Everyone's getting snowed except Scotland.  It's not fair.  Brother in Canada has tons of snow.  The Bastard.

Foot to the floor with sharp, erratic turns of the wheel and be sure to slam the brakes on as hard as possible.

I see that you've driven in the Colorado Rockies before.  Watching someone do 70 mph down a mountain during a snowstorm is both an amazing and terrifying thing.

We haven't had more than a dusting all winter and that is just fine by me. I live on top of steep hill and it is a fucking pain in the ass to get to and from work (or anywhere else) when it snows.

Where? We've had very little snow this winter.

We have snow on the Santa Cruz Mountains, even, pretty rare that I see snow in the distance on my commute, maybe once or twice a year.

Last time I was in a snow storm in Scotland, we wouldn't have been able to find our car if it hadn't been parked in front of my in laws house.  On the street in Glasgow would have been impossible.  Gordon's parent's lived in Dunoon, on the hillside, so it was extra special fun.  Actually, it was sort of fun.   awesome, for real

We've had almost no snow as well--anything south of NYC has been pretty clear. Cold though.

We're supposed to get more snow around here sometime within the next day or so.  Yay.  Of course news media is all about STORM TRACK 2013!!! or something, like it's the end of the world. Meh.

I had the pleasure of trying to talk to someone on the phone today.  With no voice.  Guy later told me over IMs that he'd initially thought someone was making an obscene phone call.  Heartbreak  Luckily, I've managed to either use IMs or whisper-talk to co-workers today.  After they laugh at me first, of course.  Cry

Two keys to learning to drive in the snow IMO:  1) properly gearing down to slow your vehicle instead of braking (even in automatics); 2) knowing how to turn into a skid to stop it.

Sounds like the tools I use: rm, mv, cp....

We might have moved on from this already, but I did know about the Powershell execution thing.  It was actually already set on my work laptop, so that was fine, and I imagine that our workstation devs use it in some way.  Anyway, just a google of how to run a .ps1 script was enough to put me off the idea due to the number of things I would have to fiddle with.  I suppose if I had been using VBS or something else horrid to auto-manage a graphical OS then I'd be all over Powershell.  Now, it's too much work.  Hell, I stopped working with Perl due to the whole module-version-binary-compat-suckit jungle.  It's all thirty-year-old tools for me, now. Ohhhhh, I see.

I just did an apt-get purge pulse*  or some shit on my home box and wiped out about 1/3 of my htpc.  Not my brightest moment, definitely the most unstable thing about me using Linux is me.  On an up note I just ran across a post about using git to version my etc folder.

On the one hand, I want to say that Ingmar just won F13.

Well, I changed a single field on about 2050 entries in our test tracking tool.  So, if anyone wants to pull charts on those, well, the numbers might look a bit funny.  Luckily we had just completed a cycle and that information is purely for record keeping/audit purposes now.  I was meaning to only change 10, but hadn't realized every single entry was selected since the view was of 10.

"Why is this taking so long?"  ACK!  Facepalm

I can mostly eyeball the entries and reclassify them.  A few hours of extra work and it'll be about 90-95% correct.

Years ago, I accidentally `rm -r /var` on a production system.  I restored it from backup.  Some people noticed but weren't sure what they were looking at.  Unfortunately, the best way to avoid these mistakes is to have made them in the past.

The second day I owned my very first PC that was all my own (A 486DX2)  I was messing with functions in DOS, trying to teach myself things greater than Win 3.1.   I learned that typing "Unlink c:" is a very bad thing.   "Directory structure? Nahhhhh you didn't need that."

I also learned very quiclky how to restore from the provided backup disks.

I once attended an hour long, mandatory meeting based on what is, and is not, proper things to mount to the /tmp directory.

Because someone had mounted the user partition to /tmp (for reasons that apparently made sense to him) and had sorta forgotten to unmount it, then got on a plane for Russia. Somewhere over the Atlantic, a script executed that cleaned out the /tmp directory.

Recursively.

It took...some time...to restore all the data. Thankfully, nightly backups.

I'm in the same mindset.  He poked at the same things Gervaise did but in a much more trollish fashion. I said to my wife that he was going to get absolutely reamed in the morning because while his humor appeals to folks of a certain mindset and those under 38ish, that's not the Oscar demographic.  Turns out I was right.

I'm wholly amused that the Chris Brown/ Rhianna joke was seen as the most offensive.  No, Hollywood's insistence that we just need to put it behind us instead and accept Chris is the offensive part.  The man should be blacklisted as should anyone who beats someone so much they put them in the hospital. Instead it's, 'we just don't understand,' and, 'she's made her choice, just accept it." Fuck those people.

That went on way too long, Shat is old, and the hostard can't sing as well as he thinks he can. Also, he's not very funny.

The back and forth certainly went on too long.  They could have dropped at least one of those between-headlines scenes.  His voice isn't terrible but yeah, McFarlane certainly comes off as thinking he's Sinatra since he takes every opportunity he can to sing something.

I disagree on the funny.  It's an unapologetic, "fuck you, I'm a white male and not ashamed" stance.  The biggest problem I have with him is he does get misogynistic pretty often.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.
