I come back from a trip and people are all getting married and stuff.  Dogs and cats... living together.  Mass hysteria!

Congratulations Rattran

This.  Just got back from 5 days of breathing smoke and ash in WA for the bro-in-law's wedding.

Congrats to the married person, I agree with Ironwood on the MZ ranting (or maybe just IW ranting in general), and the jokes made me laugh.  Hope they help, Signe and whatever was causing problems is easily solved.

Was that the Walla Walla fires? That one is pretty big.

I can't believe how dry it is in Seattle. Some plants I have are just dead, which has never happened to us before.

Not sure what the "official" name is for these fires; I was in the Chelan/Manson area on Lake Chelan.  The smoke was coming downlake from the fires that ended up with Holden and some other small town being evacuated.  Quickie Google search results in the name "Wolverine fires" for this one.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Wildfire-along-Lake-Chelan-grows-to-40-square-miles-320635262.html
http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Mayor-frustrated-as-thick-smoke-forces-evacuations-at-Lake-Chelan-320524232.html

And this is some of what I got to see while we were there.  Panorama shots from their deck looking towards the lake.  The mountains you can see in the background of the first image are the other side of the lake, btw.

Friday night:

Saturday night:

This was the worst.  Nothing like having to blow ash out of your glass before filling it for a wedding toast.

Sunday night:

I wish I'd gotten a photo on Monday night because the winds had cleared out a lot of smoke, but wasn't able to.

Wow. Thanks for sharing.

We had pretty hazy conditions a few weeks ago from the fires on the other side of the Olympics, but nothing like that.

Yea, its been like that up here from time to time the last month or two. Had what looked like a Blood Moon last week just from all the smoke/haze.

What's all that green stuff ? Why isn't it brown?

Let's see, catching up... Congrats Rattran. Seems very odd for someone here to get married without discussing their significant other in detail for years first.

The fire in Walla Walla was the Blue Creek fire and it is 100% contained(thank god). This has been a brutal fire season so far in eastern Washington. My friends up in Wenatchee had to evacuate for a few days. Some other friends parents down in Walla Walla lost their house in the Blue Creek fire. At one point they had over 1000 firefighters in Walla Walla fighting the fire. It was pretty interesting watching the helicopters and tanker planes flying over to dump water on the flames.

If you are curious this is a good site listing all the fires across the west. Being that fire season is really just getting going its going to be a long few months.

Geez, you guys.  Be careful out there.  Try not to breathe so much.

Just to fit in:  A few days ago I blew out a candle and the smoke detector went off.  I ran outside but no one came to help.  And as usual, FEMA never responded.

Srsly, though.  My sister already has a friend who lost her home to wildfire this year.  It was heartbreaking, but at least she made it out.  Evidently, it was really fast.

Yeah, the fires near Wenatchee threatened the airport earlier in July (or maybe it was late June) which worried me for a bit since that's where we fly into from Seattle.  Then it's about an hour to Manson where the BiL lives.

I was amazed at all the sprinkler systems I'd see going in the middle of the day though.  I mean, I get that it was 100+F with no humidity (made a nice change from Chicagoland's sweatbox) but to me, it seemed like a waste of water.  I was told that they get it from the lake, so no shortage to worry about.  I guess.  I did giggle a bit at the Smokey the Bear sign with the fire danger rating on it.  It was listed as "extreme" on the last day we were there, which wasn't a surprise.

Sorry about your friend's parent's house.  That's got to be rough to go through, especially when it's something you have no control over and there's nothing you can do about it.

Just in time for me to move there, then. I've been spending the last week driving around the Bay Area, trying to find housing, and being crushed with all-consuming despair.

Then again, I get to leave Saint Louis.

What area will you be working in?

And yeah, I managed to get housing at a decent price because I spent a few months before every move randomly checking ad's and keeping an eye out.  It can be a terrible process trying to do short term unless you get lucky, and its only gotten worst since I left.  The bay area is booming like none other, and way to much money is flooding into it.

Really? WC struck me as "overdeveloped, culturally void suburbia filled with awful white people" while StL is more "generic sprawling urban shithole." Out in the county it would be more similar, I guess.

Ah yes, my main experience with StL is out in the more burby areas, which I think is what you mean by "the county".  Your assessment of WC is dead on.

I asked my mom once when I was a kid if she thought she'd ever move out to someplace like Walnut Creek, where she could get a way bigger house for cheaper, like some of her brothers had.  She said "I couldn't stand to live there, it's nothing but smug white people."   awesome, for real

When I was young and working my first real job, I was hit from behind by a drunk, tractor trailer driver with a full load of stone.  I was very luck that he hooked onto my back rear panel and veered to the right.  It save me from being consumed by him and the man in front of me.  He blamed the truck but that was so obviously bollocks.  He wasn't even licensed to drive one of those gargantuan trucks.  For some reason, my own insurance company wouldn't pay my medical or repair bills... it wasn't totaled.  I had to sue them.  I hated that.  So, I got this lawyer, Christian Southerling, and he won the lawsuit for me.  I got my medical bills paid, which by that time were pretty big, and my car repaired and was awarded $30K minus something like $11K or $12K for the odd little Norwegian Southerling.  Unfortunately, he didn't give me the money although my bills were paid.  He used it to by himself stuff.  I had to fucking sue my insurance company and my own lawyer... BUT... some sort of shady lawyer state funding stepped in and gave me the full amount.  My other lawyer only charged me $1K because we didn't have to go to court or anything and he was only my lawyer for like 2 days and he was a friend of my sister.  So, I got like $29K which I used to pay off the car ($600) and I gave the rest away... I'm not especially good with actual real life money.

My lawyer was arrested and spent four days in jail.  I didn't have to testify that time.  Five years later, I was asked to testify to keep him from getting his license back but I didn't.  By that time he was totally sober and broke and had lost just about everything he owned.  That was enough, I think, no?  In the end, it totally worked out for me although it was a dreadful experience.  The only other thing I sued for was divorce but that's different, right?  I think the Southerling went ditsy again later, though.  Not sure.

Here's his pic in case you need a dodgy lawyer:
