So Luc Besson has a new movie coming out. Science fiction/space opera thing in the vein of Fifth Element.

I'm there. Just gorgeous.

Looks great, much anticipation.

But... anyone else getting fed up of leading actors all being children these days? Or is that just me being old?  Get off my lawn!

You being old. The girl is young (24), but the teen looking boy is 30.

It's Besson. I give it a 50/50 chance of being a complete mess.

Unfortunately with Besson my guess would be boring more than a mess these days (based on his work lately). But then again Fifth Element was great and the source material for this is interesting (and nostalgic for me though I'm sure most Americans haven't even heard of it before since it's European) so this could turn out to be good movie.

My worry is that everyone will say "but that's just Star Wars and Avatar imagery." Not knowing that the graphic novel is where those guys lifted the visuals from.

I'm cautiously excited -- lots of bits in the trailer are panels from the comic -- but not crazy about the casting, for Valerian in particular.

Solely responsible for the thread on "The Condom Wall."

I am with you. It didn't bother, but it it looked like the adventures of two teenagers.

I am in my late 30's. It looked like a regular adventure movie to me with normal aged actors.

They aren't teenagers, bu they do look "idealistically" young for 25/30yos.

I was worried that Delevigne was just a vacuous model type trying to act, but after watching Suicide Squad I think she actually has some chops.  I hope Luc gets a Leeloo Dalllas Multipass level performance out of her for this as it looks pretty cool.

BTW, for those who don't know, the albums have been getting reissued one by one in English, about one every four months, for the last couple of years. They are up to around Hypsis now. Pretty nice editions.

The first volume of the 60's comic source material is free on Amazon Kindle right now.

Search for 'City of Shifting Waters' and you should find it pretty easily.

Unfortunately, that's actually not a great entry point for the series as a whole... it was a bit before they found their footing, I think. (It's also technically the second book -- there's a book zero, which I have never actually found. Starting around book 2-3 is where it really clicks.

The movie looks to be based on Ambassador of the Shadows, which is book 6.

The new trailer has me a bit more optimistic.

Actually already ordered it in French. I have been getting the individual volumes in English, and it doesn't look like they'll do that one outside of the hardcovers... and I don't know if I want to get the hardcovers on top of the softbacks. Curse them!

Well, I ordered the first two hardbacks based on your recommendation, so we'll see how they turn out in a few months.  Hope it's not too filled out with film related wank like it's sounding.

My copy of the original first book arrived. In French. I'm out of practice, but it wasn't too bad, I got 85% of it and never had to resort to a translation.

Alright, so Volume 1 showed up finally.  Movie wank is only a couple of pages, so not bad.  Now I just have to find the time to read it, would have been nice if it'd shown up on Friday when I was down sick  Ohhhhh, I see.

edit:  Yup, you're right, the first couple of books are weird, but I'm looking forward to the next volume at least.
