I left at noon to make pies.  awesome, for real

Mmm pie.

I'm gonna to make bread pudding for the first time this Thanksgiving.  I don't know if I'll be able to win over my family with it or not.

Given my previous attempts, they will probably just get pissed at you and ask where the pies are. Thanksgiving is one of those holidays I've learned not to fuck with the classics. Christmas is the place for the test runs.

In other news Scarlett Johansson finally admits nude pics were actually of her and meant for husband Ryan Reynolds.

Hehe, my family is weird with desserts.  It usually is comprised of some Filipino items my grandmother makes, but she's with some family down in Texas this Thanksgiving.  I usually make pecan pies, but I decided since we aren't having a full family T-day to mix it up a bit.

It's a risk though, I admit.  I don't think most of my family has even tried bread pudding before.

GF donated to a charity that then handed her over a chocolate bourbon pecan pie. Move the fuck over, pumpkin and apple, there's a new boss in Pie Town.

My wife tried one of those a few years ago and is now threatened with bodily harm should she not arrive with one every year. Man they are good.

I'm considering making some spiced pumpkin whiskey for the holidays this year.  So far what I've planned is to put the pumpkin in the oven at 400 degrees for about an hour with honey and cinnamon and possibly some allspice on it.  Then I'll put into a jar with bourbon in it for about 2 weeks.

Has anyone done anything like this before?  Any suggestions?   awesome, for real

I posted a recipe for a similar spiced rum and apple mixture I do every year for the holidays in this thread earlier. We add the rum to warm apple cider and top with whipped cream.

I would caution you about cooking the pumpkin. If you do the pumpkin will get soft and mushy, as it naturally does when cooked. When you add it to the bourbon it will end up breaking down and you will end up with spiced bourbon/pumpkin mush or sauce.

Keep the pumpkin raw and make sure any spices you add are in their big whole form. Dont add any ground or "powdered" spices to the mix, ie use entire cinnamon sticks or whole allspice berries. Using big whole spices makes it easier to ladle the alcohol out when you are ready to drink it.

As long as you keep it in a sealed glass container it will keep for a year or more.

In years past I've brought four or five pies to Thanksgiving with my family; this year they hinted that I should scale it back a bit, so I'm doing only two -- one fairly ordinary cranberry-walnut, and one layered pie with cheesecake, pumpkin, and pecan.   And bourbon whipped cream.  Now I'm debating adding bourbon and chocolate to the pecan layer of that one pie just to make it REALLY over the top... should be an easy tweak.

Work was amusing this year, all the low people on the totem pole took off and all the big bosses were around.  I still managed to be productive and snuck out at 3:40... which considering I normally leave at 4... isn't that impressive.

I went to the gluten free bakery to get some rolls for thanksgiving. Apparently everyone else did too.

I ended up getting their last piece of pizza and a slice of carrotcake as their entire break rack was empty.

So one of the "only closes one day a year and it is not Thanksgiving" stores here is having a Thursday only sale and has Xbox 360 + Kinect bundles for 199.

My "newest" console is an N64 which I bought about the time the gamecube was released.

Trying to decide if it is worth it.

Ya, I must admit it doesn't look impressive, but it smells pretty amazing. I'll let you know how it is. It was apparently made by a pro chef.

/delurks from the infamous Useless Conversation thread

Thought I would share my Turkey Day plan.

We'll be having dinner at my wife's younger's sister's two bedroom condo, and be joined by my wife's older sister's family.

The families by the numbers:

For myself: There's me, the wife and our 13-month old

Younger sister-in-law: Her, her boyfriend, and three kids (4yr, 3yr, and 2 wks)

Older sister-in-law: Her, her husband, and five kids (6yr, 5yr, 4yr, 2yr, and 11 months)

Needless to say, I'll be bringing my bottle of Sailor Jerry with me.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

This time of year you guys always make me feel a little envious that I've got no big cooking/eating holidays until Christmas. On the up side last week I made my mincemeat for mince pies with real beef! I tried a batch with the mixture and it's actually really nice, nowhere near as sweet as regular mince pies so the flavour of the fruit is far more distinct and the Calvados I used in it comes through really well as a background flavour. All I need now is to perfect the dough I used (need to roll it a bit thinner, bit less flour and slightly less time in the over. I used a sweet shortcrust recipe and the pies came out pretty damn solid) and I'll have a pretty awesome treat to serve with brandy butter and/or brandy cream.

And Brandy (and possibly whisky).

We're going out because our plans were blown to hell when my new stove went from Nov 18 delivery to Dec 10. Dammit. The range I have now is the worst I've ever seen and I've been stuck with it for 4 Thanksgivings now. We're moving from this:

I find it funny the only place I can find a pic of the stove that came with my house is 'ezcreditwarehouse'  Ohhhhh, I see.

Hmm I'm not sure what is more sad. Last year's Thanksgiving where I spent it at work eating off a Styrofoam plate or this year where I fixed a small dinner for just myself.

Oohh Sky nice stove!
Speaking of kitchen appliances we are giving ourselves a new dishwasher for Christmas. Bestbuy has a Frigidaire and a Samsung on sale starting tomorrow. Reviews online for both models are half five star and half one star reviews, so one extreme or the other.
Anyone have any opinions, thoughts, or experience with either model or with buying a new dishwasher?

Having owned a Samsung microwave I'd say don't go that route.  Limited repair options and it died after 4 years.  I've never had problems with the Frigidaire stuff I've owned, but it's never been a dishwasher just refrigerators & washer/ dryers.

GE & Whirlpool are the best dishwashers I've been around.  Particularly if you're looking at the tall-tub like is shown in the Best Buy flyer.

No stealing my stoven word! I bought it over a month ago. Back ordered, yada. At this point, it gives me time to straighten out the contractor situation. Also looks like we're going otr microwave rather than a hood.

Sand, reviews online are almost totally useless. Check out consumer reports (at the library!) for starters. We bought a stainless ext/int Kenmore Elite a couple years back for around $700 and it's a champ.

The husband and I went to a local restaurant for dinner, since making a fancy dinner for 2 is a bit lame and the place we went to is fantastic.

I did a somewhat small dinner since it was just my roommate and me but it turned out well. Ribs were amazing even though I was too lazy to fire up the grill.
