Jesus, it's so unnerving to find people who don't like Seinfeld.  All this time I was convinced that it was the greatest comedy to ever air on network television.

I used to LOVE it. I'd race home from my night class every Thursday to see it. But now I'm just so over it. Everything that was funny then is now just a cheese grater on my skin.

Today is too much caffiene day btw. I'm manic as hell. I'm LOL'ing at my own lame jokes (or rather, lame movie references).

For the time being, I'm funnier than Seinfeld. In my own mind.

No, I laughed at that comment.  I only felt the need to tell you about it after you started evincing desperation and uncertainty about it though.

Said my piece on Seingfeld ages ago.  I don't find it funny.  I've never found a single episode even remotely smile worthy.

Seinfeld is one of the worst, most overrated shows ever to befoul TV and fuck up what producers believe people will laugh at ever.

Heart Seinfeld. Even though I can recite nearly every episode verbatim, I still think it is hilarious. My fav secondary character was always Jackie Chiles. He fucking ruled.

I'm really curious what you would consider a "good" network television comedy?  I'm already laughing at your response.

Then that means my response is actually funny, something Seinfeld wasn't. Try Everybody Hates Chris.

Seinfeld is not for everyone, but you have to give it credit for being different from the sea of similar-minded sitcoms.

I think it helps a lot if you are from a blue state. Definitely not a red state kind of show.

How can you not find "anyone can just take a reservation - it's the *holding* that makes the reservation..." funny as hell?

Seinfeld is the only shitcom that I've ever found funny. Most just take their best shot at bludgeoning your intellect into the ground. Could be worse, could be reality TV.  Now there's a genre that needs to result in several TV execs being ripped apart by enraged monkeys.

I doubt if the humor in Seinfeld is very cross-cultural. It's a show for people on the US coasts.

There was a comment by Larry David or someone where he said they managed to take a jab at about 100 cultures throughout the shows life. And there were a bunch of episodes ragging on middle America. It wasn't just for the people on the coast, it was only for people on the coasts. And Puerto Ricans.

Humor is always a difficult cross-cultural transfer.  Roman humor is weird and I never get it.  English humor is weird and sometimes I get it (The Office).  That said Seinfeld has aired all over the world.

I defy anyone to watch The Contest and not laugh.  Seinfeld was wildly uneven, but most of the shows in seasons 2-4 are pretty good.

BTW, I hope you are all watching Extras on HBO. It is hilarious.

Watching Seinfeld was like playing Keno. Every once in a while you'd hit on "The Contest" or the Marine Biologist/golfball reveal, or Shrinkage, and it made you forget about the last half dozen times you didn't win.

I saw a trailer for it after CYE last week and had TiVo grab an episode for me. Haven't seen it yet, but it looks promising.

I'm just curious as to how long they plan to run the series. They can't really carry it beyond the Fall of Caeser can they?

I dunno, I heard that Octavian kid was kinda important :)

I'm guessing the first season will stop shortly after Ceasar's death.  That leaves Rome being split between Octavian and Antony, Antony's affair with Cleopatra, the killing of Ciscero/Brutus, the return of Pompey's son, and Octavian becoming Emporer.  I don't think the question here is if there's a good story, but how Pullo and Verenus fit into it and maybe later seasons, since the show focuses heavily on them.

I'm not sure where a third season would go, though.  Does it stay with Augustus until his death?  Even then, you'd be hard pressed to keep Pullo and Verenus in for long. Do they go onto Tiberius, a relatively unknown Emporer?  Maybe you jump to Nero, and get into that Jesus thang, or wrap it up with Constantine, probably the 3rd most recognized Roman ruler?

Ack, spoilers? Ceasar dies?  tongue

Anyway, IMO FX is the best channel on TV by a longshot right now. (I don't get HBO, but I have never been a fan of HBO) The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny..., Starved and Over There are all good shows. It's pretty amazing given that a couple years ago FX was all bad movies and 6 hours of Fear Factor a day. The shows don't feel dumbed down like network TV shows, but at the same time they don't have stuff just for the sake of having it, which has always been a problem with HBO for me. ("Let's do this because we can!")

A good example is Sex and the City. (Sex in? the City?) If you watch the edited versions on TBS, you really aren't missing much from the HBO versions. To me that is the definition of gratuitous sex. (Not that I watch a lot of the TBS or HBO versions, but I have seen a few of each) The R-rated parts of the show add almost nothing to it.

Is Nip/Tuck good again?  I thought it jumped the shark somewhere in early season 2 or perhaps even late season 1.  The whole thing with Matt and his life coach was just stupid.  I've been meaning to watch the Shield for a time now (probably too late to start TIVOing it)  and with Recue Me.. I just don't find firefighters interesting.

HBO for me is great but I just wish we didn't have to wait so long between show runs.  It's killing me waiting for the new Sopranos and especially Deadwood.  Here's just hoping that both shows take their plot progression a bit more seriously this time.

Sopranos
Deadwood
Rome
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Extras
Entourage (actually good now)

Personally, I like watching a network where people can swear, tits can be shown, and folks die gruesome, horrible deaths (I hear they do this on network TV too).  I mean hell, Deadwood brought the term cocksucker back into the modern vernacular.  A lot of the nudity shown may be gratuitous but at least the shows, IMO, aren't being all gunshy over showing a boob or butt while at the same time showing some guy take a gun shot to the forehead.  Network TV sex scenes are pretty much a joke,\; what woman really makes a conscious effort to cover up her boobs during sex?  (Aside: Battlestar Gallactica has done some of the best PG-13 sex scenes I've seen from any show)

F/X has been rerunning the Shield from the start of season one on Saturdays, 3 episodes at a time.  I think it's 3 or 4 weeks in now, so they're about halfway through the first season.  I had no idea F/X was going to do that, but luckily my TiVo is smarter than I am and grabbed them anyway.
