Ah San Diego... home to Comic-con and one of the hot-spots of Internet porn.  Someday when I don't have annoying commitments like a job I'll make a journey down there.  I know Redwood City must seem like a cool place to live, what with EA being down here and John Romero working on... well, some shit.  It's not nearly as fun a place as it sounds though.  This city pretty much shuts down at 8 o'clock.  So at some point I wouldn't mind taking a trip down to San Diego and... well to be honest the thought of picking up loose women is more appealing to me than going to a comic book convention, but I'm sure I'd manage to find some time to look around Comic-con.

Regardless this isn't the year for me, but the convention starts up in a couple days and anything I deem interesting enough to borrow from other sites I'll post up in here.

Edit:  For those unaware, SDCC takes place from the 20th to the 23rd this month.

I was born in Redwood City.

Lived in San Carlos until 2nd grade.  I miss Fashion Island mall.  It was home to my favorite arcade.  (Though I know they've since closed that whole thing down.)

Now I live in Scottsdale.  Say hello to a homeless person for me, would you?

I was also born in Redwood City.  It is a shame what happened to Fashion Island.  I remember the arcade.  It was called Gold Mine or something like that at first and then changed it's name to Tilt not long before the end.

Little bit of Pre-SDCC news:

Warhammer 40k comic to debut at Comic-Con.

Quote
Boom! Studios has announced the launch of a comic series based on Games Workshop's science fiction tabletop war game, Warhammer 40,000.  The Warhammer 40K comic will debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego this weekend with a special preview issue that will be sold at the Boom! Studios booth.  The first issue of the comic series is set for release in October.

The Warhammer 40K universe with its genetically engineered, battle hardened Space Marines facing off against the alien hordes of Orks, Tyrannids, Tau and Eldar, etc. is one of the fiercest and most action-packed gaming arenas ever created and it has spawned a popular CCG, novels, art books, and a new RPG (see "Warhammer 40K RPG"), so it appears to be a natural as a comic book setting

Newsarama has a really nice round-up of all the small publishers that will be at SDCC and the projects they're working on.  The first four parts (out of six) are here:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Comicbook Resources also has their round-up:

Part 1
Part 2

I've only skimmed both round-ups so far so I'll note anything particularly interesting once I've had the chance to read through them.

You know what?  I only remembered it as Tilt until you just said that.  You're right, it was something else first.  If I wasn't so young then, I could probably remember.

Bendis to write second Avengers title

A ways back Marvel announced that there would be another Avengers book.  Many fans hoped that it would be more of a "classic" Avengers book as an alternative to what Bendis is writing over in New Avengers.  Apparently this will not be the case as "The Mighty Avengers" will also be written by Bendis.

Quote
They will have different stories and themes,” said Bendis. “The stories will be told different ways and the characters will have completely different relationships. Plus both books - both teams - have a different agenda. A different goal.

“New Avengers has an air of conspiracy underneath it at all times. Something is wrong in the world and the heroes know it. Where the f*** is Nick Fury? What's wrong with S.H.I.E.L.D.? Who was the guy who started all of this in the first issue? Even when they're caught in a physical struggle, they are still in a conspiracy.

“Mighty Avengers will have big world threatening situations to deal with at all times. New heroes interacting with each other in a situation some of them have never been in before. To do this I have chosen some techniques that are not what I am most known for. But fun is the word of the day. Though we're very serious about our craft, the agenda is to make a spectacle of superhero extravaganza that you can only get from a top-flight Avengers title!”

Some tidbits from the Civil War panel:

Quote
Speaking about Civil War: X-Men, Hine said that the mutants decide that they've finally had enough. "It's an opportunity to bring back a lot of popular characters," Hine joked, "Like Micromax, and Sabra, and some brand new Sentinels."

Did anyone actually get depowered as a result of House of M?

Showing the slide for the upcoming issue of New Avengers with Iron Man, McCann noted, "If you think Iron Man is being a jerk right now, just wait..."

I can't believe I was ever worried that these guys just didn't get the characters they were writing  rolleyes

Fangoria working on a line of comics

Quote
Representing the biggest news in horror comics since the gory glory days of EC, Fangoria Entertainment - home of the industry's #1 horror genre magazine, website destination and weekly Sirius radio show - is expanding into the world of comic books with the launch of FANGORIA COMICS, it was announced by Fangoria Entertainment CEO Tom DeFeo.

