The weather has been just disgusting here lately; 85+F, 70%+ Humidity. I think the humidity was above 90 this morning, as I broke out in a slimy sweat just going from my car into work.

Yeah, it's 100 here right now, 90 in the house (at least downstairs) and I think I might fucking die.
FakeEdit: Oh and it's going to be 90 for the rest of the week. WHHHHYYYYYYYYYYY?!
Yesterday and today it's 105 in Portland. At least in Estacada you don't have urban heat island effect preventing nighttime cooldown. I don't think it dipped below 80 all night (usually drops down to the 50s at night in summer). Luckily, our house came with centralized aircon, but it's kind of wimpy - took 3 hours to get from 85 to 75 indoors. And there's no vent in our bedroom. We almost broke down and bought a window unit, but they were all sold out of all but the 10K BTU units that we'd have to get on a ladder and build a frame for. If I didn't have to work I'd just spend the week at the (noticeably cooler) coast. Edit: according to the National Weather Service, yesterday's temp was 106. It broke a record of 101 set in 1998 (I remember that year too). I stayed up all night last night in order to sleep through the heat today (got up like 15 minutes ago), and I don't think it got below 79 last night. In fact, when I went to sleep today around 9:30 am, I think it was already around 83. For some reason Estacada is always hotter than the surrounding areas, we almost never have snow when everyone else does (and if we do, it's a lot less), and Sandy is almost always 5-10 degrees cooler. Maybe it has something to do with the river on one side and the foothills on the other? Shrug.

Seriously. They should just rename Ruby 1.9 to Perl 6 and be done with it.

We broke records this week in Vancouver as well - the average temp in my apartment this week during the afternoon has been 87F, with the AC running. Wednesday afternoon, it hit 95 at the airport - which is usually noticibly cooler than the suburbs. The record breaking stuff has been at night though, as we've had temps in the mid-high 70s at 4:00 AM...

We're getting your rain and it's not a bad trade off this summer. Especially with all the garbage that's sitting around Toronto right now. The humidity would just make that so much worse.

That's what I thought - you're basically paying for daycare that provides and education. Sounds like a Waldorf or Montessori one at that.

This depends entirely on where you go. My pre-K cost more than that, but we sent the boy to a good private school with integrated PK. The cheaper route, for us, was church PK. We did that for two years before we moved to the current place.

Yeah, my school is in one of the better suburbs of Atlanta, so there's going to be a price difference just for that. Of particular note, Alton Brown has his kids in the same school. It just gets worse as they get older, too.

You are lucky, here in Toronto pre-k and integrated k/sk with daycare are charged on a sliding scale based on parental income.
If a single parent brings home ~30k a year, they would pay about 675 dollars a month for their child to go to a public, religious or semi-public facility.
When I started to look at different private options five years ago I nearly gagged when I saw they were in the 1.5k-2k range per month. Then when I was told that I would have to pay 3.7k per month in order to enroll my daughter in a normal daycare I threw up a bit in my mouth.
Hooray for socialism with a two tier system bolted on.

Haha, fuck that. No kid needs that much money spent on their education. Buy them a computer, books, and toys and let them do their thing.

So today I went to see the manager of the townhouse place we rent and complained that the rent increase is too high. So they slashed it in half. Then I handed her a list of things I want done, such as new wood floors (instead of the cheap tile that's in there) in the kitchen and bathrooms, replace the carpeting in the entrance hall and dining room with wood, new paint, some appliances replaced, reseal the doors, and a bunch of other more minor stuff. She said every thing on my list is perfectly acceptable and agreed to have it all done.
WTF?

Figure it would cost her at least three months rent to fix up your unit and find a replacement tenant even during the best of times. On top of that, you have to consider the home renovation and eco grants/tax-breaks/freebies going around these days in the Northern Hemisphere, and the landlord probably comes out ahead.

Yea, the economic crisis doesn't seem so bad now, does it? Does it? My property taxes are going to be pleasantly low this year.

I'm always surprised when I get what I want. I live in a corporately owned golf course townhouse (no, I don't play golf) and just figured they'd say no to everything. You know. Because.
I don't know what to do now. I have almost nothing to bitch about.
I wasn't high when I went there, Sky. (relatively speaking)

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe
