Substitute accused of choking studentBOSTON (AP) -- The Department of Social Services is investigating a claim that a substitute teacher choked a 12-year-old boy until he lost consciousness. The alleged incident took place last Thursday at the John Marshall Elementary School in the city's Dorchester neighborhood, where Anthony Jackson is in the fifth grade. According to a report in Wednesday's Boston Herald, the teacher allegedly asked the class how long it would take for a student to black out. When students didn't know, she began to choke the boy. Anthony told his grandmother that the teacher held him so tightly around the neck for so long that he lost consciousness, the Herald said, and no one called for medical help after he fell to the floor. He quickly regained consciousness and was not injured, other than a slight headache. School officials apologized to Jackson's mother, the Herald reported. DSS received a complaint on Tuesday, prompting the investigation, agency spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said. "We have a lot of interviewing to do," she said. A preliminary report is due within 10 days. School officials declined to release the substitute's name. She has been given an administrative assignment until the investigation is complete and was told to stay away from the Marshall School and its students, school officials said. "We take very seriously all claims of incidents involving students in schools," Boston Public Schools spokesman Jonathan Palumbo said.

Shit, that was pretty stupid now wasn't it. I mean sure, we used to do that to one another or even ourselves when we were about 12. Hyperventilate a bit, then squeeze the sides of your neck till you pass out - was quite a bizzare sensation, though I only did it once. But I was a stupid fucking 12 year old, not a techer.

The Department of Social Services is the wrong institution to be investigating this. If I were the parents I would have sworn out a charge with the police.

9 to 16 seconds after losing conciousness from lack of oxygen will give brain damage, with death following at the 16-25ish second mark.
I train with 16 stone muscle bound ultra macho testerone loaded MMA types, and all take chokes and safety _very seriously, for a teacher to do to a child.... unreal.

Way to pull numbers out of your ass. Not that choking someone is OK, but don't go spreading lies and crap you pull out of your but. Google search Anoxic Brain Injury and then come fix your post.

If you want, i can choke you out, then hold it for 30 secs to see what happens? I only used the figures drummed into me by the instructors <shrug> Ill take the advice of people who use chokes day in day out over google, even if it isnt medically perfect info. Better safe than sorry n all that, turning a mate into a vegatable wouldnt be much fun.

Cool, E-peen wars. Speaking of wars, I've been in two and had drummed into me by my instructors that you better hold that choke a good 10 minutes if you don't want that fucker getting up behind you and sticking a knife in your back. Obviously, we are after different results. You would rather be safe than sorry and I would rather just be safe. I don't plan on chokeing anyone out unless my life depends on it.

Woah.. 10 mins? I'll ask about when next down the academy. Perhaps its best the instructors exagerate in order to emphasise the danger or something. A bit of leeway incase of a lawsuit. The Marine close combat manual is mostly BJJ too afterall (if thats what you did) Yeh, its a sport after all. In years of MMA though, whenever people are put to sleep instead of tapping, the reaction from everyone i know when the referee doesnt immediatly stop the fight is "woah thats so dangerous brain damage death etc etc it dont take long" and when a bunch of hardened violence addicted MMA guys ("best head stamps ever dude! he got like 5 in and 2 soccer kicks too that rocked!") get all serious like that its enough to know that an adult choking out a child at school is waaaaay up on the list of Bad Things To Do. Edit : Did some research, my time was too short for a properly applied choke, your time is a guaranteed fatality ;) Although according to the gunther article, the bradycardia choke can result in fluke almost instant deaths. http://www.bjj.org/articles/971014-gunther.htmlhttp://www.bjj.org/articles/971006-choke/
