Buying my dad anything is an exercise in futility, so he gets a phone call and a long discussion about golf.
The gift that keeps on giving. Yeah that would work, except my Dad is a panelist for golf digest. He gets free golf balls constantly. I'm not sure he's paid for any in years.

What's the reason you can't grind-down (For a new topcoat), trench and insulate the pipes in the existing slab? It's not structural is it?
A) Almost 100 year old concrete slab, I'm afraid what I'm going to find just pulling up the existing floor coverings. B) grinding = a much messier and bigger job than just putting in new flooring. I'll throw it in the options list and look at it when it becomes a budget reality. It's more likely to end up on the 'reasons to rent this house out and go buy a better house'. Which is getting longer every year. Bathroom is a separate area, under the half of the house with a basement.

Don't know yet. Fairly sure it's going to be Type 1.
The only good news if this all turns out to be the case is that Diabetes is one of those that science is about to DESTROY WITH THE POWER OF SCIENCE, so even if worst comes to worst, I can't imagine living with it for a lifetime. We'll get it kicked into touch before then.
I hope.

I can't imagine? It isn't you is it? You don't have to answer that, obviously.

No, my six year old daughter has been showing some bizarre symptoms for the past 3 weeks and all of them taken together point to her being diabetic. At present, it's a real House moment, as I'm 100% certain and I'm just waiting for the local doc to get his finger out his ass to confirm.
She's very squeamish and the idea of two needles a day for the rest of her life is filling her parents with dismay. As you can imagine.

That really sucks, Ironwood. I feel bad for you guys. I just had a good friend over here in the states learn that her 7 year old little boy has it. It's getting better though. The new pumps are much kinder and control glucose levels much better. You guys can definitely get through it, if that is what it turns out to be.

My sister got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes this year - and though it's a little scary, it's the best thing that ever happened to her. She's older than your daughter of course, but has suffered with bizarre and debilitating illness for as far back as I can remember. After being diagnosed and starting to treat her diabetes, it's the healthiest and happiest she has been in years.
It was the best bad news we have ever gotten, but it took a few months before we realized it.
I really hope the best for you guys and hope it all turns out the same for you.

Old neighbours of ours, one of their daughters is diabetic, not sure of the type, she has a pump attached that the parents said was a great improvement on the old way they used to deal with it. We tried to get a pump for the wife's mother, as we're starting to worry about her memory but they only do them for kids, or so they told her.
As you say, so many things are going to be sorted by medical advances in the near future, in the meantime sorry to hear that Ironwood.

Sorry to hear that, Ironwood, but if the diagnosis is correct and it leads to fixing any symptoms, then needle it is until she's old enough for a pump. Friend's daughter just celebrated her first di-anniversary (as her mom put it) recently, she's only 12. It can be a challenge when you have to explain to a kid why they can't eat X, Y, or Z any longer, I'm sure.
Lantyssa - sending good thoughts your way, cause I can't do anything else as a random internet forum person. Hope your dad isn't in any pain.

No, that's the shitty part. Mom and I would be dealing a lot better if he weren't in such pain. Our only solace is it'll be over soon. Kind of lose-lose all around.

Fuck the Illinois Toll Highway Authority right in the ear. Oh? What now? Did you finally run into the "we're going to charge you twice the toll if you don't have an iPass"? I ran into the "you owe us $176 for 8 toll violations" because I had a new transponder I picked up at jewel on my way up on a Saturday. Thing is, I called in like 3 days before and updated my vehicle information which the guy on the other end neglected to enter properly (he left off the last letter in the first word). The girl said she could waive the $160 in penalties but I would have to pay the cash rate for the tolls. And since I stopped at Ikea each way where they charge you both for the toll in the plaza just north of yet exit and for both the on and off ramps, that is like $8 extra. Now I have to wait for them to pull and review the call log to see if I can get they lowered to where it should be.

