I've never read past the first 50 pages of the first book, but my wife has read them all. iirc, his wife was his editor.

Make sure to smooth out your dress every time you turn a page, out of respect for the author's writing prowess.

I'm never reading those books.

His wife didn't become editor until later, when things started to go to shit and you got paragraphs like that. The mannerisims and memes like braid-tugging, light-blinded, dress-smoothing and fascination with detailing the most mundane of shit (2 pages on a meal description!) were there before that, though.

I have most of them in hardcover, meaning to go back and finish some day.
I think I'll just clean out some shelf space, donate them to the library. I forgot how bad that series could be.

Don't know yet. Fairly sure it's going to be Type 1.
The only good news if this all turns out to be the case is that Diabetes is one of those that science is about to DESTROY WITH THE POWER OF SCIENCE, so even if worst comes to worst, I can't imagine living with it for a lifetime. We'll get it kicked into touch before then.
I hope.
They announced that they have apparently isolated the cause/pathway recemtly. Few years out on a meaningful cure they say, but it is good news. As someone who was very needle-phobic (to the point of going into major vasovagal response and passing out) and has now been living with a condition for 15 years that requires a lot of needle stuff (not to the extent of that though), you ultimately learn to adjust. I don't even bat an eye at this point. It does suck going though that transition though. Being young probably cuts both ways as they aren't all that equipped to deal with it in some ways but are also probably far more adaptable than us old fucks. Probably ultimately tougher on the parents watching them go through it. Sending good vibes your way.

On a lighter note, going to be in Virginia Beach next week. Anyone familiar or have recommendations on anything to check out?

Don't speed in Virginia. Even an incy wincy bit. The cops are anal about it. And don't go near Ashburn. Serial killers.

I have family in Virginia Beach and been out there a few times over the years. Not sure what you are looking for but here goes. The beach itself is just ok with so so parking and typically tons of people on the weekend during the week it is not as bad and there are a few decent restaurants down by the water. I like eating at harpoon larrys which is near the water, it is pretty much a hole in the wall but the beer / seafood is pretty good. http://www.harpoonlarryskillerseafood.com/ Probably my favorite thing was to do a boat tour of the Norfolk harbor. The Norfolk navel base is one of the biggest bases in the country and there are so many neat ships to see from that tour. http://www.navalbasecruises.com/ Virginia Beach also has a bunch of kid friendly things to do. The Aquarium is pretty slick http://www.virginiaaquarium.com/Pages/default.aspx As is the aviation museum http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/ The Air & Space center is pretty small but still a decent few hours. http://www.vasc.org/ Be careful driving when it rains I have seen more accidents when it rains. Also I am with Signe don't speed the cops out there are just looking to pull you over. Depending on where you stay there can be a ton of things to do.

Oh yeah, definitely a good one. And I must add, I like the idea of pitting two PC groups against each other. Makes me wish the DM had done that with the last game I was in instead of trying to manage 10 people in the group.

The fact that I just saw it for the first time serves as a reminder that I'm less of a nerd than I thought I was. Thanks for that!

We're getting a puppy. I'm totally against apart from the fact that our daughter is an only child and it'll be good for her, but at least it's distracting the wife from the whole new carpet/house conversation. I strongly suspect I've been out played in this marriage and it's not the first time.

Co-incidence abounds. We're hamster sitting in two days time and I suspect it's going to lead to the puppy conversation.
