Owning a snake is indeed awesome, but beware cheap pipes. When I first got mine I ran into what I thought was the blockage; the damn thing wouldn't move forawrd. So I started twisting the damn thing faster and and faster for a minute or so. Bam! it broke through the tough spot. And my feet were wet. Turns out I'd gotten it stuck in the u-bend and just drilled through the pipes. They were pretty damn thin, so it wasn't entirely because I sucked, but it still wasn't fun to clean up.

Selby, sounds like you aren't half-bad at plumbing from that story. I haven't had the displeasure of trying my hand at plumbing yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

If you own your home, you will go here. Sadly we give our plumbing (sewage) all that we do not want to deal with. And in time it will pay us back. Try to keep grease out(I keep a coffee can in the fridge for waste grease). But hair is gonna get ya some time down life's road. If you can find a good plumber, for gods sake pay his bill. And listen to him.

Yup. The one good plumber I knew said the most important thing was to not use chemicals in your sinks if you are having clogging problems. Because the ones you buy at the store that claim to unclog drains instantly don't necessarily do it right away and then the plumbers get a face\arm full of chemical burns when he has to take it apart anyway. He recommended several products for maintenance, but said that by the time it was starting to be a serious problem it usually was too late to be solved with chemicals. Considering the mess I've had to deal with so far, he wasn't too far out there. I just hate plumbing. I hate the goopy mess that is in the pipes. New installs aren't too bad, just having to deal with food byproducts and waste, no thanks. I'm cheap, so I end up doing it anyway and learning a valuable skill. But that doesn't mean I have to like it! ;-)

Since our pipes are made of galvanized zinc (hell of old school), the chemicals just cause flakes of rust to build up with food bits. He recommended an enzymatic pipe cleaner instead of chemicals. What can't bacteria do?

He recommended an enzymatic pipe cleaner instead of chemicals. Exactly what I was recommended and what we use. Whether it works or not, at least it doesn't leave nasty burns.

I think the Russians are fucking with the weather. It's the middle of August and it was chilly today. Tomorrow it's going to be downright cold... like 65 or something. WTF.

It's been that way on and off all summer for us - today it got cold enough in the house that the heat would've kicked on if it weren't turned off. I think this may actually be the coldest summer I have ever experienced! Our tomatoes have been on the vine for more than a month and still won't ripen.

I grew up in the country. We had to keep our garbage cans locked up in a bin to keep out animals, eventually lined it with some tin to keep out the little burrowy guys. So I find things like garbage disposals very odd. You garden, that's mulch pile crap imo. Otherwise, I put stuff like that in baggies and put it in a crisper drawer in the bottom of the fridge (so as to not stink up the garbage) and toss it out on garbage day. Ditto grease, just pour it in a baggie, it's easier (imo) than using ye olde coffee can.
Plumbing. I'm apparently pretty decent with plumbing. I practice at my apartment when stuff breaks and in six years haven't needed a plumber at all. Sure, I could ask my landlord, but they take months to fix anything and don't care if you have to shower at a friends house the entire time. So. I'm the plumber. I've replaced fixtures, snaked pipes, anything within my realm of access has been replaced or cleaned meticulously at least once. I'm eyeing the shower, because it was a CHEAP instal (see two sentences ago, my landlord should stay away from plumbing and really anything "handyman"ish). I want to rip out the cheap vinyl lining (installed shitty) and fix/replace the pipes and fixtures in the wall (installed shitty). Also the tub needs to be ripped out an levelled. But I'm not spending the money on it, and I'm sure the landlord won't either.
It's great experience for when I actually have a home and don't have the backup of calling the landlord and complaining. I find it very rewarding to rip plumbing out, fix it, and replace it.

Must be nice. It's been 94+ for about 2 1/2 weeks here. I'll love some cool weather. Hell, even 80s would be "cold" right now.

94 was comfortable. We hit 102, 104, then 106 on a 3-day stretch last week. Walking three dogs at 7 pm when the temperature still hasn't gotten below 100 is a fucking nightmare.

I must not have told the story of Spud, our latest dog. I find him underneath a neighbor's porch one day (well, the Snow Beast found him and wanted to play). He looked to have a broken leg, which the vet confirmed. After days of trying to find some shelter that had room to take him in (a huge problem around here) AND a place that wouldn't euthanize him if the leg happened to be untreatable, and having no luck because of the huge stray dog problem in this state, we decided to keep him and name him Spud. He's a cute, fucking crazy energetic smooth fox terrier. I haven't gotten any pictures of him yet, which is something I need to rectify.

I imagine that it would be one of those cartoons that people think is for children but really isn't.

How about the part where he puts a little cowboy hat on the small dog and lets it ride in a saddle on the big dog? How about that part?

We had to put my wife's cat to sleep today. It had been lethargic for about 2 1/2 weeks now and she finally listened to me and took her to the vet. Feline lukemia, and she was only 18 months old. The wife's devastated as is the daughter. The son being 3 1/2 doesn't understand and just says "Dad, Jinx is gone!"in that creepy cheery-kid way.

Having had to put down 3 cats in my life time, one that I'd had since I was 10 years old till I was 29, my condolences. Few days in life suck as hard as those.

I can't stand pets. Any of them. It's one of those weird 'You are a worthless Human Being' things I have going on.
It's also a shame, since the wife has wanted a dog for as long as I can remember.
