I think it is closer to no fucks being given, but that a decent approximation.

Work addiction?  How is that even possible?

It's not an addiction but I still feel a mysterious urge to get to work ASAP in the morning.  I'm trying to fight it, especially since my wife is angry that I'm not magically more romantic now that I have nothing to do all day.  Or so she says.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

There's a pull the higher up you go in a company to be available, because everyone else is available. You have to fight it at times, but balance it with the fact that you're paid well to be there.

I have a theory that work-a-holics are that way because they don't want to go home.

Some people also measure themselves exclusively by their success at the office.

That's because when they get home, they're no longer in charge!  why so serious?

The people I've known that were work-a-holics were mostly self-involved. They worked constantly because only their stuff mattered, they didn't know how to delegate, and didn't trust anyone.

As a result, they are tough to deal with on a personal level because they can't unplug or relax. They constantly have to be doing something or they feel behind. It's most ego and fear based.

I can't think of a single thing that I wouldn't get tired of in time, especially if it was my job.

I've been looking forward to retirement since I got my first job.  The transition into shiftless layabout will be an easy one for me.  I can envision the discussions/disagreement when I reach retirement.

Work becoming a hobby is fine. You're getting paid to do something you love. For the average person, that is not even remotely the case.

There are two kinds of working people; those that live to work and those that work to live.

That being said, I don't know a single person that was on their death bed wishing that they had spent more time working.

Depends on the job, though. I get to help people and really make a difference in people's lives on a daily basis, which is awesome and I love it. On the other hand, fucking computers.

I'm always ready to come back to work after a vacation and I enjoy it, but I'll happily retire ASAP.

That said...pretty much everyone who retires here comes back as a part-timer or volunteer until they die.

I used to do a lot of hobby coding projects before I became a full time developer.  Now I have no desire whatsoever to spend my free time coding.  I actually resisted moving into development for years because I was afraid that'd be the case.  Luckily I have no shortage of alternate hobbies and most of them don't involve sitting at a desk for hours at a stretch, so it's not all bad.

No one will pay me to read, play video games, and jerk off?

edit to be more serious:

I get my hobbies now, but it's a reduced number and at a reduced clip (make your wanking joke below). I have enough interests that once I'm retired they will easily consume my life as easy as work does.

This. If I won the lottery or some long lost relative left me a few million, I might stick around for a couple of weeks to get my replacement up to speed, but only because I like some of the people I work with and it would a gargantuan pain in the ass for them if I suddenly disappeared. But if I live to retirement age (which will be about 106 probably), I will just flat fucking disappear as soon as I can file my papers.

I'm different.  I'd still consult and do projects that I chose, but I think I'd get hugely bored if going cold turkey.  Also, divorce would probably happen.

I get bored so easily.

So, yeah, my brother's getting a CT scan tomorrow. He finally got a chest X-ray, and there's a mass. And if you can see it on an X-ray, it's not a tiny one. There's lots of things that cause that that DON'T start with "c".

I keep telling myself that, at least. On the bright side, family history is on our side. Plus, he spent the years between 12 and 30 getting bronchitis at least twice a year, and generally pneumonia as well. So an infection, a thingy form around an infection new or old (I don't know what they're called, a relative of my wife's had one removed). Lots of stuff.

So I'm hoping he's just got screwed up lungs from years of chest infections. He's been wheezing and full of sinus drainage for three months now, so....I dunno.

I guess I'll find out in a week or so.