Heading up FANGORIA COMICS is comic book guru Scott Licina, who brings a roster of top talent to the new comic company's creative team, including Tommy Castillo, Troy Brownfield, artist Mark Kidwell and colorist Milen Paranov.

First title under the FANGORIA COMICS banner is STRANGELAND DISCIPLE, based on heavy metal honcho/filmmaker Dee Snider's newest Captain Howdy flick. Several other titles are in development with announcements coming soon - including one of Leisure Books' hottest authors who's prepping a mini-series.

In addition to its current titles, FANGORIA COMICS will nail down the best horror movie directors, writers and effects artists to join forces for the creation of comic book titles derived from their movies in development. Working closely with Fangoria Entertainment, FANGORIA COMICS will also 'bundle' its horror comic line with horror DVD's and other media within the burgeoning Fangoria universe.

FANGORIA COMICS will make its official on-the-shelves debut in 2007, with a special preview comic that will be inserted inside Fangoria Magazine (subscriber version only).

"Under the tag line "FANGORIA COMICS - 'THE TRUE HOUSE OF HORROR,' these are comics for horror fans - bottom line. Readers are not going to turn away at the last minute - they're going to HAVE to watch all the gory, gruesome goodness - and LOVE IT! Real horror comics by real horror movie makers- I think it says it all. And top that off with the best artists, colorists and writers in the comic and literary fields. Can you feel the goosebumps?" said Licina.

Fuck, they give Bendis a SECOND Avengers title to fuck up? It sounds more like Justice League Unlimited, only with bad quips and mischaracterization galore.

Yeah really more info about how hot Rosario was on a scale from 10 to 10^10

Again let me explain that due to work I couldn't actually go to San Diego.  If you want to see Rosario just rent Alexander and skip through to the nude scenes.  Or read this if you actually want to know about her comic.

If I could have started my new job one week later I probably would have gone.  So far it doesn't sound like I missed much though.

Edit:  Geoff Johns and Richard Donner to co-write Action Comics starting with issue #844.  That's actually some pretty cool shit there.  Looking forward to it.

Marvel movie stuff:

Quote
Feige said that the first three films that Marvel is looking at are Captain America, Nick Fury, and Thor, and all are currently being worked on, actively.

Kit then introduced the filmmakers, beginning with Edgar Wright, who will be directing Ant-Man.

In regards to the story, Wright said he's not interested in making a spoof, but is looking at it as an action hero, and bring things back to his Tales to Astonish days, showing more as a secret crime fighter, rather than a comedy about an inch-tall man in tights.

As for the secret identity of Ant-Man in the film, Wright said his story involves both Henry Pym and Scott Lang, showing Henry Pym in a Cold War setting, and then flashing forward to show Lang in the current day. The plot elements from the history will remain, Wright explained, and there will be a working relationship between Pym and Lang after Lang steals the Ant-Man suit.

Asked if he'll have the full-on helmet, Wright said he liked the Tales to Astonish incarnation suit, with it's diving bell look. As such, in Wright's version of the story, the suit that Lang finds will be an old suit.

"It's very early days, so I wouldn't want to say anything one way or the other, and just to piss Simon off as well," Wright said, when asked if he might consider casting his Shaun star Simon Pegg in the Ant-Man movie.

Still speaking about Ant-Man, Wright said that while he doesn't want to gloss over 40 years of history of the character, Pym and Lang will most likely be the only characters from the comics appearing in the film. The director also said that he's really not interested in making a super-villain movie.

Talking about the larger approach to the material, Wright said that while the genre of shrinking people films ("If there is one") are usually about how scary it is to be small, but this will be about how kick-ass it is to be small.

Kit then introduced the just-announced director of the second Hulk movie, Louis Leterrier.
Killing rumors, Kit said that the next Hulk movie will not be straight-to-DVD, and will not star David Duchovny or Brendan Frasier, as rumors have alluded to.

