Chrome allows you to simply type a search into the address bar.  I haven't used Firefox in ages, so don't know what they do.

Firefox has a crappy implementation of this, basically works the same way as Chrome but if you only type 1 word it thinks it is an internet address.

Not in my installation of Firefox (13.0.1) it doesn't. It searches on anything that isn't formatted like a URL. It also has autocomplete for recently visited or bookmarked sites.

Glad they fixed that, I'm stuck on the 10.0.5 linux version (which still doesn't do single word searches via the address bar) at work and mostly use Chrome at home.

I really like Chrome, but am a bit worried about Google's corporate spying practices.

People still go to Google's search page?   I stopped once I got the search bar up on the right corner of my firefox window.

People still type into the search bar? I stopped when modern browsers allowed you to search from the address bar.

I have too large and varied a page history. When I do this I get autocompleted to incorrect places more often than the search I actually want, ergo I continue to use the search bar.

I still connect to bulletin boards using my 28k modem to get my URL, just as our Founding Fathers did.
28k!?!

In my day we had 300 baud and liked it.  Damn Commie pussy.

I don't mind change, I mind change that adds an extra step solely so search providers can serve me more ads and force me to go through their site.

Yes, because "Microsoft", down arrow, enter is hard.

What you are missing is that in Chrome the most popular (and your recent) url completions & search strings appear in a drop down as you are typing.  For example, having never gone to www.microsoft.com on this PC I only have to get to "Micros" before the top result is the appropriate url.  If I had been willing to down arrow a little more I would have had it at Micr.

Also, it corrects for typos saving you even more hassle.

For the last 15+ years I have been able to have a canonical name autocomplete to www.***.com by just typing in the important middle part without the browser ever needing to send that to a search engine. Why do we suddenly, now that google makes a browser, have that option taken away?

Well to be fair...you really shouldn't have had your thumb there to begin with.  That's like Drill 101.

Drafting errors there.  I was going for fairly reasonable then went to reasonably rational and by the time I'd finished it pretty much shows my confusion and consternation over anything in the northern hemisphere with a vagina and an attitude, so I'm going to let it stand.

I would expect nothing less.  You've pretty much demonstrated that in The Baby-Eating Bishop of Bath and Wells Vs Ironwood, you'd think the Bishop actually had some quite valid opinions and that maybe I should just pipe down and leave him to it.

Women win because they know you care if they leave.

When you stop caring and turn their tactics around on them, you win a lot more.  You just have to be ok with everyone thinking you're a bastard.

I thought it was tough to tell the female Scots from the male, what with the beards and all.  Also, it's Scotland, where miserable is part of the DNA.  Unless you love cold, cold rain, I suppose.

No, those are dwarves, although in today's cliched D&D worlds, apparently that equates to Scottish.  Cliched stereotypes are cliched.

Isn't the Baby-Eating Bishop of Bath and Wells from a Blackadder episode?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_(Blackadder)    Not sure if it was in a book or not though.

Such vagaries are not limited to the northern hemisphere.
