With Gerard Butler as Snake? fuck that. Kurt Russell is and always will be Snake. And what's up with all these Carpenter remakes? Seriously. I mean Rob Fucking Zombie remaking Halloween and wanting to give Michael a backstory about being an abused kid? WTF? If anyone touches The Thing I swear to god I'm going to go on a shooting spree in Hollywood.

I concur. At least as far as Escape from New York goes. Some movies don't need to be remade.

If you want to take a classic story and redo it with a new spin - fine, go for it. I have no real issue with remakes of things like King Kong for example. The new movie didn't do much for me, but it's a big enough story to stand up to having multiple versions.

What you don't do though is start doing remakes that fuck with an actor's iconic characters. Especially when the actor in question is still around and could still make sequals for that character. (Yes, I know Escape from LA was horrendous, but I liked it anyways)

I know, lets do a remake of Dirty Harry. Maybe starting DiCapiro? Hell, the people will love it!

The Thing might be the best monster movie ever made.  If the special effects were better, there would be no question.

Um, you guys know that The Thing was a remake itself, right?

Assault on Precinct 13 remake was a pretty decent action flick.  Never got a chance to see the original,  basically because it was hard to find.  It has been remade a couple of times, though.  The French movie The Nest is pretty decent as well.

Some stories are big enough to be remade/reworked a few times, especially if you play with the setting.  Yojimbo becomes A Fistfull of Dollars,  both excellent.  Last Man Standing was subpar,  but not awful.

Escape from New York is dated now.  The way that Carpenter protrayed an antihero was great and original,  but it got adopted by dozens of shitty movies that now detract from the original.  An updating with the same spirit as the original could be interesting.

What the are you talking about ?

The 'new' Assault on Precinct 13 was a fucking poor film that shat all over the previous one.

Personally I'm waiting for a redo of Evil Dead starring Tom Cruise. There's another story that just screams multiple versions.

Yeah but it was a vastly different and superior movie to the original.

There is talk of doing a third Escape From movie with Russell and Carpenter called Escape from the World or something like that.

One need not remake Escape from New York. Carpenter has shown no real affinity for making non-schlocky movies in the last few years. Fuck, might as well remake They Live.

The Thing may be a remake, but how many people can name a single actor from the orignal without looking it up? Snake Pliskin is a character that is directly associated with Kurt Russel, and shouldn't be redone until he reaches an age that he couldn't do it himself.

Escape from NY was already remade as Escape from LA.

It is. And the two films are so different that they share only setting and title.

It's already been remade.  Evil Dead II is Evil Dead.  Anyway, you may get your wish: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434020/

Well yeah, but Evil Dead II is a weird case. Same actor and director, same script basically, bigger budget. As for that remake, Sam Raimi is involved and the FAQ says there will be no Ash character because Bruce Campbell owns that character. Which is good and bad. I have little interest in the Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell. But it would piss me off in the extreme if someone else played Ash.

I agree, and it's the same argument we are making for Snake Pliskin - its a character that fans associate specifically with Russel.

I'll admit that there are times when a character is redone quite well by another actor, but if you want to take James Bond for example, they went through four (five if you count David Niven) different actors trying to live up to Connery before they got one that I think can due the character justice.

I am in total agreement. Hell I didn't think there should be another Superman movie because for me Christopher Reeves was Superman.

Marshall Dillon from Gunsmoke was The Thing orginally, what do I win?

That said, The Thing made me fill TWO poopsocks, wow what a movie!

And excuse me but Snake Plisken is NOT Russell's iconic role.  It's Jack Burton baby!

The newer version of The Thing is much more faithful to the original short story, and is just plain a better movie.  Here's a little article on the subject.

Someone could play Ash. The guy that did it in Evil Dead the Musical. He was fucking brilliant. Even Bruce said so. (I was there =) )

Of course, the musical took a camp classic and camped it up even further, but the guy that did it delivered the goods.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail
