Today was the wrong day to be pushing Amazon EC2 to clients.
Yes indeed. I've been dealing with that since 1:00 am Pacific Time (15 hours and counting).

Hope you sorted it out !

Some chap on Slashdot posted : "Amazon should put their cloud in a cloud, so the cloud will have the redundancy of the cloud."

It's hard to argue with that !!

Been without a personal personal computer for several days and am only now reading about the Amazon issue.

Quote
Amazon blamed a "networking event" that "triggered a large amount of re-mirroring" of storage volume, creating a capacity shortage.

I hate it when that happens.  Whatever that is.  I'm interested in how a network outage could cause what I can only imagine are enterprise SAN frames to somehow desync.  I'll suspect a data management problem while I eat my popcorn.  I do like Amazon's products but I can only imagine that my own executives are dancing right now.

Happily, I am able to install Dropbox on my work laptop, and I retrieved my sixteen-random-character password for the forums just a little while ago.

I know a shit-ton more about EMC Timefinder than I did last week.

Heh, I got asked if I wanted to go to some EMC convention. I told them I'd rather stick my dick a blender.

I reckon that decision varies based on dick size.

I would not go to a EMC convention.  I would end up being thrown out or perhaps in jail.

I don't understand Twitter Get off my lawn!

I'm looking at someone's page of tweets and it's a list of entries with observations and links, but it's also filled with responses to other Twits that don't have any context.  Am I supposed to visit AnnonymousHung1 to understand what this response might be about, or is there a thread or previous post section?

I may twit my magnum opus as I think of it.  Else I might be tempted to hire an editor.  I have to remember that Aristotle, Zeto and Marcus Aurelius did not use an editor.

I find Twitter to be spectacularly useless, but then again I like having conversations with people.  Facebook makes a lot of sense to me for that reason.

My theory's always been that's the reason a lot of people prefer Twitter to Facebook.  They can spout whatever the fuck they want at their followers and not have to worry about anyone talking back unless they want to hear it.

Fucking AC crapped out on me sometime. On Easter. It's humid as hell in the house because the AC kept running despite the outside unit totally stopping work.

For hours. I'm not sure when it died. The fan will try to start moving on the outside unit, but it'll just move a bit then die. Warranty on most parts ended about two years ago, and I'll bet that the warranty on the major parts won't cover a dead capacitor or whatever's wrong.

So I've got a call in to an AC place because it's hot and humid enough at 8:15 AM. By tonight it'll be 90+ in here and humid as shit.

So I'm thinking the cost of whatever's wrong, the cost of labor, PLUS the emergency fee (holiday and Sunday service!) is going to be way too much. Assuming they even have the right part.

You're going to get raped.  It'd be cheaper just to go buy a 5000 BTU window unit at Wal*Mart ($98 and available in-store according to their website) or the equivalent and use it just for a day then call the pros tomorrow.   Just the service call alone on a holiday will probably be more than that unit.

I have no doubt. The non-ermergency fee alone is 100 bucks. (They define 'emergency' as an in-house temp of 80 degrees during cooling season, or below 60 during the winter). It's currently 75ish, and will probably be close to 80 when he arrives.

The 'after hours' charge isn't specified. Betcha it's pricey. Bascially they charge standard rates for 'emergencies' and they tack on holiday and after hours for 'non-emergencies' so it'll be fun to see my house temp get measured at 79.5 or some shit.

Even if the part is under warranty -- I can't tell. My warranty is fuzzy but it's either the capacitor (not under warranty) or the fan (motor/compressor which IS) -- I'll count myself lucky to get away with less than 500 bucks. But it's fucking miserable in here, and installing a window unit is...difficult with my windows. I did that back in 2004 when the AC first went out, since I had a two week wait before I could afford a new AC unit.

Fucking double-paned windows, storm windows and non-standard sizes.

Even though it is Sunday and a holiday, you might want to check around the local equipment rental places to see if they have stand alone units. (Or you can buy one if WalMart or Home Depot or some place has one). Those just use a flexible hose similar to a dryer vent hose attached to a small plate that fits in pretty much every double-hung window in existence saving the hassle of muscling an 80lb monster in and out of a window.

I just double checked the prices. If it's under warranty, they just charge a flat service fee -- same now as tomorrow. If it's not (in which case it's the capacitor) I'd pay 15 dollars more for the service call and and extra 30 for the labor. (30 per hour. However, the technician I spoke to said it was either under warranty or something he could fix in 20 minutes. There's not a lot of in-between with those symptoms.).

If that's actually true when I receive my bill, I'll have to keep these guys in mind.

New Fan motor + New capacitor. Not under warranty, fuck it. My AC is 2 years older than I thought. (I dug out my paperwork). 400 bucks, total. parts and labor.

Not bad for Easter Sunday, and repaired within 4 hours of calling it in. Turns out the company owner lives four houses down from me, which is why the repair guy had no problems locating me.

Only downside is they didn't have an exact match for the motor. My old one was two-speed -- went into low-speed mode depending on outside temperature. New one is single speed.

So I'll lose some energy efficiency in the spring and fall. Not much -- I'll just drop from 14.5 SEER to 14 I think.

I don't find that too bad a price, but I don't know how much either of the parts cost.

I keep forgetting it's a 'holiday'. It's my least favorite, just so inconvenient. And since everyone else makes some kind of gastroreligious plans, I've got some time to cram for the exam next weekend.

I want to be out putting in my new apple trees, but the hardware store is closed. Let's hope the varmints don't get to them like they did with the first one. Because next year I get a rifle.

If I don't get a paid day off from work, it isn't a holiday, dammit. Doesn't mean I don't have to go over to the in-laws for dinner. For a non-religious family they sure love them some Easter dinner.  More an excuse to see the grandkids and lavish them with candy and gifts, I suspect. I wouldn't normally mind, but today my back is really bothering me, AND dinner is scheduled to start at the same time as the Canucks playoff game 6  Heartbreak
