actually, you're wrong. what am i saying. :P certain things are borked, i tell ya!

They're just not set up out of the box the way you would like, and you're acting like a disgruntled Mac UI user rather than a Unix user. I've worked with Unix for 25 years and I'm happy that the BSD environment in Mac OS X is essentially sound.

you need to hack terminal with in an input manager to display color ls with custom colors.

You want this?

alias ls='/bin/ls -G'
export LSCOLORS=exfxcxdxbxegedabagacad

Notice that Terminal.app has very little to do with the BSD subsystem. It is an Aqua app. Your rant is akin to criticizing Unix because Sendmail sucks. Use something else if you don't like it. I recommend screen which has ANSI everything pretty much as you want right out of the box.

I'm not sure why you want Apple's X11 to run full screen. That's not what it is for - its specifically designed to allow you to run X11 apps on your Aqua desktop. If you want a distinct X11 desktop use any other X11 server. Right tool for the job, don't bitch that a screwdriver is shit at hammering in nails.

You can't run OpenOffice on any platform without Java. Guess why. If you don't like the way it is bundled on the Mac, fix it yourself - it runs with any qualified Java, you just have to set up your environment and change the scripts.

You tried to install a shell that uses Tex transformations on its documentation and whose package in MacPorts is flagged to require it, so it tried to install Tex. That's correct behaviour. Instead of blaming it on the design of Mac OS, or even on the MacPorts package repository, blame the twit who created the package. Probably the guy who ported fish to the Mac.

So really you have no complaints leveled against Mac OS for its Unix behaviour but a bunch of application problems that you are too lazy to address. You choices are basically customise your environment to suit you, pay a consultant to do the same or live with it. You appear to have fucked up the first option, ignored the second, settled for the third and want to bitch about it in an illogical way. I'm not sympathetic.

It was so long since I used unix that I basically learned (for the second time) on darwin, so the modded BSD is home for me. So I bum out when they change around a few things, but then I learn how to do stuff like alias the removed commands, so it's all good. Taking off on Yeg's point, I almost think the changes are intentional.

And over the years I've enjoyed doing stuff through the terminal in a few seconds that my mac cohort was spending money on shareware to do.

Though I was dicking around with my dock icons and lost my finder and trash icons. I've changed them before but forgot how, I guess I misremembered :) Also, it seems the newest generation of keyboards Apple is shipping doesn't quite want to do boot keys properly. Had to haul out a previous gen keyboard to boot into safe mode. But I do love these new ones, so sleek and they don't fill up with shit like the last few gens did.

Dental work sucks. I now have 3 crowns in a nice row, shredded gums, and severe pain.

Vicodin with a cognac chaser is only dulling the pain and making me really, really dizzy. I'm going to attempt to play video games anyway.

No, I don't want that. But thanks. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

The problem isn't displaying color ls. Nor is it that I don't know how to put color in my shell profile. Come now, I may be inexperienced, but I'm not that much of a noob.

It's that the colors defined as blue/green/red/etc are hard coded in the app and will burn holes in your eyes. There is no preference panel to redefine them in Leopard. So you need an input manager to fix it. It has nothing to do with unix - and i never said it did. My only point is that Apple created a shitty app to interact with the command line with. It's always been an app complaint here. And I never wanted sympathy, I was just doing some late night ranting.

As for X11 and fullscreen - I want it because I want it. The fact that it's broken is that there's even a box to check fullscreen - but it's blurred out. That isn't "by design". That is broken. The fact that they didn't even change the preferences interface to reflect this though (as opposed to just showing you the fullscreen preference, yet blurring it out) shows just how much they give a fuck about the UNIX side of things. Features are not only missing, but they're too lazy to even adjust the interface to reflect that.

OpenOffice.. configure it myself? That easy eh? Is this why the OpenOffice team can't even do it themselves? Have you even used it to know what I'm referring to here?

Not that I really care, but you guys are being patronising yet don't even know wtf I'm talking about apparently. It's silly. Telling me how to configure the ls command is not even relevant.

One of my most favorite DAOC (I think) sessions was a couple of days after I got my wisdom teeth removed. Hadn't had much pain, so hadn't taken pain killers since the day of the surgery. Got sore, took a couple of Vicodin, and 15 minutes later I was having FUN  awesome, for real

it is decent, but even more ridiculously cheap is free or open source, i believe. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly? i wouldn't try to get that polish out of free apps or anything, but it'd be nice to get satisfactory alternatives that work the same way as they do on another *nix desktop, or even windows. it's pretty much there, but not quite. although in some cases, the mac has better free software than linux. linux doesn't even have a native picasa.

I have had an accident with some of my saved TV shows and require urgent access to such.   Alas, not being a filthy pirate (and having strong morals on such) I have no idea how to go about replacing them.

Bittorrent popped into my mind as an idea, but I have no idea where's best to get, fastest, cleanest, etc.

I thought Schild was nuts against this stuff ?

I have 7 episodes of Prison Break season 4 a-missing. The first 7.

Was hoping to get some nice quality packed up type help.  You know how fucking lazy I am.   (No, really, you should).

And I was seriously under the impression that torrenting was something you spat on around here Schild.  Possibly I'm thinking of some other owner of this site.  Who knows.

Well, that's ok, since I don't approve of that myself.

I'm morally rationalising this one in 3 ways :

1 - I'd recorded it anyways.  (past tense, dammit.)
2 - I AM going to buy the box set in July for completeness.
3 - There's a woman involved.

I think I'm covered.

It's been an interesting weekend.

Cut a good chunk of my hair off and resigned from my (now former, I suppose) political group's board position on principle.  It's funny to me because I seem to always get my hair cut when I have a major life-changing event.  Only this time I cut my hair first.

C'est la vie.  Hopefully Locks of Love can make use of it.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!
