Depart Oakland (OAK) at 8:20 PM Arrive in Phoenix (PHX) at 10:10 PM Return Jul 17 Tue 1 PHX-OAK 588 Depart Phoenix (PHX) at 1:10 PM Arrive in Oakland (OAK) at 4:00 PM Total $202.20
You would wish being on the same coast would save me more then $100 bucks.

Oh, and for the record: I'm in Chandler, Squirrel will be staying in Scottsdale. If you need places to stay close to us, as passing out on my floor every night isn't really attractive, I can give you a list, just tell me if you want to stay in Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, or Mesa (all east valley).
Looking at places to stay now. Turns out there are a lot of nice spas in that area so the plan is for both me and my wife to stay at one of those, so she can do the spa thing and I can do whatever it is you plan to do. Two birds with one stone. Anyway, I'd like something close to wherever the whatever is, so either some vague locale or a street address to feed into the Google map would help me out.

I'm staying at the Valley Ho - a somewhat retro hotel. If you have $$$ see if you can swing the Phoenician . I stayed there once and it was fucking awesome. For spa/pool/service anyway.
