The assholes who write some of these fucking ads need to be beaten to death. Also, assholes who write browsers wherein scripts can block closing the goddamn browser need to be beaten.

If I manage to get re-directed to a fucking ad page, the ad should NOT be able to block me closing the fucking window entirely. I shouldn't have to use the task manager to kill your stupid fucking web browser.

A mindless parade of petty annoyances, actually. Starting with work and ending with my teenager getting to learn how to file an insurance claim. All the venting I didn't do at him (he's 18. He was GONNA get into an accident that was his fault sooner or later. So I'm just using this as a learning experience so he gets to figure out how insurance companies and such work) has just kinda flared over. Having to basically kill the entire browser process and dig into the history (session restore would just dig back up the stupid ad) to get back to the work I was doing was just a pointless pain in my ass over some idiot's fake PC security scam.

At least the work stuff's not my fault, even if I'm stuck on point. I hate being the visible person for someone else's screwups. Everyone knows it's not my fault, but I'm still the face of it.

At least I learned a nifty new computational geometry algorithm which is cool. (Well I say "new" but mean "new to me, just cool". It's been around for like 50 years and is probably the first thing anyone learns. I've just never had any need to do anything like it, so it's cool to me.).

On the bright side, Game Dev Tycoon is pretty fun. :)

I loved Game Dev Tycoon. It's easy to game once you know the formulas, but playing it to be the best best bestest MMO EVAR? That's still fun.

Yes. I thought I was before. Apparently I had never installed it when I got a new PC.

So, you know, some self-aimed irritation there too. :)

My sensei was just complaining last night about his laptop being overwhelmed by ads/popups. I'm hoping I don't end up being the one who has to help him fix it, I really don't want to know what he's been browsing.

Give him a flash drive with spybot, malwarebytes, ad-block plus, and MSSE or other preferred free anti-virus and let him deal with the rest.

To be fair, I'm not sure there's an airline that is anything but "punch you in the dick and charge you for it" if you're not first class.

They ALL suck.

Wherein I open myself to mockery...

I had a major shift in my social life, and have to start from scratch. I opened up a Tinder and am tossing myself into other online dating sites. I want new people in my life. I want SOMETHING to happen. I don't mean taking stupid risks.

In the back of my head, I feel like a masochist for putting myself out there like this, but I don't know what choice I have in Los Angeles. I'm in this perfect spot where I'm too old to do anything with college students and people at my age are busy with work / SO's / their circle of close friends.

You give up and find a hobby that keeps you at home and alone until you decide 30-something women just off their first divorce with 1-3 kids are a reasonable choice.

That or join a gym, beef up and deal with that whole scene.

 why so serious?

I'd go with hobby.

You might try one of those 'events and adventures' kinda things. I don't know if they're age-segregated (so you might end up with all the college kids), but there's some places that routinely do singles events but change up the venue and concept. Might be rock-climbing or biking one time, a mixer at a museum next time.

You can basically show up at the ones that interest you, and at least know that everyone there is single AND interested in the same stuff.

Do they have dance classes for high-anxiety introverts who are uncomfortable with physical contact?

I am not that bad but thinking about dancing with partners brings up some bad memories. I go stiff.

Lol, almost pun. Depends on the partner.

I'll look into the hobby stuff.

Do dances that don't require partners.  Like Billy Idol did.  Pretty soon everyone in the room was dancing with themselves, too.

Like this.

A lot of people I know who do partner dancing are fairly introverted in real life, including me.  Much like games, dancing creates a sort of structure that makes it okay to be around other people without having to constantly produce the polite chitchat that introverts find so tiring.

If you're sufficiently introverted that you don't like being near women then I think any attempt to meet women is probably doomed.   awesome, for real

Could try a hip-hop or break dancing class.  No contact required and it's good for confidence knowing that you have some moves if you ever find yourself in the middle of a circle at a wedding or something like that.

Sudden shifts in social networks are rough at any age past university often. Hobbies is good advice, finding groups doing activities you're into is a good way to find people you'll have a good reason to spend time with and have something to talk about. My experience with this has largely been moving to different countries where there's a slightly different situation. There tend to be institutions or organisations to facilitate meeting new people but similar things can be in your local area. I know Somethingawful has goon meet ups (that I can confirm are full of exactly the sort of people you would expect at internet peoples type meet ups). Check facebook for groups that are into things you are in your local area.

I've also found tinder a reasonable way of meeting people, especially if you're comfortable with the thought that you might not have chemistry with someone and won't sleep with them but are still willing to talk. I've actually found due to not being great at starting conversations with people I don't know at bars I've now got more female friends than male friends. It's also kind of more embarassing to admit you met a friend on tinder than someone you're going out with.

It's actually pretty good for firming up muscles. You won't bulk out, but holding some of those poses.....

Basically it won't add anything, but it'll tone up what you have. (That's regular yoga. That aerobic shit looks insane. That'll lose you weight too, I suspect. Also you might die.)

I did Yoga once. My friends hadn't told the instructor I'd never done it before so she launched right into everything and I tried to keep up. It's not as easy as it looks (and I don't think it looks that easy).

Yoga classes did give rise to yoga pants.

As someone who works at a major college campus, I thank you, yoga class.  why so serious?

That's certainly true if you don't at least try.

What's the worst that could happen - they say no? They say no while being a jerk about it?

More to the point - I had almost forgotten about yoga pants when I left my previous posting. While they are certainly nice, I feel like they could stand to indicate some kind of weight limit on the label...though I guess we've always had the same problem with spandex. Ohhhhh, I see.

The typical woman I've met under 25 is obnoxious though. Seriously, I've dated many of them in my 30s and eventually I just find them exhausting and I move on to women with some substance.

There are obviously exceptions out in the world, but man. You're better off finding a woman who has at least had a job and understands how the world works.
