Effective November 1, 2006, the SCI FI Channel will change their name to SurgeTV, to reflect the changing demographic thrust of the successful long-running cable channel. In addition, deals are currently working out to bring back ECW for a three-times a week run in prime time, as well as reruns (Pre-WWE) of professional wrestling events.

it's dead to me.

Edit: update here indicating this was a hoax.

It was dead to me years ago.. this just makes it official.  But then I knew it was going to die when 1) they dumped all of the sci-fi shows 2) the (then) new president of the network said something about how sci-fi was too niche* and 3) they started dropping good, original sci-fi shows wih decent ratings.

Expect BSG to not have a season 3, and I'll be surprised if season 2 even finishes.

Another quote

Quote
While much of the original programming the SCI FI Channel has produced will remain on air through the next year, SurgeTV expects sweeping changes to the network, shifting away from the so-called "nerd" demographic. This means that SurgeTV will try to appeal to it's growing number of "extreme" viewers by removing all of it's current re-run programming and replacing it with a new "brand" - Xtreme Surge At Night. Effective November 1, 2006, SurgeTV will begin broadcasting reruns of Hogan Knows Best and original WWE programming. Filling out the early morning hours will be the ground-breaking American (English language channel) debut of Lucha Libre sporting events.

So its supposed to turn into SpikeTV v2.0? Thank god. I was just thinking the other day we need more shows on TV dedicated to large sweaty men in speedos rolling around on each other.

What... the... fuck?

Why not just turn the goddamn thing into the Mountain Dew channel? Fuck me, I thought SpikeTV was a stupid idea, this sounds like the retarded brainchild of hydroencheplitic snowboarders and 90-year old marketing corpses. But I guess it puts some sense into their cancellation of SG-1. I expect that neither BSG or Doctor Who will continue past 2007.

Fuckers.

Dr. Who? The Brits will hopefully carry it on their own if needed. We are talking about BBC people here that grew up with that series.

But else I agree. Scifi Wrestling channel? In what demented mind those two things go hand in hand?

Shit, I missed that.  Wow, that... I really don't get it.  They've done work to change out some of the cast, and it looks like they've pulled it off.  There has been a drop in ratings lately, but I take that to have more to do with SciFi's screwing of the Friday schedule, and otherwise the Friday lineup is the moneymaker for that channel.  Everything looks good, so lets change it?

Bonnie Hammer's  you know, the woman who brought the USA network to such stunning heights as it's at today.  Oh wait she did that using wrestling, too.

But hey.. those guys with their online petition finally got some changes, didn't they. Too bad it wasn't the 'right' direction. Oops!

Out of interest, now that the market is vacant, is the name "Sci-Fi Channel" freely available, or would I have to buy that?

Sure, the BBC will keep producing it, as Sci-Fi had nothing to do with that. But Sci-Fi was the only one willing to broadcast it over here, which means I'd have to torrent the goddamn thing.

I repeat, fuckers.

This is bad that I have to hope NBC somehow decides to take over BSG.  This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard happen to a station.

Season 2 did finish.  Season 3 should happen no matter what the fallout from this monumental pooch screw.  I mean.. it looks like they've got a decent chunk of it filmed.  This just fills me with rage.  BSG getting an early axe would be worse than anything HBO's ever done or even Fox for killing Firefly and Wonderfalls.

Glad to see my BS detector still functions properly. Too bad SG-1 is still cancelled, though. Teal'c needs to be written into Atlantis STAT.

BSG is the best fucking show on TV right now.

The only redeeming value of SG-1 is Claudia Black and Lexa Doig.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

The worst part about it being a hoax is that is was believable. Sci-Fi has done some dumbass things recently, putting ECW on being one of those. It wouldn't have surprised me a bit had it been true.

I was about to post something similar.  Yeah, they got me but only because it was plausible in some way.  It doesn't speak well of your company/ agency/ channel when most of your target customers think that ill of you.

Yep. I have a fairly good bullshit meter and it didn't set it off in the slightest. If I thought it was fake I would have never made a thread about it.

I was taken in.

Mostly because I've browsed through the joke that Scifi calls it's daytime lineup.  They play some pure shit series back to back to back all day.  Do they still do 5 episodes back to back of "cheap but bad/outdated cancelled TV series" during the afternoon/evening?

Not to mention the piles of straight to DVD movies....

Yes, though in their defense, there really is a lack of decent sci-fi out there, if what you want to do is fill a cable channel with it.

It doesn't need to be decent.  Just sci-fi.

There, now it's easier for them :P

I kind of liked when they used to play alot of the classic old horror movies.  The Christopher Lee Hammer movies and whatnot.  Sure, it was silly....   but it was much better than 6 hours of Sliders or the 9th repeat of SG-1.

I really hoped that Scifi would have picked up Dead Like Me.  Didn't seem to be much in the way of effects budget,  and locale was standard city.  The language would have to be toned down (they loved to say "fuck")....  but the series seemed to be picking up plot/story steam at the end of season 2.

True, but that still doesn't explain how they can foist both wrestling and Shannen Doherty on us.

I keep forgetting the channel exists.  They always have it in a really weird place in our channel listings.  I think I only really watched Stargate on it which I stopped watching after the frowny bloke grew hair.  I have no idea why that bothered me so much.  Anyway, I saw an advert that they have a new show named "Eureka"... is it good?  I meant to check it out, but I forgot.

They implied that the current viewers of Sci-Fi wanted wrestling.  To me, I figured something was up since I know of no Sci-Fi fan that is a big pro wrestling fan.  They certainly wouldn't prefer just dropping all Sci-Fi for all Pro Wrestling.  That smelled funny.

I didn't think it was a hoax though.  I just figured there was some shenanigans going on in the board room is all.  Being a hoax is even better.

Can I just jump in and start watching?  Or are the episodes dependant on each other making it hard to follow if you haven't been watching?  Sci Fi channel does a lot of "marathons" though, don't they?

I think you could probably jump right in, as the episodes are mostly self-contained. There is an overarching plot(s), but you've only missed about 5 shows and they are in the background right now. Just torrent the others or try to catch a rerun.
