Yeah.  Taylor had no reason for getting lung cancer, that I can tell.  He didn't smoke and was very young to get it.  He leaves behind three children and a wife with a high school education (he, like me, had a dental and medical doctorate).  It doesn't really bother me when old people die, particularly those with useful and somewhat happy lives.  I guess (as I believe Khaldun lamented upon a few weeks ago) that many of us are getting to that age where people we know are going to die.   Ohhhhh, I see. I don't deal as well with things when they aren't in the natural order of when they should happen.

Well, tonight I will have a bourbon to my health, and to all of your health (even Morat  awesome, for real) and shall be a sad panda.

Sorry to hear that Ghost :(

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

I'm sorry, ghost.  My grandfather died from lung cancer (but at ~80) and his mother did as well.  She never smoked, died in her 40s.  I'm surprised my grandfather dodged it as long as he did, as he worked as a dry cleaner and smoked most of his life.

Cancer sucks, and particularly when it strikes someone young.

Rhyssa, best of luck with your surgery and recovery, and forget about your mil - it's just not worth chasing approval.  People can take you or leave you and if they leave you, their loss.  Nobody can fuck us up as much as family can, if we let them.  I'm with Ironwood - your husband's your family now, and his family is his problem not yours.

My mother-in-law only started liking me after she got Alzheimers and forgot why she didn't; she became much more pleasant (and trippy) after she was stricken.  Horrible to say, maybe, but true.

Some people die too young, and some people die too old.

That's actually kind of good, Xanthippe.  Most folks get much more irritable and difficult to manage when they get really into the Alzheimers progression.

Yes, and probably true in her case as well.  I don't live with her, though, so it's gotten better for me.

She's now in the non-verbal,  (I assume vegetative), state.  Existing, rather than living.  The state where Logan's Run starts to look like a good end.

My grandmother had Alzheimers and she was cranky as all fuck in the beginning.  She got better in the latter stages, but it got tougher for the general family to deal with.  The hardest thing about Alzheimer is to remember that they don't remember, and that when they get to end stage that they aren't your relative any more.  They've moved on long before their body did.  Don't make yourself unhappy trying to help them remember or make them happy, because in many instances it just isn't possible.

Off topic but.. the terrible 2s are starting to live up to their advanced billing.  What a day.  I don't think there was a single hour without some sort of screaming, crying, or general annoying fussiness.  I'm beginning to envy parents with docile children.

After recently living with an energetic 2-year-old who turned 3, and seeing two months of that, it's like the terrible 2s with added stubbornness and a wider range of fussiness. His mother made it through 2, but 3 is driving her crazy. Prepare yourself for the long haul, but the wonderful moments still make up for it all.

Sorry, Ghost. My condolences.

And yes, 3 was much worse than 2 on both my kids and all my nephews. That was where the boundary pushing and no/ trantrum phase happened.  Stay strong and remember you're the parent.  If you don't they wind-up controlling you.

I concur with the 3 age range being worse than 2 for most kids, although my little boy is almost three and he's actually pretty decent to deal with most of the time.

We got through most of Year 2 relatively unscathed.  Then about a month before she turned 3, the full throwing on the floor, screaming LEAVE ME ALONE, HANDS OFF ME started.   So yah.  3 is fun.

To backtrack slightly to a page or two ago (yet relate something that just happened): the thought occurs to me that much like going to Wal-Mart, family get-togethers are something best endured once in a while to remind one's self of why you don't do it more often.

This is almost 100% bullshit.  I suggest you listen to your doctor, Rhyssa, not this idiocy.  And you should expect some discomfort and side effects after your surgery because it is a major surgery.

And just so you know, Sand (since I've seen you mention this shit about 10 times), a morphine drip with a patient controlled button is designed so tht you don't kill yourself by overdosing on morphine.  Having a relative push the button for you is really fucking stupid.  And if you're too unconscious to push a button you probably don't need the pain control provided by morphine.

My personal advice?  Ask about Toradol.  It won't make you loopy (which most idiots unfortunately associate with pain control) but it will control pain and inflammation very well.  They may not give it to you if it isn't indicated in your case, but it's good stuff.
Hey mister I don't practice medicine anymore, there is a lock out device on the Med drip so you van only push it once every seven minutes, no more than seven times in an hour. So you can't over dose even if someone else is pushing the button.
Additionally if you don't get anything in your systeem prior to coming fully out from under the general you go from unconscious to the world to no pain killer and screaming your ass off while two orderlies hold you down while they try to direct inject a huge syringe of morphiene into you.

Well, Ironically that's how it turned out for me as well, which sucked the big one.

However, there is something to be said for seeing your wee baby in a tiny wee cute school uniform for the first time and seeing all her nursery friends and making new friends and learning to line up properly and walk into the class.

It also helps that Mrs Livingston the teacher is a slim wee package of dark haired hawtness that's so good to look at they had to throw me out of the playground.

She probably wouldn't mind if you snapped a photo of her.  Also, I wouldn't have guessed that "slim wee package" was a complimentary description.  It would probably have a fully different meaning in, say, West Virginia.

Some of the faculty and moms are nice to chat with. awesome, for real  Overall, school is a positive.  I get to see special things, gain a new set of potential social contacts, and no one has to sit around the house all day enduring children's programming.

I suppose one example not involving a hot mom would be that my son now goes over to the preschool building to read to a tiny kid, just like another one did for him.  It's even more awesome because I remember him saying he was looking forward to being a Reading Buddy when he was in pre-k because he liked his so much.

As hard as 2 and 3 were, 4 is just  Heart imo, and 4 to puberty is so fun.  Teenhood goes by in a snap though, so remembering that makes it more bearable.  (My oldest, my stepson just turned 36, so this is my second foray through with son (15) and daughter).

My kids had the same experience with reading buddies - being one, then becoming.

My baby (now 12) is a teacher's aid for her former first grade teacher's class.  She comes home glowing with how great the kids are.  It helps that they think she's a grownup and practically worship her.  This from a kid who, a few weeks ago, was talking about how annoying little kids are.  Heh, that showed her.

So getting ready to drain my redneck pool and am wondering if 140lbs of salt dissolved into 6000 gallons of water will be bad for my trees and plants if I water them with it, I am mostly worried about oaks, cedars and st. augustine.  Hate to have to drain this into the gutter during a drought but that is a better option than killing all my trees.

6000 gallons = 48000 pounds of water for a salt ratio of only 0.3%.  I am not a chemist but that doesn't sound remotely dangerous to plant life.  I repeat, I am not a chemist.  The math I did may be completely irrelevant.

That's the math I didn't want to do.  About 3000 PPM will kill grass after a while but mostly from salt accumulation I guess.
