I decided it'd probably be best to go to emergency and get it looked at. The doctor comes in, looks at it and goes 'I can't help you' and summons a nurse.

That sounds like it is for the best.

Why it pays to read the department invoices you're submitting for payment - charges for some other department were added to our invoice in January and February. I missed it on the January bill (and because the dept. admin actually checked and okays the invoices for payment) and caught it on this month's bill. No idea why this happened, other than maybe Hinckley Springs thinking "oh hey, different department, same company, who cares, right?" At least it's just for our breakroom, so it's not a large amount of money.

I cut the end of my thumb off (so it was flat at the end of the nail) when cutting limes for cocktails about 15 years ago. Now I can't even tell it ever happened. Luckily I had already been at the hootch enough that I just slapped a bandage on it and forgot about it until the next day.

10 things your orthodontist won't tell you.If you have a kid that's about to get into braces, this is a great list, particularly article #1. And general dentists almost always charge the same or more than orthodontists and they typically have absolutely no training in the matter.

Probably so. It really depends on where you live, though.
Another thing that the article doesn't tell you is that many times the expensive people are expensive for a reason. You don't want the cheapest guy in town putting braces on your kid.

I'm in the middle of labor negotiations and my kid is probably going to need braces.
I feel like I am in Last Exit to Springfield.

"Sorry, Mr. Burns, but I don't go in for these backdoor shenanigans. Sure, I'm flattered, maybe even a little curious, but the answer is no." Edit: That episode is amazingly quotable. Braces aren't something you have to do tomorrow. Truth be told, the profession probably treats kids too early when you look at the research. The old way of thinking with orthodontic treatment was that you had to treat early to be able to modify patients' growth. After some research at UNC and Florida has shown that our ability to manipulate jaw growth is extremely limited you have to question whether it is better to wait until you know exactly what you are dealing with. It has also been shown that doing early braces, i.e. before all the adult teeth are in at age 7-9, is not beneficial at all in most cases, and that kids actually are in braces much longer and it is much more expensive for the parents to do it that way. So you're probably fine to wait a year.

My orthodontist wouldn't recommend braces for anyone under the age of 15, and that was in 1990. His explanation was the palette wasn't finished hardening and so those parents who insisted on them at 12 or so were only lining his pocket because all the work would be undone as things changed in the mouth.
He also made it quite clear that while he would try to leave room for them, once wisdom teeth showed-up everything could be fucked-up anyway.

He was somewhat right about #1- in people that have fairly normal skeletal development (which most do) it wouldn't really matter that much. And the palate fuses at about puberty, so that's about age 12 in boys and 11 in girls. Point #2 has been proven to be wrong in research done on the subject. Wisdom teeth have absolutely nothing to do with future crowding. We've taken out millions of wisdom teeth in the name of "stability" and it just doesn't make a bit of difference. People that don't ever have any wisdom teeth develop are just as likely to get post-orthodontic relapse as those that have them, and folks that have them out are just as likely to get post orthodontic relapse. So it's an old wives tale.

Also, apparently and completely coincidentally now that the AV program that came on my computer needs to be renewed, I have something on my computer that's sending out random links to my ISP email list. Actually, I'm not even sure why the particular emails were chosen as I've never emailed some of those folks on this computer (new in November 2010) and it's a very small list - my new work email, my husband's home and work email, and 3 friends from my last job, none of whom I've spoken with since 2009. It sent out an email yesterday and I couldn't get to fixing it last night and now another showed up this AM to the same group of folks, different link this time. Here's hoping I can clean it out easily.
*sigh* Cleaned off the random whatever that appeared when I ran Malwarebytes, had a few days of nothing and then got to work this morning to find another random link sent out from my ISP email account. I wasn't even on the computer last night, so I have no idea what is causing this. I'll run Malwarebytes again and see what it finds, but I can't figure out what is causing this. It's really annoying me how coincidental the timing of this happening is though.

Most agree that to keep teeth in place, patients should wear their retainers regularly almost all the time for the first two to six months after the braces come off, then every night for the rest of their lives.

While I wore my top retainer every night up til I was partway through college, I haven't worn it in years, and my top teeth are still in place. I've still got my rear wire retainer on my bottom teeth, for what's been probably 14 years now. I've been advised to keep it in for the rest of my life if it's at all possible. I have to be really cautious when I chew taffy, but that's the only issue it ever causes.

Don't get me fucking started on Orthos. Fucking teeth chiseling sadistic cocksuckers. I got braces in my teens and it was some of the worst fucking pain I've ever experienced. Two or three years of monthly tightenings that caused me severe headaches and tooth pain, another year and a half of a retainer and my teeth still aren't "straight." They aren't ZOMG BUCKTOOTH bad, but for the money my mom shelled out and the goddamn pain I was put through, I ought to be able to level an art hanging on them bitches. Fuck orthos in the goddamn eyeholes.
