Anyone currently subscribed to Eve Online, and do you have any "buddy" invites I could utilize? I am curious to see what it is all about.
Oh and if you do I will love you long time and post 3 pictures of cute kittens. Thank you. Edit. Nevermind. After doing some internet sluething I found a direct link to the 14 day trial. https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=100204I will still post a picture though, even if it is for my self gratification. Additional: this was flashed on my screen as I logged in: Currently there are 8144 players on the server and of that 1023 are trial accounts. The server is configured to accept a maximum of 3000 trial accounts. Interesting!

I've been playing EVE about 3 months and haven't gotten tired of it yet. I think it might be because skill training takes place offline so I don't feel like I need to grind obsessively towards uberdom. If you have any problems or questions feel free to drop me a line. Character name is "Regel".

Well, you don't grind levels, but you "grind" ISK (money), status etc.
But it's somewhat fun to do, so there.

How's the Shiva expansion/update going ? My last subscription ran out way before it was introduced.
And most importantly, did they do anything about travel time ?

It was a fun game, and I loved the character advancement, but ultimately it wasn't enough to keep me in it. I didn't make any social ties in the game, so once the Corp crew (Excluding Taer and Mr. Crick) quit I found myself incredibly bored running back and forth and staring at the screen a lot while grinding ISK to support my little battlecruiser. Wayyy too much downtime for me, though, and with the added possibliity of being ganked in one of the .04 security sectors and losing my 2-week investment I decided it was just best to unsubscribe.
Edit: Travel Times.. they actually increased. The last expansion/ patch was called "Cold War" and last I was paying attention they were going to remove the ability to do 'instant jumps' to gates. (Bookmarks set to within warp-gate activation distance.)

In all respects but the PvP it sounds like a game I'd enjoy. Any word yet on whether they are considering a more traditional consensual PvP rule set?

I do believe traditional is open PvP. Damn kids these days, all with their spyrographs and sex parties.
Main thing about Eve is the information. It just hits you like a fat man charging a buffet. I mean its cool having a plethora of information, but shiiiiiiiiiiit. I am still in the tutorial; evidently I cannot put cool things on my brand spankin' new frigate without some skill called "Mechanic." Tonight I will switch to research mode and actually learn stuff! Oh and there are a lot of people in the game. Though of course this is misleading seeing as they have only one "shard."

If you mean a flag type system, then no. If anything they've made changes to expose player to more PVP opportunities than to remove them. The non-pvp crowd is almost non-exsistent in the game and PVP is what keeps it going and keeps people's subs, so hindering that would just shoot them in the foot.
The general rule I heard on boards and the newbie help channel was 'don't fly more than you can afford to replace.' Sure, I loved my 3-million ISK Battlecruiser "Lounge Act" but I really shouldn't have been flying more than a 100k Frigate given the time I was able to dedicate/ keep interested in farming ISK.
Edit: Cheddar - go to eve-i.com and browse the forums there. I found a wealth of information from players that let me make sense of what was thrown at me as well as some nifty tools. Definatly download the Eve Character Planner and ShipFit by Future Falcon. Character Planner was invaluable in helping me to make the most out of when I could login to learn new skills, meaning my character was never just sitting there idly not learning anything.
Also, the FIRST skills you want to train up are learning skills. It seems like a boring waste of time because you don't get anything 'fun' to play with like missle firing or guns, but it cuts down on training time by a HUGE amount when you hit rank 4 and 5 (like a few days in some cases) on tier 1 skills and even more on tier 2+ skills.

What do you mean by "more traditional" ? PvP flags, PvP areas that are just a few select regions instead of the main playscape - the approaches we've seen since UO, DAOC, and WoW. There are times I want to fight and other times I want to explore/adventure - by far I prefer the latter. As I understand EVE yes there are non-PvP areas but these are the equivalent of tutorial lands where one sees very little of what's available in the majority PvP areas. If anything they've made changes to expose player to more PVP opportunities than to remove them. Yup sounds like they've very efficiently bred their marketbase to a very specific demographic. Jumpgate had the same intense focus on market niche. When the hell do I get a decent space MOG with realistic physics and decent economy/PvE combat. Sigh...

You can spend your entire EVE career in Empire space mining up the common minerals, manufacturing, researching and running agent missions and never set foot in the PvP zones if you don't want to. Don't let the non-consensual PvP turn you off. It's not like early UO where if you wanted to leave town to do anything fun you ran the risk of being ganked.

Would I be doing the UO equivalent of never advancing beyond level 80, e.g. can I still enjoy pretty much all the content? I know "all the content" is pretty vague but I mean is would I be walling myself away from any significant parts of the game.

Eve-i.com is down. They've been "changing servers, waiting on DNS to update" for the past two weeks. I'm guessing that the owner of that fan site isn't able to pay for it anymore (paypal donations were slim, despite it being the best / most popular fan site for the game).
As for the Cold War, that's the name of the current "release", although you won't see any sort of cold war events (paranoia, arms races, political posturing, etc.) in the news. They've removed the highways, making travel between the various regions longer, they're changing some ships yet again, and in general everything is geared towards combat. Their current aim is to entice players to build their own stations out in the wilderness and have wars defending them.
As far as the skill system, they've added a bunch of skills with pretty high prerequisites, meaning that in order to get access to Tech2 gear (which is the only stuff up to par with the end-game PvP gear), you need to train for a while. They've been getting lots and lots of new players, with the playerbase slowly increasing (which just indicates that they're not in a slump like they were 6 months after release).
As far as "all the content", EVE content is in the player conflict and interaction. Star systems are pretty much the same, you've seen one, you've seen all 5000 of them. "Empire" has NPC stations, restricted PvP, and generally lots of amenities, whereas "0.0" doesn't, unless some alliance has built something there, in which case they'll kill all strangers on sight. The PvE aspects, and NPC's/missions, aren't that developed, and so once you're past the grind for cash, the only thing left to do is group PvP. Which you can pick up at any time by joining an alliance or another and indicating your desire to participate in the various wars they're involved in.

