I spent a few hours deinfesting my computer of a smitfraud-c bit of malware. Thanks Avast for spotting it, but letting it get all snuggled in anyway.

I like how that if you try an install an Adobe product now it tries to get trick you to install McAfee forceware.  Just one more step blurring the line between them and a virus.

Getting into Amazon Vine would require me to give a rat fuck about the community of Amazon. As far as I'm concerned, the order page should be <PICTURE> <SPECS> <PRICE> <BUY ME> and that's it.

But then, I can say that since I'd wager I get more free shit than any 5 members of Amazon Vine put together.

The US had a ban on haggis?  Is that why I never saw it here?  Can I expect it to start appearing on pub menus?   DRILLING AND MANLINESS

There was a ban on imported haggis because of the concerns over possible scrapie in the sheep parts. I.e. it was a "vicitim" of the Mad Cow problem in the UK in the 80s and 90s.

Yes you can. On the other hand, I could have told you where you could get a proper haggis supper and a pint of Belhaven in Brooklyn even while the ban was in effect. This ruling allows Scottish haggis to be imported. It was previously possible to make sheep haggis in the US, something that was very uncommon (most US manufacturers preferring to use cheaper local beef offal, which tastes completely wrong) but which a couple of US speciality butchers did.

Why do the users on the manga forum I admin think I want to be their friend and that we "got off on the wrong foot" or something?

What does moderating a manga forum entail? Keeping the furries from mingling with the general populace?

Nah, no furries there (at least none that I know of), but the arguments and name calling is pretty crazy actually.  The users can actually get into huge fights about their favorite characters and since we try to keep the place at an overall PG13 level, it can involve a fair amount of moderating work.  Plus some of the idiots think it's cute to get around the word filter in creative ways.  Sorry idiot, if I wanted you to be able to type "fuck" numerous times, I wouldn't have filtered it in the first place.

We're a huge site + forum (first thing that comes up when typing "manga" into Google) so there is a wide range of members there.  I'm probably one of the oldest and the youngest member I can think of offhand said they were 10.  The best parts are when members get upset about the rules we have in place and complain about how they're being repressed.  I comfort myself that they wouldn't last 5 minutes on a gaming forum and definitely would have been gone from here in less time, especially some members.

The latest report I dealt with was one member talking about some minor One Piece character by saying that "I'd rather have Hitler as my butt buddy than her. She's HORRIBLE... Almost killing JEWS (until extinction) was better than the **** she pulled.".  Yeah, over a manga character.   swamp poop

Anime/Manga fans are especially creepy. I really don't miss trying to run herd on them at a convention. Dunno which are worse, yaoi or furry fans.

<edit> I mean the hardcore fans, I like cartoons, I just don't base all my entertainment/life around them.

I like a number of the cartoons and have a pretty large number of toys and such related to manga/anime (though really I just buy well-designed toys wherever they're from - if they were Russian I'd still buy them) - that said, yea, freaks, the lot of them and mostly not in a good way.

We have the hardcore "my OTP is better than your OTP" kinds of fans, the rules lawyers who know exactly how much they can get away with, the absolutely clueless, and the normal "I like reading manga and discussing it" kinds.

Here's the exchange that helped set me off tonight. Both of them took place basically at the same time:

I usually just read the chapters every few weeks or so because trying to keep up with the story of a weekly manga release is a PITA.  We really only have major problems with the NBOP forums as we call them.  I almost never post anything for discussion any more because some of these idiots post like monkeys on crack.

I think most of the forum would be gone if we banned for bad spelling, improper grammar, or lack of punctuation.  Besides, a good portion of the members are ESL, so we can't really judge too hard.

I do ban the outright idiots and those who insist on using chatspeak though.  I refuse to put up with that BS.

Most of the forum needs to be trained sounds more like what I was getting at. Running a forum harsh on spelling and grammar makes me feel like I'm doing something for the internet.

I have gradually discarded all the forums I posted on which fail to be harsh on spelling and grammar.  Since that reduces me to here, SA and Goonfleet it has the positive side-effect of letting me get more work done during the day.

Yaoi fangirls.  They're like psyche-destroying weapons.  I was slightly amused by them the first convention I worked.  After that?  Not so much.

Quarterly commissions came in today.  Do I buy a new 50+" TV or a knife set for the kitchen?

My old LCD TV broke last summer so I've been living with a 23" screen in a biggish living room.
My current set of steak/cooking knives was a cheap set and is getting dull with rust spots.

Hmmmm choices and decisions.

A 50" tv isn't going to help with the tetanus.

Also, do you have a sharpening setup? I'm still using some cheap Pampered Chef knives my mother bought me for xmas a few years ago, they're sharp as hell because I've got a couple stones and last year invested in a wustof sharpening steel. The steel really made the difference, these pieces of crap can't hold an edge to save themselves, but a quick hone every day does the trick.

buy the TV, throw out the knives, go down to a kitchen supply store and buy some inexpensive new ones with plastic handles and use them for 6 months until they get dull.
