I just ran across this on Yahoo.  It's basically a new merit badge introduced to the Boy Scouts of America to attempt to decrease music and movie piracy among youngsters.  I'm not sure what to think about it at the moment, so I thought I'd open the floor to discussion. |

Piracy issues aside, it just sounds like a bunch of entertainment industry reps using their kids to push their agenda.
I doubt the Boy Scouts of Waco or Kalamazoo will give a shit.

It's a merit "patch" and not a badge because it's an unofficial whatever put togather by the Los Angeles branch. The Hong Kong branch has a similar "patch" and program. They pay kids to submit links to pirated crap or some such.

What next, a coke drinking merit "patch" shaped like a Coke logo? Learn why coke is better than water, where to buy it, and ways you can help other people to start drinking coke too!

I downloaded a copy of that image from the link you provided Nebu. Then I printed it out and made my own merit badge.
 It was awesome.

I'd like to view this curriculum.  Maybe as a visual aid they spliced in bits of the South Park showing how Britney Spears couldn't afford the jumbo jet and had to settle for the regular jet, because of music piracy. |

Activity patch,  which doesn't count for anything.  Advancement is strictly through merit badges.  The Boy Scouts do patches for virtually everything,  which amount to nothing more than "teh shiny" to collect or put on your uniform.  Camporees, summer camp, etc.  Sales of patches are big for fundraising,  and some kids/adults trade them. A Coke patch or anything else that's blatantly merchandising would never get off the ground.  I'm not sure the Boy Scouts will even take gifts of product from soft drink manufacturers anymore, due to health concerns and negative PR. Cynical douchebags.    (For the record,  I served on the board of a Boy Scout council pre-merger,  and now am a "member-at-large"/finance and fundraising guy for a very large Council in New York) |

anything else that's blatantly merchandising would never get off the ground. "Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable,..." Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in a statement Friday.
Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and learn how to identify five types of copyrighted works

The program is being introduced to the 52,000 Scouts in the Los Angeles area, with plans to offer it to other California councils early next year. The program will reach Scouts ages 6 to 21.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Link:  http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Merchandising By definition,  merchandising would need to push a particular brand or studio,  or specific movie/television franchises.   How would education on copyrights do that?   If it was a Sony patch,  or a Power Rangers patch, or whatever I could see potential problems.  You have to identify how this is a direct means of inducing scouts to consume a specific product. If anything, this is a goodwill grab by the MPAA in an attempt to promote their views on piracy. |

Well you know, if Canada weren't so hostile to the US minority groups on the border this wouldn't be an issue.
Canada: the United States' last territorial demand in North America. (Except for Mexico.)