The hugest of the ships can only exist in low security space. The same goes for the player made space stations. The rarest and most valuable minerals are also mined exclusively in low security space. The first two can be considered to be the EVE "end game." The thing is, they can't be accomplished solo. They require a whole group of people to keep them going. That's what the EVE guilds are for. Ultimately, what every corp wants is to claim it's own little area of low security space where it can build it's own stations and make a home for itself. There are alliances of EVE corps that defend these areas. With hundreds of players helping you aren't on PvP duty all the time. And there are plenty of ways that a PVE style player can contribute and earn access to the benefits of low security space without doing any PvPing at all.

Yah, with the "cold war" patch.
"Capital Ships" is a rank 14 skill that requires Advanced Spaceship Command V which is a rank V skill Ow. (2h to train CS level 1 and 29d to train level V of ASC with 21per 17will)

Well I like things so far, but the slow pace is going to take some getting used to. I am still not sure what skills I should be training; for now I am just randomly learning ones that sound bitchin'. I HATE how long it takes to dock, but guess thats part of the flavor.

You should definately make figuring out where you want to go with the character and working out a skill plan a priority. Also (obviously) make sure your always training, despite what the stupid popup says you can pause a skill with no loss of points and work on something else.
Damn you guys, perhaps I will reactivate my sub so I can start training CruiserV for HAC's.

*drools* How big are they ? Wish I knew. I stopped playing shortly after the patch and despite being almost cool enough to handle a Battle Cruiser (some skills were a little under where they should be to be 'optimal' but fuck that it's a fucking BATTLE CRUISER) I didn't venture into the abyss of 0.0 to check them out since I'm Corpless_Target_00

Train Navigation. Then train Afterburners. Afterburners are just about my favourite ship mod. :)

The point is that Eve doesn't really have "content". The players are the content. This game is a sandbox and most of the development goes to give the players more tools and toys to use (see now the conquerable space stations and systems).

That's attractive to me. Seems to out of style though - so many in this community claim to hate sandboxes/virtual worlds. Of course you'll often find the same members complaining in another thread about "content on rails"... ;)

Just to underscore that "the players are the content." I did the same 6 mission cycle about 5 times just trying to grind faction with one contact. Other contacts of the same faction just gave the same missions, so switching to a different starbase wasn't going to help.

I am really looking forward to resubbing to this game, I play it at least 3-4 Months per year. But this time I have to get into a pretty big corp. I want to do some serious PvP, and my little drone cruiser was ideal for missions, but fights against non-ai pirates ? No thank you, I'll just keep my money :-D

The hugest of the ships can only exist in low security space. Don't tell me titans where finaly released No, Titans have not been released. Dreadnaughts have been released, which are of on par with the size of Titans using the previously mentioned Capital Ship skills. Titans are going to be mobile stations, and will be released with Kali. Dreadnaughts are anti-POS ships, probably the most combat-y of the Capital Ships (barring possibly the Carrier depending on how those drones work out). Another Capital Ship class that was released, Frieghters are Station-to-Station cargo mules to the umpteenth degree. To correct an earlier mistake, they've not removed instant bookmarks either. There has been player talk of this for awhile, but the dev's have been leaning to a solution that nerfs instant BM's (by providing an in game solution, be it module or skill) while at the same time reducing the impact of the BS w/o afterburner or MWD crawling from gate to gate at the default 15km warp in points. The Cold War patch did remove some highway systems that connected all four empires, and travel time was increased some for players only in empire. But they did add quite a few new 0.0 entrances, as well as made some region connectors out in the 0.0 regions to make cross region travel a bit quicker. This entire Cold War empire tension setting is merely setting the stage for one of their Kali features - picking an empire and fighting on their side against one of the other empires. But we will see how that falls out when Kali gets alot closer.

Hmm.. thanks for clearing that up, Cougar. I thought the Titans *had* come out. The various boards weren't clear on that when I read 'em. Plus I know my bookmarks all went to hell after the CW patch so I figured they torched 'em the way I'd been reading they were going to. CW came out as I was getting bored and lonely in-game so I only played a few weeks after it patched in. I suppose I should have clarified more that I was a realive Eve Noob with only a million or so skill points.

I really like EVE, but I can only tolerate the insane travel times for so long. Even with instant bookmarks and MWDs (two!) it's a huge bore and burns through most of my play time.
I also had thought Kali was out already. I don't have an active login anymore so I can't check the Dev Blogs..

Eve is a really good game, in homeopathic doses. Should I ever get into a decent RP/PvP corp, I could waste a good part of my live in it.

Things are going well. Got me a punisher frigate, and am going to mine for a bit to make some scratch. Besides dyng and then flying in a pod halfway around the galaxy before figuring out that you can get a new ship things have been going swimmingly. Pace is definitely easy going. I like that at times.

Upcoming EVE Online Expansion - Codename KALI KALI, a codename for EVE Onlines second major expansion. The Cold War edition of EXODUS brings rising tension between the Empires in the world of EVE and KALI will bring the results of the recent hostilities. Factional warfare is the hot topic in KALI, with new ships, infrastructure and improvements to support it. The final KALI feature set has not been announced. Major development of KALI started August 2005.
