No I don't want to learn a different language.  Go java but yes fuck Oracle.

That "Java would like to run this with a newer version." sounds like an actual client program which would suck though.  It's still good for server side and whatever we're calling embedded these days however.

IT'S FANTASTIC SERVER SIDE AND NOT OVER-ENGINEERED IN THE SLIGHTEST!

Why wouldn't you want a dozen classes and two dozen config files to do something simple?

Edit: Plus you can cram the two dozen config files into horrible looking pseudo code inside the actual java now!  Problem solved!

I support Java apps (among other things) for a living. In my experience, everybody who isn't a Java developer feels that way. I don't know much about the actual language but it sure has the most incomprehensible stack traces I've ever seen.

I hate anything that requires an external package (beyond the OS) to run.

Differing versions of Java and .NET are some of my biggest banes.  Of course we have software that needs every version of .NET between 2.0 and 4.5.  Maybe we'll get 5.0 with Win 9.0.  Yay.  Then there's all the patching that has to be done for all of it because PCI compliance.

Oh, goddammit you beat me to this.  This is mostly a Java bash but also some IBM, since they are the ones that said IBM Network Advisor is ONLY supported on Java 7u51, no higher and no lower.  I mean, come on.  I want to blame Heartbleed, but that's just my grumpy guts.  Besides this, INA is embedded in a larger system which has components requesting different Java variants.

I did actually take Trippy's advice and am now using a RHEL VM to connect to the fucking thing.  I'm not really sure what to do when I run into a conflicting Java version request, but at least I have a machine that the Laptop Overlords can't patch.

From what I am hearing from others in the industry and on the news, PCI compliance isn't really that much to worry about. why so serious?

Hahaha.

It's a bitch to implement for a small company with one IT person who's already overworked with a support budget of nothing.  Frankly I'm surprised we got far enough along to get the initial cert.  Plus they'll assume we can just whip things into shape on day T-minus 1 for the renewal.  Not like they fucking listen to me on any of my other warnings.

Normally you'd be right, but here it's the requirement to use an exact version that I find to be complete shit.  I'm sure that it's because of the state of development of the Pureflex/FSM package, meaning that the developers are busy fixing terrible problems and don't have time for validation of the NUMEROUS JAVA UPDATES.  So we are back to blaming Oracle. awesome, for real

*sigh*

This all sounds pretty normal.

It's the only two things they do. It's the whole reason they have tablets because it was going to "save money" rather than printing 50 pages every couple of weeks. We actually hand them out with the one web page they need to view as an icon, but they're having trouble switching from one to the other. Apparently one class and regular use isn't enough for them to press the button and tap an icon.

I'll buy that a tablet saves money in convenience costs and so on, by why the fuck do they need a $600+ iPad instead of some shitty $50 no-name Chinese Android tablet if all they need is a web-browser and a PDF reader?

Both of these plus "Apples just work" is a meme that many less tech savvy people blurt out at you all the time. Particularly if they're convinced beyond all reason that, "THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY USES MAC" even when you have 4 guys in the office who came from PC environments and are on a PC in your office saying, "Uh, no."

We live in a black box world.  Most people prefer to use devices that require little knowledge of said device.  I'll bet that if you ask 100 people how a car or television works, only about 20 will give a reasonable answer.

I find the whole thing disconcerting, particularly as often as I see it happening in science.  I see colleagues using instruments and reagent kits daily in their labs with little understanding of their limitations.

I wouldn't mind if the culture of disdain for experts weren't also growing.

"I"m telling you it has to work this way unless you're going to pay for someone to create a custom software solution. This is just the way the program is written."

"I disagree, because I don't like that answer."

Some of that is because "experts" have been to known to give people half-truths that cover up the fact they don't want to do extra work.

My industry is guilty of it. We'll often give people half the information because if you actually tell them the whole thing, they'll want you do try and calculate their infinitely small chance of getting a deduction for their boat, but then not pay you for that knowledge.

They can't use an Apple product without training and you think they're going to figure out an off brand Android one?! Also, I was pretty sure that every problem we had with it would be blamed on it not being a real ipad and these are the people who sign my check.
