Not sure I'm following you, but again, I am shockingly uninformed about this sort of thing. Getting ordinary MP3 files onto an iPhone isn't hard at all...I just don't know how to turn any of them into ringtones.

I don't know anything about iPhones, but Sprint prevents you from just choosing any file. I doubt it's much different with most providers. Files have to be programmed through an uploader site like I mentioned above. Stop with the disinfo!!

Stray's right about most providers blocking it, my wife's Verizon phone, her previous Sprint Phone and my co-workers AT&T phone all have locks to keep you from using anything other than ringtones you've bought from the respective companies. Two phones ago I know my wife was able to go to sites other than Verizon and their asinine "Pay us $10 for 8 ringtones!" for her tones, but she says they don't work on this newest one.

Heh. A dollar. BFD. I've changed my ring tone about 3 times in total over my last 2 phones. The opening to "Less Talk More Rokk" works pretty well as a ring tone. Plus, it gets really loud so I can actually hear the damn thing. I tend to miss calls a lot even with a max volume ring tone and a vibrating phone.

Sprint doesn't prevent you from that. It depends on your phone. Any of the Winmo 5 and 6 phones let you pick any mp3. Just sayin. For example, any HTC for Sprint. Also, some of the Samsung flip phones (like the A900) let you pick any ringtone. HELL, going all the way back to the Neopoint, I could pick a .wav that I put on there, getting it on there was another story.

Yeah my Samsung plays Tank! (opening to Cowboy Bebop) when someone calls. If it comes up on my iPod rotation now I reach for my phone though.

Hey that's a good one. I have that soundtrack, I'll have to see if I can turn it into an MP3->Ringtone.

I kind of like my phone though (it's a very thin Samsung flip), even if it doesn't do that.

i guess.. umm.. find an episode file or something.. make a selection of the clip, and export the audio in a video editing app or something. fairly easy to copy and paste with quicktime pro for me (and then just converting the audio to mp3 through itunes), but qt pro costs you.

Yeah, no idea how to actually do that. I wasn't too serious, though I do of course have the source data if I was so inclined.

Whoah, I can't believe that you people have your phones locked down like that by your service providers. Mind you, the US has traditionally been light-years behind Japan and Europe on all things mobile-phone-related. Finland is our adventurous little brother that keeps coming round to say "guys, guys, look what you can do with these things now!"

Oh great. Thank you for putting Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick in my head. It'll be there for a week unless someone mentions Tom Sawyer.
Damn.
Haha sorry I love Ian Dury, one of the all-time great live performers. Not many people could sing Sweet Gene Vincent with plastic fried eggs on their shoulders and pull it off.

I think it has more to do with caution on the side of IP laws then anything even remotely resembling innovation.

I think it has more to do with caution on the side of IP laws then anything even remotely resembling innovation. Maybe that's one driver. But the phone providers and the network providers are only loosely connected in the UK, for instance: I use a blackberry, which is more limiting due to the particular demands it makes of the network, but I can still use it on two different providers if i decide to switch. My previous phone, a Nokia, I could use on four or five networks in the UK, and I had a choice whenever I entered a new country. My provider simply had no hooks at all into the phone firmware that would let them control my ringtone, or any other customisation feature.

Uh, there's several providers in the US that will sell you a blackberry, Verizon and AT&T come immediately to mind (edit: T-Mobile, Altel and Sprint are all also national Blackberry service providers in the US). I'm pretty sure it's just a SIM card change to switch between them.
I had a Motorola phone that was usable between more providers than I care to count, between local and national services it was easily into the 8 to 10 range. For example I used a provider that only covered south Florida, but it did it with unlimited calling and etc for 20 bucks a month.
That there are restrictions on ring-tones isn't indicative of the technology of the phones, or the phone networks.

Let me know if you find a Blackberry that allows for a "simple SIM card swap" between US CDMA and US GSM networks.

The ability of the phone to receive CDMA or GSM signals has nothing to do with the SIM card.
There are 3rd party sources that will unlock AT&T phones for 30 bucks.

The people above me just banged on the floor because I was playing music too loud. I hope their fucking baby never gets to sleep. Fuck them for having 5 people in an apartment, 2 of which don't work and 2 small children.
IT'S 1 FUCKING 30.

It wasn't loud enough to prompt the reaction I got in the mid-afternoon. It was most certainly the bass from my subwoofer that probably woke their baby. But frankly, if they're going to be living in an apartment complex with paperthin walls, I can't be asked to give a fuck when i hear every single footstep they take during all hours of the day. Their fucking children sound like little goddamn cheetahs in the late afternoon when they run across the floor. It's not like I'm over here smacking my ceiling with a broom.
Anyway, in short, fuck them. I hope they come down here and confront me. I'll lay into them.

Heh I was gonna post the same thing. On a related note why do shops all turn their heating up to 11 when it's wintry? Means that as soon as you walk into them from outside your specs steam up and you stumble blindly for 5 minutes! Schild - record their kids screaming one day and then play it back, very very loudly on a repeat loop while you're out of the apartment for a couple of hours

SIM cards are by definition GSM-only (the SIM card spec is part of the overall GSM spec). There is an equivalent card for CDMA phones called R-UIM but they aren't used in the US (yet). In the US Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM. There are "dual-mode" CDMA/GSM phones but they are rare. If you have an unlocked GSM phone you can switch between AT&T and T-Mobile by swapping SIM cards. To switch carriers on a CDMA phone in the US you would have to reprogram it.
