I live in a crappy place for light pollution, I've learned to bite my tongue when the fiancee gushes about how beautiful the stars are or how clear the sky...she apparently has no concept of true night, having spent her entire life in cities.
I used to love looking through my grandfather's crappy telescope (and his good binos, shhh) from our camp up in the Adirondacks. The night sky when there are no lights at all for tens of miles (minimum) is an amazing sight.

That said, I did get decent pics of the supermoon from my backyard with my camera last year (which you've seen, apoc): http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=10495.msg1385776#msg1385776 Took a couple hundred shots to get a decent one, amazing how fast the moon moves at that magnification.

I grew up in Suffolk in the UK, which back in the 70s was an almost entirely rural area and had very little light pollution. Moving to a city when I was about 14 I noticed two main things: a) where had all the stars gone and b) there were no black people in rural Britain.

There's actually a small observatory about 10 miles from me now, up on some moors, so as soon a we get a decent clear night at a weekend I'm going to pop up there and join the stargazing club thing.

Finally snowing and cold in Pittsburgh. Amazing it is almost mid-January and we are just now getting snow here. Been here since 2007 and can't really remember not getting any snow this late.

First day is always amazing. Day 2-90 is just shit.

I love to watch it snow. When I don't have to be anywhere. After a day or two the magic is gone (although it is a good reason to work from home until thaw).

It "snowed" about 1/4" here last night but now it is mega windy and in the teens so it feels like the surface of Hoth.

Yeah that is next from what I hear. In fact, it is supposed to be like that around PM rush hour. Waiting for the bus should be fun.

The temperature is still all over the place here. It was in the 60s this weekend, back to near freezing yesterday and today. Haven't had any snow yet.

Oh it's supposed to be almost 50 and raining here on Friday, then back to highs in the teens on Monday. I just want consistency!

Hardly can call it snow here. We had a wet inch or two last week, and it's 'supposed' to storm tonight (12-18")...

For once probably ever I'm happy. Still can't go full bore on my left foot, but was able to get at least some wood in the garage last night with the nice frozen ground (normally I'm taking mud prevention steps). So it was good to have the respite, but a week of snow would be fine by me right now, I'm short-term stocked. Then I'll need to snowblow a path out for the next set of wheelbarrow loads...

Well since Obama mentioned it in the State of the Union, I'd say this is cancer's way of saying, "wait just a damn minute Mr. President."

Thanks Obama.  why so serious?

Phone interview tomorrow for a fellowship I'd really like to get. Feel like I'm getting unpracticed with this kind of "who knows what they'll ask" interview--last five years, I've mostly been the guy on the other side of table. Good for the soul to have tables turned, but also unsettling.

We've got 5cm of snow, temps hovering around 0 all week. I did get a really good look at Jupiter a few days ago though, before the snow clouds settled in. Being able to actually make out bands of colour and clearly see 3 moons was kind of awesome.

Took me a couple of minutes.  Thankfully, none of the morning people are in the office yet to find me alone, laughing like a loon.

So, I'm at my old house for a couple days to get some things (like dishes and the 17year old cat) and the weather decides to be -5F this morning, with a wind chill of -30F.

Trying to load the car is teh suck.

Fear not, you'll come 'round to it. I suspect you're just knocking on the wrong doors.

Everquest 1 f2p awesome, for real

After 14 years or so I am back in Norrath.  The only content I am bothering with is release and some Kunark, and surprise this nostalgia trip has been fun.   I give it a month tops,   But I am having fun.   It is amazing how having zero expectations or concerns for phat loot can change ones gaming experience.
