Yea. F13 isn't paying the bills. In fact, it's costing me money.

So, I throw my hat in the ring. I need to find a job. Any tips for someone who isn't willing to take a job where he'll want to gouge his eyes out? So, anyone know of any companies I should look at out here? Or anyone know anyone out here who needs uhm, somebody like me? I'm not even sure what that means anymore. But you get the picture.

As for gaming jobs in the valley, go take a look at the "offerings" on Gamasutra. As for the stuff not on Gamasutra, it's pretty much limited to the Stargate SG-1 MMOG team and I've very good reason to believe they're running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Let's just say the whole "gaming" thing isn't happening out here.

(Part of the point of posting this is that I'd like to find a job where I don't have to give up f13. The Industry doesn't provide me with that privilege)

Only thing we have is a Senior Marketing Activation Manager in Phoenix.  Maybe you could be a bouncer at a strip club?

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

If this board software can do Paypal subscriptions, I would sign up for $5 a month. I do it for my guild website and I spend just as much time here. This site is almost as entertaining as a $15/month MMOg.

I have never played WoW.

I'd actually thought about the $5 a month thing for a while, but I'm not entirely sure it's reasonable. There's too many places you can go and talk about the same shit for free. What's to stop anyone from just doing that?

Make it voluntary. I bet you get at least 20 takers. I never intended to propose a mandatory payment to read this site. My guild site is voluntary and some of us are happy to help defray hosting costs.

Just for some rundown, aside from any writing experience, I spent my high school and college years in retail. Just under a decade of retail to be exact. I'm not sure I can go back to that, and that's why I posted here, thinking maybe someone knew of a good company out here that was worth looking into.

Edit: Aside from Google, Intel, and Microchip - I know I'm not qualified for that shit.

I don't have specific leads, but here's a site I keep an eye on.  You may find that you're qualified to do a number of these things.

http://www.ad2phoenix.com/job_bank/index.php

You won't find a "professional blowjob receiver" posting on there any time soon, but for the most part they're decent jobs to do for a while to pay the bills.

So, uh.. what's your degree in?

The builder market in Phoenix is hiring like mad.  Cad support and office work, obviously, since you're nowhere near as cheap as illegal labor.  (What? Noo of course they're all legal.. that's not a dirty little seceret everyone turns a blind eye to that I just blurted out.)  I'd be out there myself if it didn't mean relocating closer to my wife's fucking-crazy-as-hell father and stepmother and away from the family support network I've got here.

Well, that, and the whole, "so if all these people are moving to the desert, where's the water coming from?" problem I keep hearing about.

I think you should go with Blackwater Security or whatever that company's name is.  You go out to their HQ in Virginia train for a few months and then you get phat loot working in Iraq protecting contractors or something.  You just have to avoid getting beheaded or hung from a bridge after being shot a few times.

Sounds like you're being awfully fussy for someone with no qualifications.  Open a paper, look for trades work.  Painting, framing, roofing, etc.  Maybe there's a machine shop in your area willing to take on a newbie.

If those choices sound too physical, and you apparently can't go back to retail then I'd say your motivation to work isn't sufficiently developed.

Don't knock the tool belt. Ever heard of a roofer being asked where his cover page was on his TPS report?

Don't have near the number of dickhead bosses you have in the corporate world. Then again, being a roofer until you are 60 is hard work.

How much is it costing you a month? Good Virtual Private Server setups are pretty cheap these days (shared hosting is teh suck). You can get something to support the site minus the game server and maybe the large file downloads (dunno how much bandwidth you are sucking up) for $20 - $30 a month. A donation button is a good idea as well (I agree mandatory subscriptions would drive away too many people). Or setup an Amazon affiliate account and link your weekly game releases to Amazon. Heck I'd even vote in favor of AdSense text ads on the forums if that's what it took to keep this place running.

Did you actually get a degree?  If so...

edit:  I'm serious, it's probably one of your best chances to get something not mediocre.  They usually don't care too much what your degree is in, just that you have one.

I actually look at USAjobs fairly often. Right now there are a grand total of 35 positions available in Phoenix, I'm fairly sure I'm not qualified to be a special agent or optometrist or Auditor. Apparently the government does not like the desert. EXCEPT FOR HIDING ALIENS.

Maybe one of those 'alien playmate' positions will open up.

Along the lines of donation .. if you could ever secure some of those closed beta spots you could raffle them away with donations of $10 or more (or something). If they'd even let you do something like that.

I know a lot of sites offer something a little extra for donations (for example, wallpaper or screensavers) so something like that would be incentive to donate every month.

..

As for a job. It's hard. Your best bet would be to get in at an entry level position at a company doing stuff you like, even if you aren't involved in that stuff yet. It's much easier to prove yourself once you are in the door than to reach for the sun and get burned.

So you don't like my suggestion to work as a line cook? I tell you, your appearance is intimidating. You'd be great. I think the suggestion to be a bouncer at a titty bar is a fantastic one. Particularly since your standards are so high, you won't be tempted by the candy. Or you could be a butcher's apprentice. I see you in blood and knives. Not sure why, but the image sticks.
