My kid is hilarious. He spent twenty minutes in recovery asking -- every three minutes -- the following "Do I still have an IV in?.....Where am I?....Did I die?" (the latter was joking, in very much the 'I made up my mind to make this joke several days ago and I remember I'm supposed to say it').
He's currently sacked out on the couch, enjoying the sleep that a body unused to hydrocodone gets when you, you know, take some.
So since I'm home, I called the AC guy to come look at the age-old question of "Why the hell is there a ridiculously large bang when my AC kicks on and off" (no, it's not the air return thing -- not unless it's blocked at the top. I replaced the filter several days ago.)

Not the fan -- only happens when the actual AC kicks on and off (and not every time), but it's loud as hell, obviously wrong and I'd prefer to be proactive then wait until it breaks and I have no AC. It's hot down here.

I don't know what the makeup of my drain clogs are, but a plastic zip tool is the thing. I don't know why it would be composed of fat, but I might try detergent next time. What's the worst that could happen?

Perhaps a capacitor issue?

Protein is the usual cause which is why Draino (a strong base) works so well. Detergent just solublizes fat. Nothing to worry about really.

Perhaps a capacitor issue? The dang thing would not, of course, do it while he was here. He checked all the moving bits and the return. He's of the mind that it's the return *somehow* but it's all clear and sealed, so.....not sure why there'd be a VERY intermittent pressure spike that would pop the metal of the return. It's not something that's gonna fly off or anything, so that's been ruled out. (And that's more what I was worried about). Given the AC works, the only reason I called is because I'm off today and tomorrow to deal with the kiddo, so was easy to schedule.

OSC has some major issues--I guess really about the most major issue you could have really. They're not hard to figure out if you read his books because once it clicks, you see it everywhere. I think most of his life has been trying to deal with that, whether it was internalizing them, trying to write about them, or getting political.
Obviously I really dislike him and what he's done, but I pity him more than anything.

My motherfucking apartment complex is doing a total renovation of my apartment when I move out and tells me it needs to be cleaned as if it were a regular move out before they give me back my security deposit. Ho ho, fuckers, we'll see about that.
Edit: I should add - by total renovation I mean they're gutting fucking everything to bring it up to modern standards - including the flooring. As in, even if there's damage, it doesn't fucking matter because it's all gone. They even offered to do it while we lived here if we'd have moved out for two weeks. Obviously we didn't accept that offer because it was a pain in the ass. As such, they'll pry that full security deposit from my cold, dead hands before I pick up a fucking paper towel with 409 on it.

Had to go through the same shit too schild. Except, we stayed in the apartment and just moved our shit from room to room while they refloored and redid everything while we lived there. It was quite stressful. If you have to pack anyway, if you know of another place that's as good, just go.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Oh, we're planning on moving. I'm just not letting them take a fucking dime out of the security deposit.

You're in Texas. If you don't leave that place spotless, as in identical to when you moved in, they'll keep your deposit. You will not get it back without taking them to court, the fact that they were going to renovate won,t matter.

They don't have to give you back the security deposit. That's basically money you gave them in order for them to let you have an apartment. The law is entirely on the landlord's side, and there is no such thing as "spotless".

I've never gotten the security deposit back, no matter how much effort I put into getting the place cleaned. Steam vacs, day of solid cleaning, hiring a cleaning service, nothing. There's always something they can come up with that will take up the security deposit replacing. At this point, I just treat it as another move-in cost and make sure there's nothing they can charge me extra for when I move out.

I have no cares available about our security deposit, at this point if I divide it by the number of months we've lived here it is like $2 a month.

Maybe you should consult with Nerf on how to best diplomatically deal with your landlord regarding the situation?

One of the places I had in college when I moved out I cleaned the place better than it was when I moved in. The landlord was surprised I wanted my security deposit back and his statement was "Oh I never give security deposits back but since you did a nice job here is 100 bucks" needless to say I never rented from this guy again and made sure everyone knew what a douche he was. So good luck Schild I hope you get some / most of it.

TYPICALLY I don't care about security deposits.
I've never even asked for one back. But in this case, they're renovating the entire apartment. Floor to ceiling. As such, I don't see how they could explain keeping it.

I don't think I have ever not gotten the majority of my security deposit back (I think once they docked me $100 for not cleaning the oven). You all rent from some shady people.

The problem you'll run into is that they'll likely keep it until you decide to spend $430 on an attorney, at which point it's moot.

I've always gotten my full deposit back, and I'm not a particularly fastidious cleaner. Might be the Bay Area is a little nicer to renters, though.

It may be something in California's laws, which are typically more renter friendly.

Yeah, we went to visit one of my wife's friends out there and the little 1200 square foot (or maybe less) postage stamp she lived in would go for over a million.
