I mean these cats - http://www.bdry.com/ It'll probably run at least 5k that I don't have right now thanks to buying and renovating. But I /really/ want to be able to do laundry and the basement pretty much sucks for that right now. More importantly, I don't want structural issues down the road, so I'm trying to find creative ways for paying for this stuff now. I think I have the gutters covered, half the house isn't guttered and the half that is sucks.

Debating leaf covers, so any feedback from the resident homeowners on that front is welcome. Not cheap, it'll inflate the project (estimated, of course) from just over 1k to about 2k, but with the price of metals going nuts, if I want to do it I had better do it now. The plumber for my bathroom ren told me I could pay for all his work and pocket a few bucks just by replacing my copper vent stack with pvc and selling it. Crazy times.

you can buy the cheapy non custom plastic leaf guards at home depot, they just snap over your gutters.  not sure how they hold up in different climates but in Austin they seem to work okay for me.

I also found out recently that it's probably going to cause my property value to go up, which sucks.  I had always been told that a pool will reduce the value, but I have a saltwater pool and apparently those have the opposite effect.

Nah, improvements will always increase the property value, since that's assessed by the government for your taxes.  Wether or not it improves the RESALE value or not is debatable since it's like any other optional home feature like vaulted/ cathedral ceilings or 9ft first floor plates. Some folks (like me) just won't buy a house with a pool, since you don't know what problems you're inhereting there AND the homeowner's/ liaibility insurance is a nightmare.  Some insist on having them and some just don't care one way or the other.

I'll mention that if you have trees around you can just get those crap gutter covers and they work just fine, however you are likely to have to get up there every now and then and clean up.  I had metal mesh covers that worked fine but I still had to get the leaves and straw off eventually or the water would just roll over the top.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Hey, schild, you can still move in with me.  Other applicants, please send your resume in a PM.
What's the pay, benefits and responsibilities?  Term of commitment?  Do you mind your wife being hit on?  Does she mind?  What alcohol or snacks are provided?

Is use of the pool included?

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Does your house have a sump pump?  I'm guessing not given its age.  I wonder if those guys will install one when they 'proof' your basement.

I've heard the cheapo leaf covers work well.  I don't have any trees around me tall enough to even remotely put leaves in my gutters so I can't share first hand info.  However, mentioning gutters and water in the basement makes me think of something else.  Is your place old enough to have a cistern somewhere on the lot?  If so you might want to look at repurposeing that to water your lawn with somewhere down the road. Just make sure you put a locking cover over the thing.  Stupid kids like to fall in them.

Might also make sure that the earth around the house is packed fairly tight and sloped away from the house. Just doing that on our house made almost as much of a difference as adding longer outlet pipes on our downspouts and covering up the basement windows with those little plastic domes. We had to buy a load of dirt to backfill, but dirt is pretty cheap.

Yeah, they'll do the whole trench and pump thing. They go to town, a coworker just had them do her basement so she could finish it. No cistern, house was built in 1930.

Chimpy, I do need to regrade. The worst spot is near the front door, water from about 1/3 of the roof is dumping there and the base under the blacktop (don't ask why my sidewalk is blacktop undecided and it's a huge assumption that there is a proper base) is sunken down, half the water intrudes there. It's a mess, but once it's under control with some properly installed measures, it should be a lot better.

That said, the water table is pretty high in the area, so I don't have much in the way of hopes for a fully finished basement.

I went down into the basement to do some laundry. It has been taken over by spiders. And something has tunneled in again, as the pile of insulation in one corner (to be used when I get around to insulating the ceiling in the other side of the basement) has been chewed/shredded up to form a nest.

Last time it was woodchucks, I'm hoping it's not the skunks under the porch this time.

Oh, man.  A friend of mine has this big mean cat that will go bug fuck crazy at any moment and claw the hell out of anyone and anything near by.  She recently had some possums living under her house and one of them managed to find a way in through some loose floor boards.   Yeah, from what her description it sounded like an abattoir, blood and possum fur EVERYWHERE.  At 3 am.   ACK!

This is the best thing ever.  Shit, I wish my wife would leave me.  Financially it sucks, but its kinda like being a pheonix.  A new rebirth.

This makes me want to get another divorce!

There are 6 cats in the house, but the basement is offlimits to them. Any spiders/ants/mice that come upstairs die quickly, as did the squirrel that decided to taunt Dagmar by coming up to the screen.

Since our divorce was finalized, my ex and I get along together better than before we were married.  Our friends are always amazed, meh.  I think the secret is not to fuck each other once you separate.  I have so many friends that tried to get back together during the separation and then had horribly messy divorces that still reverberate to this day.  Also, using kids to get back at each other for perceived injustices that occurred years ago is  awesome, for real .
