Apropos of nothing, but MMA would be way cooler without all the boring ground grapping.  Ohhhhh, I see.

It would completely ruin it. Isn't the whole point for the two guys to establish the alpha male through gay sex? And the strongest, gayest male gets a gaudy belt.

The sport evolves constantly.  The better fighters end up spending less and less time on the ground these days.  Ironically, it is now shifting back to more boxing and kickboxing again, but the balance is pretty good.  The last UFC card (136) was anything but boring.  Lightweight champ Frankie Edgar pulled a Rocky Balboa for the second fight in a row.

I only mention it because I've found myself watching a fair bit of UFC/Strikeforce/Showbox lately. Had one cool match where a guy came out of a corner and faked a low kick into spinning backfist, knocking the opponent right out.

The grappling is pretty annoying in normal boxing, too.

Whatever became of heavyweight boxing? The 80's and 90's with Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson and their ilk?

So I bought the Star Wars Blue Ray discs and none of them seem to work in my PS3.  This is odd because I have no trouble with any other Blue Rays, regular DVDs or games.  Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

That's really odd - usually I hear it the other way around in that disks that didn't work in a player will typically work in a PS3.

You wasted a lot of money and supported the Vader NOOOOOO (as it was added to Jedi) therefore you must be shunned.

Or did you mean thoughts that would help you?

That may be the case, but it plays the old school Star Wars stuff.  So it apparently just doesn't like the technology.

I'm assuming it's some sort of DRM fuckery.   Ohhhhh, I see.

Lack of star power, lack of talented heavyweight, boxing promoting being a giant joke and there being roughly a million betls have all contributed to the decline of heavyweight boxing and to a lesser extent boxing in general.

Pay-per-view.

It transformed the sport from a national spectacle into a niche market.

Even when fights were on HBO they still were blockbuster type events, at least the heavyweight bouts and even some of the middleweight ones (like Sugar Ray Leonard v. Roberto Duran, for example).

And MMA has starting eating its lunch.  Not only are they whipping them in the TV market, but they are probably stealing all their talent as well.

Yeah, they took the exact opposite model of the NFL by completely restricting their product from their target audience.  Pay per view is not a great idea if you want to increase your viewership.

I agree with the PPV comments, but I think it's an even bigger issue with the promoters and the boxers themselves.  There are simply next to no interesting fights anymore, and the only one that anyone gives a shit about is probably never going to happen.  Boxing is a freaking snoozefest these days compared to MMA.

Yeah, both PPV and the promoters not putting together good matchups. When I got out of watching boxing regularly, it seemed like all the champs would only fight chumps to pump up their stats and hold the belt...who wants to watch a ripped Tyson beat the shit out of some fat guy?

Since then, I pretty much like the middle-welter weight divisions, where you can get some really stunning fights without two fats guys going to sleep in each other's arms.

Are there even fights on tv anymore? Can't remember the last one I saw that wasn't on HBO. When I lived in CA, it was great watching Tues Night Fights with a young Michael Buffer from just down the road in Inglewood.

I boxed as a teenager, so I have a great deal of respect for the training and ability of boxers.  Olympic boxing with a scoring system is an excellent display of accuracy and agility without becoming brutal human abuse.  On the converse, I'm not a fan of sluggers (inside fighters) and I've never understood the appeal of MMA.  I think some people enjoy bloodsport a bit too much to be healthy.

I recall hearing my dad complaining that there were no interesting fights 30 years ago.

Boxing only has the organization of the sport to blame for it's failures. Similar to the NHL.

I'm so ready for this surgery to be done and over.  I never should have scheduled it so far out (silly me wanting to be considerate of my work duties and avoid month-end conflicts).

I'll just second what ghost said about boxing and what Nebu said about MMA - both explain how I think about those "sports" just fine.

I found nothing in the FDA food labelling guide.  I'm guessing it's a proprietary volume mark of some sort.
