Finished campaign on medium difficulty, but haven't played MP yet.
Stuff I liked:
The weapons. There are a lot of them, and they're mostly fun. Your weapons get upgrades sometimes too, which may be an innovation or something.
The atmosphere. Strogg are into twisted stuff. Plenty of human bits scattered around for various functions. Strange biological devices abound.
The bosses are kinda fun.
Enemy AI seems decent. They try to flank you and whatnot. They use cover.
There's some funny here and there, but not enough IMO.
Stuff I didn't like:
I think I played this game before when it was called Halo, only it had more fun and a better story in it then.
Does every level have to be full of small twisty corridors? I hate small twisty corridors. Give me a few outside type open areas dammit!
"This is snake squad, we're coming to help." "This is snake squad, we're all dead".... over and over and over...
Hmm, loading, loading, loading, and still loading.....
Everything is just so scripted. Really scripted. There is never more than one path. Ever.
So in conclusion, it's basically quake 2 with a whole lot more shiny. If Quake2 is your version of the Robot Jesus, then this is the game for you. If not, worth a look maybe, but nothing too great IMO.

The only thing that kinda made me want to buy it was the plot stuff I heard about your buddy marines all constantly taking bets on when you were going to get killed or sent to a chopshop.

If somebody complets a Quake4Fortress mod, I am there.
Otherwise...meh. FEAR is awesome enough for now and there really are too many games for me to enjoy to worry about single-player quake.

If Quake2 is your version of the Robot Jesus, then this is the game for you. Thing is, Quake 2 is/was Robot Jesus (as far as FPS's go) but that still doesn't sell this for me. We live in a gaming world now where we've seen dozens of successors to Quake's Robot Jesus. This selling point may have worked for me 3 or 4 years ago, but not now. 16 player capacity multiplayer is definitely in the spirit of things though, I'll give them that. Gotta hand it to them for including not just Deathmatch, but Team DM, and CTF too. They're really shooting for the stars here!

My point was that single player Quake4 really tries hard to be just like single player Quake2, only with more shiny. Same monsters, weapons, planet, weird scenery, twisty mazey levels... 16 player capacity multiplayer is definitely in the spirit of things though, I'll give them that. Heh. Truly underwhelming. It's strange too that MP feels more like quake3 than single player does. It's actually hard to tell them apart.

Whenever an opponent discards a card, Megrim deals 2 damage to that player.

Very, very similar to q3 in terms of dynamics. Probably even a little faster. There is at the moment a slow but steady flow of q2 and q3 duelling maps being converted, but most of the stock ones bundled with the game are good. The weapon balance is also quite good (hard to tell atm) and i think maybe even better than q3. The rail now does 100 iirc and the reintroduction of the nailgun further opens the possibility for quick reversals (and rewards good aim), as it does huge damage and is available on most maps. The chaingun now also includes sniper mode (!), and i do seem to recall that in one of the pre-release tourneys fatal1ty was saying something about the zoom mode being overpowered, but i've not noticed any outstanding issues. It may or may not have been fixed for release. Also, i _think_ they toned down the lightning gun a bit, but it still eats armour like a whore. There is that hyperblaster thing too, but as to just how useful it is... There are a few miscellaneous glitches (such as blood decals on players showing through some walls if you are zoomed in /w rail/chaingun) but nothing gamebreaking. Oh, and you can't bhop up stairs anymore. Furthermore, while you would want a top of the line system to run it configs & tweaks _are_ plentiful, so even a mid-range system should be able to handle it quite well (it's not like you _need_ dynamic lighting =p). - meg *Edit i hate keyboards
