I think it's been talked about here and there in other topics before but I just read through all the issues that have come out so far so I figured I'd make a thread here for Marvel's cosmic epic.
Now I wasn't expecting much from this. It's a big Marvel event that started off with 4 mini's (three of which feature minor characters Nova, Ronan the Accuser, and the Super Skrull), and other than Giffen I can't really say I know any of the writers. Marvel has also seemed to be at a bit of a loss in recent years as to what they should do with all their cosmic characters. You can only have Starlin bring out Thanos so many times, and it's even hard to do that when you manage to drive Starlin away from Marvel.
So I was surprised to find that it's actually been a pretty good Sci-Fi story so far. Sure you get some completely odd characterization which is typical for Marvel these days. Drax in particular seems to have had a major overhaul though there are reasons given for it in the story. They've also managed to kill off a couple characters so far, which is almost a shame in that the stories leading up to their deaths were probably the best uses of the characters in years. I'll say this of the writers, they aren't doing any throwaway death scenes here. Even when a minor character is killed in the prologue it's a good scene.
Of course the story isn't perfect. The sub-plot with Galactus' two enemies seems tacked on and I don't see much point to it yet. I also don't really buy Annihilus as this major of a threat, and the Annihilation Wave is just a swarm of disposable enemies. But really they're just an excuse to do a big cosmic war (that hopefully won't just drag on forever like the whole Kree/Skrull thing), and in that at least the story is success thus far.

I've been left cold. I've always loved Nova as a charcter, but just really haven't been able to get too into the story at all. It isn't terrible, but it isn't grabbing me as yet. The Silver Surfer series I've just not liked at all, though.

I've been planning to wait for trade on this one. I'm generally not into big space battles, though I prefer cosmic entities to aliens with blasters. The covers are all fantastic, though. Nova hasn't ever looked that cool.

See, I've never loved Nova. The Silver Surfer stuff really doesn't seem to do a lot to advance the main plot and it's whole purpose seems to be trying make to the Surfer stop acting like a depressed, whiny bitch all the the time.

If you take that away from the Surfer, then you have nothing at all.