Speaking of Legos, the husband bought himself the F1 car.. sorry, the Grand Prix racer.. He loves the Technics stuff. I was joking about some of the Star Wars stuff and said he could get me an X-wing fighter. Not that I really want it, because I'd make him build it for me, but he was seriously tempted purely because of the number of pieces the model has. It's got more than anything he's built to date and that is the big attraction. I have a weird husband some days.

Don't lie, we know you just want it for yourself and you were going to make him build it for you: So there's apparently going to be a reissue of the LEGO UCS X-Wing, so I'll have something to put on top of another speaker. Hmm, I wonder if I could disguise a gift for myself as a gift for the husband, since he's the one who likes putting LEGOs together but I want one of these. Also I lied: So there's apparently going to be a reissue of the LEGO UCS X-Wing, so I'll have something to put on top of another speaker. I am so getting one of those. I got two of them One for me and one for my best friend's oldest son.

Bad news, indeed. These are both things I'm familiar with. :( I know that they make inhaled insulin for both sorts of diabetes and it works very well, but I don't know the long term ramifications that might affect the lungs or anything. They've also made good progress with home testing meters that don't involved finger pricking... which a lot of people have told me they felt that was worse than even injections. I had to inject a protein for quite a long time a while back using a pen made it much easier and almost painless. They make those pens for insulin, too, but I'm not sure if they're okay for kids. Lots to find out about, I guess. Best to you and your families, IW and Lantyssa. I you both lots.

Not any more. Only hospice care. Sorry to hear that. Been there. The hospice workers are generally great though. Hope you can get through to the end okay. When I went though it with my dad I was in a really weird emotional place of conflicted feelings about wanting them to hold on so you can spend every last moment with them and also wanting them to be out of pain. My only advice (not that you asked or necessarily need any) if you are having the same is to not be too self-critical about that. I beat myself up about it for a while after and they are really both natural human emotions and not really fundamentally incompatible.

Kind of there. There's no point to him holding on though. His quality of life is shit, and the only blessing is he's been too doped up and confused to really understand what's going on moment to moment. While I feel a twinge of guilt wishing it would be over, it's inevitable and there's no point to drawing out anyone's pain, especially his. (Seriously, doses of methadone, hydromorphone, and vallium, and it's barely enough.) That's why we opted for having a hospice nurse come around rather than some mess like Schiavo.
Dad's a practical man, even when staring down death.

WoT Book 10 Rants - This book is really slow going and I'm really just skimming at this point, but look at this fucking "paragraph". The other benches were beginning to fill, though slowly. Aledrin and Saroiya had joined Berana, Aledrin plump enough to make the other two appear slim. Of course, the vertical lines of white scrollwork running down Saroiya’s skirts had that effect anyway, while Aledrin’s wide white sleeves and the snowy panel running down the front of her dress did just the opposite. Each apparently was trying to find out whether the others knew what was afoot, from the way they were shaking their heads at each other and shooting glances toward the Blues, the Browns and the Greens. Varilin, a red-haired stork of a woman and taller than most men, had taken her seat beside Kwamesa, too. Adjusting and readjusting her shawl restlessly, Varilin darted her eyes from Moria to Escaralde to Malind and back. Magla, yellow-fringed shawl wrapped tightly around her broad shoulders, and Faiselle, a square-faced Domani in silks covered with dense green embroidery, were just entering the pavilion, each ignoring the other even when their skirts brushed. Magla was firmly in Romanda’s camp and Faiselle in Lelaine’s, and the two groups did not mix. Other sisters were trickling in by spurts, as well, Nisao and Myrelle among half a dozen or so who slipped in behind Magla and Faiselle. Morvrin was already among the Browns behind Takima and Escaralde, and Beonin stood on the edge of the Grays behind Varilin and Kwamesa. At this rate, half the Aes Sedai in the camp would be crowded into the pavilion before long. Seriously what the fuck.
