And here I was thinking it would just be cheaper to strap immigrants down on the rotors and have them stick their hands out.

Yep. Gorillas Twin-Hueys in the Mist Snow: Short clip, the first helicopters starting this morning for the next missions. Mainly love it because of the classic Huey sound. *chefkiss* https://twitter.com/Bundesheerbauer/status/1083645372709380096Edit: 10 second Youtubeclip: Black Hawk downwash hitting snow covered trees: https://youtu.be/_Px1zxCna58

So, at least this weather is producing some cool heli pictures: Today saw more supply choppering to villages which are cut of due to the weather situation Here to Johnsbach: To give you some context I screenshotted the village in Google Earth: One road in, and you can't use it because of avalanches. I don't want to be overly dramatic, but we are basically having a second Điện Biên Phủ situation here, except it's cold. And there no Vietcong. Aside from that pretty much the same! Oh, and 45 German students plus teachers on a ski trip were stuck in their mountain lodge and got choppered out. Free adventure holiday.

Out of curiosity, why are they bothering to clear snow from the trees (not that it isn't nifty, 'cuz it is, and honestly if I had a helicopter I'd look for reasons to fly it). Are they worried about them becoming road hazards in some way?

That's exactly whats happening. The trees are buckling under the snow load. All images from the current weather: It's not all bad though, produces some nice vistas: Plus, the local fauna is adapted to it: Yeah...

I have friends I suspect don't even own long pants, but I have NEVER understood shorts in the cold. Then again, I'm the weirdo wearing jeans and tennis shoes on Hawaii while everyone else is in shorts and flip-flops. Perhaps I'm not in the best position to judge

We get heavy precip on trees here every few years. Going to have to find someone to remove the maple from my yard, last year it got decimated in an ice storm.

And we have 4 dead. German skitourers used a route that was closed due to avalanche risk.
They promptly triggered one. Wife alarmed the authorities when they didn't come back. Rescue squads localised their mobile phones and found them. But that was hours later and too late of course.

"Glad" to know crazy weather doesn't just bring out the crazy in people locally. Bad snow here is dangerous not just for all the old people who no longer have the skills/reflexes to deal with it, but all the young fools who think they do (and might have, before they liquored themselves up). That said, if we ever saw anything like that around here I imagine even the crazy rednecks would stay cowering inside next to the wood stove. I know I would be.

It's actually illegal to do that in Germany. I don't know if the Eastern Reich has the same rules.

I think it is probably illegal in most states. But just like driving without your lights on when it is raining, or not wearing a seatbelt, they won’t stop you for it specifically but will add it to your ticket if there is an incident.

I know two people who were stopped for only this in PA, not in addition to another moving violation. Small sample size and very much biased to only my small circle of friends, but still. I was specifically stopped for nothing more than having my windows tinted darker than the law allows here. But that was in a higher end suburb of Pittsburgh where they are now also enforcing jaywalking laws, so YMMV. Either way... it should be a mandatory stop and have the person clean it off and issue a warning/ticket. Can't tell you how many times I see the after effects of this shit blowing off and hitting cars/trucks behind.

Haha, nice.
How much actual snowfall are we talking about here? Obviously a shitload, but this stuff drifts as well so it can be misleading.

That beer would be a slushy!
Reminds me of Moscow. All of our apartments had these sort of weird smoking spaces. It wasn't a balcony, but it was shaped just like one and would be where one should be. It was totally enclosed, but had big windows you could open to pretend like it was a balcony (again, it was basically a smoking room). Biggest thing though, was unlike the rest of the apartment, this room had no insulation. So during winter we could just leave what ever we wanted to be frozen out there because the temp on average was colder in that room than our actual freezers. So we would basically do that same thing all the time, heh.

I got into the habit, years ago, of keeping my beer in the pantry and moving a few to the freezer after dinner. I have the timer dialed in pretty perfectly, but when it starts to move into winter, there are a few slushy night before I remember to knock 5-10 minutes off the timer for the winter.
Also, I need to move to Austria. Do you have social healthcare?

I think it's ok to call it a Balcony even if it's enclosed. It's not like the N-word. Snow levels: I have no idea. Where I live we have heavy snowing in the night, then rain on the day washing it away, repeat. It sucks. Two pictures I made one day apart: Of course, we have socialist medicine. And you can get private insurance too, which is on top rather than instead of the public one. That pays for stuff like a single room in the hospital or more choices for lunch. When I was last in hospital I got booked into a private insurance room because the others were full. It was exactly the same room (2 patients), except we had a mini-fridge and the others not. Woooo!
