I'm still surprised they're cancelling SG-1 after starting out the cast swap. Their biggest problem was that the show was getting too expensive to produce -- which had to be mainly salary based, since Atlantis would have roughly equivilant production costs. Swapping in Browder and Black and removing the higher-salary folks (especially ones like Shanks and Anderson who wanted out) seemed like the right moves to control costs, and freshen up the show.

So why go through all that just to cancel? Where's the expense?

It's even stranger than that though.  I mean, they are reusing sets between them, so the actual production cost is reduced by having both shows.  Cost for Atlantis will go up after SG1 isn't around to help carry the burden.  Also, it is my belief that there is probably an increase in the Atlantis ratings because people want to watch both more than they want to watch just one.  That's called something in marketing, but I can't recall it right now (where product X is only ok on its own, but also helps boost sale of product Y).

I know what you mean -- it took a long time for me to start liking Atlantis on it's own, and I wouldn't have watched it if SG-1 hadn't come on prior to it. Maybe they're just cancelling because, after 10 years, they're just out of good ideas. Seems kinda strange that they'd bring in the Ori and just fix that in two seasons. You could have done that one for as long as the Gould -- it's a good background thread that doesn't have to be in every episode.

But hell, they've got spaceships and Asgard tech, and treaties with the Jaffa -- there's not a lot of mystery left in the ole' galaxy. It seems like Browder and Black can't seem to catch a break. :)
