A few friends in Alameda have been talking about a new wireless provider they've got over there which uses a mesh network, which sounds pretty goddamn cool and I'd assume it's a little more resilient in the face of antennas being jostled out of position.

Common Networks' new offerings include unlimited broadband internet with upload and download speeds of above 50Mbps for $50 per month with no contract, added fees or hidden taxes. New subscribers in Alameda will receive six months free as part of an introductory offer.

That M is capitalized. Is it really 500mbps?

Edit: And after a tiny bit of research:

Quote
Our average customer speeds are 5x faster than DSL and 2x faster than cable. We use new wireless technology with a small antenna on your roof to deliver speeds over 75 mbps download & upload for a flat fee of $50 / month, no contract required.

That is terrible for $50.

Compared to Google Fiber everything is terrible.

I mean, yeah. I don't have Google Fiber, but I do have gigabit. I was getting faster than 75mbps from a T-Mobile cell phone when I moved in. That's how bad that is.

You think that's bad, a week ago I was paying $50/mo for ADSL with 2Mbps down (and less up).   awesome, for real  Wireless has been quite a game-changer.  I'll go fiber if it ever makes its way out to me -- you can get it in SF now but only if you're in a large apartment building where it's worth their while to run it to the building and sell to a whole bunch of tenants.

Some of us live in rural areas where the competition is either AT&T or Comcast.  I stick with AT&T solely because fuck Comcast.

I live 4 blocks from a fiber trunk :( No spurs on it.

They did install it to the library for free, though! We had been forced into a T1 by our system up to that point  Ohhhhh, I see. A fucking T1.

Did you check if AT&T has fiber in your area yet? They started SF fiber service a year ago.

I've lived in 8 different countries in the last 15 years. The most that I've ever paid for fast internet and bundled TV is about €45/mo. In some countries I got unlimited mobile data as well for a total of about €30/mo.

I have decent but occasionally weather-prone conventional broadband so I also have a Three Mobile sim for 26 pounds a month that gives me unlimited 4G mobile data and 30GB of tethered data a month.

Except that it doesn't recognise that my Huawei router isn't a phone so I've had almost a year so far of unlimited, high speed broadband via the router.

Ew att indeed. Though I do have ATT and have chewed through five TB this month. Which, rough back of the napkin math, would take you 82 years.

Rabbits got to my first lettuce harvest, but I was happy to see a partially-eaten rabbit corpse yesterday morning.

Seemed kind of appropriate, given I'm playing 7 Days to Die, having a corpse lying outside the front door. And then something absconded with it by lunch, so I kept chuckling because I couldn't shake the thought that it decayed with loot on it.

Someone in our NYC office just literally emailed us "can you confirm this info as soon as possible, that would be great" and it's taking every fucking ounce of my willpower to not reply with a meme. As it stands, I put my foot down and I'm not answering that email.

Something that vague sounds like a phishing/ malware attack someone opened. I'd report it to him and his manager to be sure he's not infecting the office.

Bought another pair of glasses, just because I like having a couple of sets of backups.  That weird ultra-clear tunnel vision effect that you get from a new set of glasses is seriously fucking with me this time.

I did already get a Global Entry card, but little chance of a tan.

Mostly I want to know if I can spend euros in all these places or do I have to get some koruna for Prague.

EDIT: Going to drop by Auschwitz as well.

I got looks from Germans when trying to use my card to buy things less than 5 euro.  Then again, Germans looks were easy to gather.

That's true in the US too. Some places even ban credit card purchases under $10*.
