I recently ordered some new computer parts from newegg.com, as I've done business with them before, and they are very quick and their website is well organized. UPS made a delivery attempt today, and as is typically the case, I wasn't home due to work. I got the InfoNotice number and went to have UPS hold on to the package, so I can pick it up at their distribution center, and lo, it's not an option. Called UPS, and they apparently have a contract with NewEgg.com that prevents them from changing the shipping addresses/method in any way, even to just holding packages at the distribution center. I called NewEgg.com, asked about this, and had it confirmed, they couldn't even authorize UPS to allow it to help me out.
I'm pretty ticked about this, as I'm never home to receive packages, because I work. Newegg, I'll browse your site and use your bandwidth... but I don't think I'll be buying from you again.

I do one of two things when this happens.
1 - If you're close to the UPS distro, drive over there and show up around 6:30pm. Sign and pick it up there.
2 - Write a note that says something like "Dear UPS dude, I authorize you to leave the package here on the porch. I take full responsibility if it's smashed/stolen. MyNameHereInPrint MySignature.
(3) - Hope you have an honest delivery person who doesn't take the note and your loot.

I get all my goodies delivered to me at work.
It helps if you add your work address to your credit card's list of approved addresses.

Lots of sites have similar policies (won't ship to addresses that are different from the credit card address etc) due to fraud. The more fraud a site gets hit with the more strict their policies are. You think exploiters and dupers are bad in MMOs? Those same kinds of fuckers order computer parts. Credit card numbers can be bought for less than $10 each.

Yeah that's what I do but I live about 6 miles from my UPS distribution center.

As mentioned, you can call your credit card company (or bank) and have them specially authorize another address for shipping. Anything that won't fit in my mailbox at home, I have delivered to work.
Last time I built a computer I had all the parts delivered to my office, assembled it there, and brought home a fully functioning brand new PC. Much easier than having five giant boxes delivered to my slightly cramped apartment and doing it there.

Yeah, next time I'm just having stuff shipped to work, now that I work at an office where that is deemed a reasonable thing to do. Not that I expect to have a 'next time' any time soon, as I generally wait a couple years between upgrades... who knows where I'll be working at that point.

I had all my recent purchases from newegg delivered by FedEx. Don't know if they have the same policy as UPS, but I got my stuff delivered here to my apartment without a hitch.

Most places I deal with allow both a billing address and multiple shipping addresses. I haven't had to ask my bank for anything; I just use my home address as the billing and ship everything bigger than a breadbox to my office. Also nice to be able to ship gifts to folks out of town.

I usually do the note thing and have them drop it in a semi-safe location (e.g. inside the garage). Granted, I know my "regular" UPS guy so your mileage may vary.

Same. I odn't think I've ever had a FedEx delivery get turned back because someone wasn't home. Also, I think UPS just drops our stuff at the front door, as my house gets a lot of stuff (computer parts and car parts). Never had a problem.

I had a similar issue ordering a $1000 camera from a place in New York. Wasn't home to recieve it so I called UPS and told them to hold it. Told me I had to have permission from the company that shipped it, and they wouldn't leave it at the apartment for me due to the value.
Ended up having to get UPS and the Camera store on a three way call on my cell while driving over to the UPS depot. Big pain in the ass.

Could also leave a note promising $20 to the driver if he comes back at a time you will be home.

I get stuff delivered to work, as an approved cc address. I've also had to go get stuff from the UPS distribution center, it's never been a problem.

UPS amazes me sometimes. Once upon a time I ordered a case of ammo and a couple of bayonets from an online store. The store's shipping policy said I had to be home to sign for it so I made arrangements to take the projected arrival day off work. The day before the stuff was scheduled to arrive, I get home and find 500 rounds of 8mm Mauser and 2 bayonettes sitting on the front porch. I'm half afraid that if I ever have a rifle shipped to the house, they'll leave it on the porch as well.

When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was bullshit!

My experience with FedEx on "Signature Required" deliveries is that if you aren't home when they come around the first day, they'll schedule an attempt the next day for after business hours. At worst, you have to leave work a little early. UPS the driver comes when he comes, and if you aren't there, too bad.

Just last weekend I had a shipment sent via Fedex Ground to my work address (standard practice for me to send everything to my work address) - but for some reason they had it down as a Residential address and tried to deliver it on a Saturday! (Saw this the Friday before).
Of course I called them up and said hey, if you are going to deliver it on a Saturday can you change it to my home address? Since, you know, businesses tend to be closed on weekends. Nope sorry!
And for some stupid reason Fedex Ground doesn't work on Mondays, so I don't get the package until Tuesday.
No more Fedex Ground for me!

I simply don't understand why people use UPS anymore. We use FedEx as our main shipping service because their prices are drastically lower than UPS. Gone are the days where UPS was the best deal.
How can brown overcharge you?

Because there is more to service than price? We use UPS here because we know the guys and they go out of their way to serve us. That's more important than a buck or two, imo. I'm all about people, not prices.

I have had nothing but bad luck with FedEx. However my UPS guy can recognize me by face and hand me any packages as I walk by him in the complex. I'm willing to pay a bit extra to make sure packages are delivered in a timely manner, or at least attempted. The last few FedEx packages I've had they didn't even come to the door the first attempt.

Not when you're shipping to customers. Price is king.

At Newegg, anyway, the prices for 3-day shipping are the same. Maybe I'll try FedEx this time, tho FedEx is typically a 'hurl the package out the door on the way by' kinda delivery in my neighborhood... My house is in the city. Not the worst part of the city, but far from the burbs. At least the UPS guy does stop and get out of the truck.
(There was some hyperbole here. But FedEx guys do tend to spend as little time away from the truck as possible, to the point of running to my door and back. You gotta be QUICK to catch them still at the door when they knock. My spouse prefers to grab a book and wait for them on the porch.)

Oh, I know the reality of modern business. I just happen to think it's fucking over america to save a couple bucks. But I'll skip the rant.
