Ummm... what the fuck?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu9e410C__I

So I knew they were making a The New Mutants movie, which is a tie-in to the X-Men (some of the characters in TNM have appeared in other X-Men movies). However, apparently they are doing it as a...

HORROR MOVIE? Complete with jump scares and what the fuck is that? After watching the trailer, I have no idea what the fuck they are thinking with this.

Very interesting take on the Xmen universe. I kinda like turning the perspective around, so that being a mutant is not a blessing of power but a mark of horror.

By the way, which other TNM's characters have appeared in the other xmen movies? I did not recognize any from the trailer..

Yeah. Picture how regular people would treat them. I mean, I know that's the Xmens whole schtick, but it would be fucking terrifying to find out you had weird powers and that there's a good chance you'll have an "accident" or disappear. So. Being an immigrant in America, basically.

Sunspot was in Days of Future Past. Different actor, though.

I think this could be an interesting take on it. There has to be a reason Mutants are in hiding, and "government is bad, and wants to register the fact you can't level a building by looking at it" does not cut it.

They had a touch of that in the beginning of the X-Men movie with Rogue and Logan wandering in the wilderness. And lets face it, Rogue is living with one hell of a curse.

Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane.  Hmmmmmm.

It doesn't have to be any of those explanations, the movie has both Illyana and Dani.  If they even play it at all close to the actual comics, either one of or both of their powers could cause any of this more or less straight up.  They could legitimately make it a demon infested nightmare illusion in xavier's mansion.

I can't tell that this is related to the X-Men movie franchise in any way from the trailer other than they mention mutants. Which is another reason I'm a bit skeptical because marketing wise, they are missing out on an opportunity to at least grab some of the audience from their other movies (no matter how mediocre the last X-Men movie was).

It's not like I won't watch the movie because it doesn't match what I think it should after all. I just think the horror angle was a weird one to take.

A single google search tells you exactly what the story is.  Not sure where the confusion is coming in here.  Sounds great.

I don't watch horror, so Haem's concerns about alienating part of the audience resonate with me. I won't see it in theaters, but might pick it up when it hits Netflix. As a genre horror's never really interested me and I'm feeling superhero fatigue in general. Together those mean that unless I hear this movie is better than IT (which I've also skipped) I'll give this one a miss.

She's raw, but I don't know that she's bad. I haven't watched her outside of GOT, though, where she's better than Sophie and that may mask some of the problems.

I mean, I think she could get better with experience beyond one character but from what little I've seen (got, couple episode of dr who) it's been very lack lustre. This movie could be good but x-men movies don't get the benefit of the doubt anymore.

I would take her stint on Doctor Who to mean anything because the story they used her in was utter shit.

I didn't watch Legion. Everyone keeps telling me I should, but there were other events happening in my life over the last year. I've had to MAKE time for television and Legion didn't cut it.

Ed: That said, what is your point with Legion? I don't see Maisie or Sophie on the IMDB credits..

I thought of Legion more as surrealism instead of horror. It had more in common with say The Prisoner than it did Pet Semetary.

Horror is a broad category, covering everything from thinly veined torture porn to psychological thrillers.

I have a guess as to how this all plays together, and I think it is going to be very much in line with some of the storylines from the comics, not a total departure.

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.

I thought legion was very pyschological thriller but my judging by my wife's reaction it was pure horror so it's really straddling that line well I'd say.

Waiting to see if there's any nerd protests over Roberto's actor. I'm guessing there won't be.

I don't think it looks bad. I remain unsure about the tilt to the horror genre but I've always had a soft spot for that group of characters. I just don't expect it to mean anything to the MCU, as the whole mutant thing gets rebooted in the next few years anyway.

Went to the drive-in this weekend and watched this with my kids. It's pretty good. Maisie does a great job with Wolfsbane. Cannonball and Magik are great too.  I didn't like Sunspot that much, but his power looked great. Dani Moonstar is the main character and is mostly the audience stand-in so we can learn what his going on along with her.

It is not so much a horror story as it is a story about how young people who gained their powers at puberty have to deal with the trauma caused by their powers hurting others.

The special effects are great and the limited cast gives you a chance to get to know the characters.

If you know the characters and know their powers then

but it shouldn't take away from your enjoyment of the movie.

We hope that they make a sequel or incorporate them into the main Marvel universe. We all agreed that we liked Magik and Wolfsbane the most.

That is extremely unlikely.  New Mutants is about kids.  As this was filmed way back in 2016/17, most of these actors are already adults and physically far matured.  I'm betting we'll see a 'Mutant Phase' in the MCU that has a huge focus on the mutant characters, with X-films and a New Mutant movie/series - but I think the earliest it could come would be 2024, and I'd put my money on it being more along the lines of 2028.  There is a small chance that the Fox X-films may be referenced in the Multiverse of Madness as alternate realities so that they can capitalize upon Hugh Jackman for an Old Man Logan revival (and explain how they're incorporating Deadpool - who I bet will be in the after credit scene for Madness), but I expect 95% of the people from the Fox era, New Mutants included, will be recast with younger actors.

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but this is going to be a one-off I'm sure. I need to see this eventually, but Fox delayed it so many times and Disney seemed unconcerned about its release.

It also reviewed worse than just about any other X-men movie aside from Dark Phoenix. There is no world in which this movie was going to be getting a sequel.

I almost wonder if Feige et al are kind of happy with the pandemic delay--it lets them fully clean out the closet of all this old bad crap and it lets them fully think out how to keep the next phase of MCU films after Shang-Chi and Dr. Strange seems as lively and sustainable as possible.