Letterier said that initially, he had reluctance to taking the job, given that he is a relatively unknown French director who would be following in the footsteps of Ang Lee, and said “No” when he was first offered. Later, on a trip to Hollywood, Letterier met with Arad, who whispered the pitch for the movie in his ear, and shortly afterwards, he decided that he wanted to do it, and accept the challenge of returning the character to film.

Letterier said that shortly after deciding to do the film, he started storyboards and put together concept art for the film, something, Arad said, convinced them that they had the right man for the job.

When asked by Kit how the new Hulk film will be different in tone from the first film, Ari Arad [Avi’s son and fellow producer} said that the idea behind the next movie is to make the Hulk the action/adventure movie that fans want to see.

"A lot more Hulk as hero," Arad said.

In teasing the cast, Letterier said that General Ross will return, as well as a new villain - the Abomination. The director said that he felt that the Hulk needed an opposite number, and will give the threatening feeling you find in other superhero movies, where the hero could actually dies at the hands of the villain.

In regards to the screenplay for the Hulk, Letterier said that they're currently shooting ideas back and forth, and will begin filming in April.

Feige said that Marvel is very open to the idea of films with more than one hero, noting that if you look at the films that have been announced, it's no coincidence that they are members of the Avengers.

Asked will the Hulk talk in the new movie, "We don't know about that," Letterier replied. "But I just met Lou Ferrigno, and he said, 'I want to do the voice’. So we'll see."

The director said that his Hulk will be less green, and that he loves the grey Hulk. All in all, the film will resemble the television show in its fundamentals, in that Banner will be on the run, and knows he is cursed with a monster inside him, and the challenge will be to see that the monster can also be a hero.

Kit then introduced Favreau, who was met with sustained applause from the audience.
"Ant-Man was taken," Favreau joked, when asked how he became involved with Iron Man.

Favreau said that he'd been talking to Arad since he played Foggy Nelson in Daredevil, noting that Nelson occasionally represented Tony Stark...

"Not saying anything there...I mean, that's if I don't play Iron Man," the director joked.

Favreau said that he was advised by fans and comics’ pros to get artist Adi Granov involved in the movie, and he took the advice. The director called Granov to come up to the dais, and then showed a teaser image the artist had designed as a teaser movie poster.

Granov is doing design work for the film, and the image shown, Favreau said, is not the final armor design.

Speaking of his design work, Granov said that he chose first-off to make sure that the armor had a circular light on the chest, since the triangle never worked for him. Granov also praised Favreau for turning to comic book fans in making the film, something that's rarely seen.

"There's sort of a Robocop-type quality that this character can have," Favreau said in talking about which elements he likes in the armor, noting that he likes the ideas of weight and power, and an inorganic look over organic, rather than martial arts. The director reiterated that while he will be using special effects for the film, he wants to keep the feeling realistic, and not let the effects pull the movie away from the audience.

"There's one tech-based suit," Favreau said, explaining that Iron Man himself will be the major effect, rather than a world of special effects. The director said that the feel will be Tom Clancy, "But because it involves Tony Stark, there will be some James Bond in there."

Favreau said that he's looking at the anime Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, and Neon Genesis Evangellion for inspirations, but still trying to ground the film in the real world and real technology, "So the only buy you have to make is a guy in an Iron Man suit."

Asked if his Tony Stark will deal with his alcoholism, Favreau said that he's looking at Iron Man as a group of films, so he'll have time to explore how his weapons manufacturing and captivity (now in Afghanistan rather than Southeast Asia), and in looking at a the history of Tony Stark and Iron Man, as the stressors grew up around him in the comics, the alcoholism came in, and a similar path may be followed in the film. Favreau said that he'll be starting with the gray armor in the film, before moving on to a few different types of armor, and will end with the gold and red, evolving more into a weapons platform than a flying suit.

Will Tony Stark have a moustache or goatee? "If we cast Tom Selleck, a moustache, if we cast me, a goatee,” Favreau said.

Asked if Marvel Studios will be returning to a Daredevil film, Avi Arad said that in time, they plan to get to it.

And just as the panel was closing, Favreau said that the villain in the Iron Man film will be the Mandarin.

Rosario was in the same hotel as us. She is really, really teeny tiny. Almost Seth Green tiny. He was in our hotel too, and is pocket-sized. He bantered with my 8-year-old daughter a bit, and seemed pretty cool.
