Haha, for a split second just now I thought we were being bombed. Then I remembered that SF tests its air raid sirens on Tuesdays at noon. I don't think I've been here for that in almost ten years.

Linux still sucks.
But Mac OS X still sucks at setting up what is no problem at all in Linux: a good ole fashioned UNIX environment. Uhhrrgg. I want a little bit of both in my setup. Damnit even the Terminal is borked.

I have it, but it's a badly designed app in it's own right.  But at least not in the term aspect No excuse for Apple for screw something so simple up though. Also, many ports are borked (don't know about fink). I tried installing fish (a shell) and it started installing two behemoths : tex and a whole new implementation of X11.  For a fucking shell. Also, Apple's own X11 is borked, so I appreciate the concern for a better version of it - but jesus. I just wanted a shell. And a term that displayed like 8 fucking colors correctly. ...among other things... /rantoff [edit] On the other hand, I had to go out of my way on linux simply to hide partitions in gnome. it's really quite inexcusable. year after year they can't get simple shit right either. even moreso than anyone. fucking ready for the desktop my ass. goddamn liars, all of them. |

Both Terminal and iTerm display ANSI colors just fine.
fish requires Doxygen which requires TeX and Doxygen has a GUI which requires X11. If you want something better than bash without the ridiculous requirements of fish try zsh.

you need to hack terminal with in an input manager to display color ls with custom colors. the default blue is an eyesore. at least on black it is. for example, this guy has a more pleasant scheme. yeah, i'm gonna explore zsh, comes default anyways :) |

iTerm you just double-click on the color you want to change in profiles and pick a new one from the color wheel.

yeah, i know! but it's sort of a clunky app Mac-wise  see, this is my main bitch (about a few issues, not just iterm). apple doesn't do unix well, but the foss world doesn't deliver exactly like mac developers either (not always of course.. i mean there are a lot of cool open source cocoa apps don't get me wrong). |

I think it's funny to want to use a UNIX variant but complain about having to hack-to-customize something. Also it seems your problems stem from reliance on a GUI.

No, no, it's just that it's all done half-assed. Although I don't care to hack anything really, you're right about that. I like using some UNIX stuff, but sometimes it makes it inconvenient or less than ideal. OS X might have UNIX branding, but that actually takes a major second seat to everything else. The most basic elements just leave something to be desired. The term doesn't display ansi colors correctly by itself, nor can it even do something simple as run fullscreen, and X11 can't run fullscreen either. Hmm, what else... Umm, openoffice can't even be ported correctly. It comes in a giant java wrapper, instead of modular like other operating systems.

No way, no one gives a shit about UNIX or linux. Also OpenOffice is a ball of shit and uses Java because it's made by Sun. Luckily it is free, therefore I use it. |

On a useless note to you all, but not to me, I have applied to UC to be part of their accelerated engineering program. If accepted I will get a Bachelors in Electrial Engineering and a Masters in Computer Engineering sometime in the next 5 years. Mech. Engineering was full-up for years.. go figure, electrical seems more fun to me. When I did my FASFA last year when I talked about this actually having a job hurt me to a significant degree. Being unemployed means my expected contribution is only $6k a year. How odd. Here's hoping I write an awesome enough essay to get accepted despite my lackluster transcripts. |
