Remember that mining is NOT the only way for a newbie to make money. You can do level 1 missions perfectly well in a decent frigate and they can earn you enough ISK to get by. Also, the early storyline missions that you'll get often give out valuable implants as rewards. Selling one or two of those will easily buy you a few frigates while you get up to speed.

Mining will make you money but don't burn yourself out doing it because it's horribly, horribly dull.

That being said, it's worthwhile to get your mining skill up to level 4 before you spend much time at it. The level 2 mining lasers are cheap and much, much more effective than the level 1s.

How does insurance work?  Is it only for a single trip or is it active until triggered?

Insurance works for a length of time, or until your ship goes kablooie.  The only problem is you can only cover the total cost of the hull, not your cargo or load-out, sooo never run at a 0 bank account thinking "well if I blow-up at least insurance will cover me."

Of course, killing NPC pirates or doing missions always gave me enough stuff to load-out my replacement ship with at least mediocre stuff until I could fly to pickup new items.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

I am going to focus on mining while I work on skills.  Current goal is to earn 750k.  With this I can get a Slave ship and fill its hull up with lots of ore.  My little punisher makes around 18k a run, so will take a bit before I earn this much.  Grind grind grind grind!  Fun times.

No Nerf, but I put a link to this very thread and I said that you all can guarantee for my purity. I even mentioned your case, and see if they can take a look at your lawn from a Michigan perspective.

See this is my problem with committing to a relationship with EVE.  I got all interested in her and then someone reminds me she's extremely high-maintenance and not all that wild in bed.

Well if you insist on mining to make 18k a run there's not much I can do. You're going to feel awfully silly when you get your skills trained and find yourself making 10 times that. :)

If you have at least an ok combat ship I recommend doing missions as well. Since it builds up factions (which unlocks agents that can give you even better missions later) it's a really really good thing to do right away.

Also, keep an eye on the chat channels for ex-eve players who are giving away their money!  :-D
(Won a race when I was a noob and got quite a bit of dough (10mil I think?) which I used for buy all my skills and a frigate).
