I have wee macros. They say 'Incoming Farm' and shit like that on the raid channel.
It takes nanoseconds.
But, hey, I don't want to fall out over retards fighting on WoW boards.

Last I heard games were all about fun.
Cal, get a life please. When you're wearing chocolate chips and calling in supporting ranged artillery your perspective is dead-on.
When you think a simple game that can be completely re-created the next night has met the same threshold you've lost something valuable that most of us call humanity. And people like that we politely call "Dicks". Impolitely, once the ladies leave the room, it gets bad real fast. I'd happily take someone behind the woodshed if they expressed that opinion under my roof. And feel no remorse when I spent the night in the drunk tank.
Sure the deaf dude was a prick. Gee I wonder if he'd ever run into this sort of genetic-garbage stupidity before... think he might already be primed to react to bigots?
Maybe. Just maybe.
Of course it could also be said deaf dude was just some asshat jacking with the guild. But to a certain degree we have to take even virtual personalities at face value.

I'm no liberal man, and I don't really care for the coddle everyone philosophy that some have.
However, I don't advocate shunning the physically disabled because I don't want to spend a little extra time out of my day of gaming. Seriously, macros take five minutes to set up fully for any BG you're in. Hell, I could do the same for any instance i'm in too. It's sort of the same logic that doesn't have us shooting our wounded in a war. It's counter-productive.

Wanting to be competitive at my chosen persuit does not mean I need to "get a life". I spend my recreational time the way I choose and I hardly see how it could be open for comment unless I'm breaking the law. Seriously, I shouldn't even have to explain this shit here. I enjoy playing a certain way, therefore that is how I play. Also you are only looking on one side of the coin. Like I said I will go out of my way to an extent, then I stop. I told you where I stop and just because you think it's short doesn't make me a dick. Frankly, it's obvious we come at this from different because people who take your stance I politely call "Dicks". You are entitled to essential services and then what people are willing to give. To expect more is selfish. Yeah yeah, your view is right and mine is wrong. Don't bother.

If we're talking about a deaf dude geting kicked out of his guild because he couldn't communicate on voice com, then I'm with Calantus. My guild just as a lot of other guilds kicks people who refuse/can't use voice com, and even if the guy is deaf we won't let an entire guild adapt to 1 guy. I'm sorry but you're naive if you think some macros are even close to the power that voice com brings. It doesn't only take team play to another level but it's also much more fun to be able to talk to the people you're playing with. Call me a selfish "dick" or whatever but when pay and play something on my free time I won't reduce my fun to adapt to someone handicaped.

Yes, please don't let the handicapped get in the way of your fun. We'll just make sure to put them in a box where you don't have to think about or interact with them.
Seriously, sometimes I wonder if you people actually read some of the cut-throat shit you type on this board.

Hey, I don't have any problems with handicaped people in general, I would have no problems playing with a blind guy if he's a good player and willing to use voice com. If I were handicaped I wouldn't want an entire guild to adapt to me, in this guys case I would simply join a guild who doesn't use voice com. In fact I know that a lot of handicaped people don't want to get special treatment everywhere.

Look, I have nothing against handicap people. I have issues with people in general. Honestly, as long as I do not have to see or interact with them then I am happy. Let someone else deal with them. I like this box idea.

I'm still giggling about the fact you wouldn't mind playing with a blind guy on voice comms.

I gotta comment on this. In one of my old old guilds there was a huge divide between people with voice comms and those without. Everyone who was on the comms would hardly ever talk in /g unless it was to link items. We'd have to say "are you guys reading guild/raid/party chat?" just to make sure they actually read something if it was important, otherwise some would miss it. Then you'd often see groups where everyone was either on vent or off vent, people who were on vent related better and grouped more often, people without vent related with eachother better and grouped more often. We even had one guy quit because he got sick of his questions being ignored accidently (all the officers had vent). One day we were in the core clearing some lava packs and he explodes with "FUCK THIS NOBODY EVER READS CHAT VENTRILO IS THE WORST THING EVER TO HAPPEN TO THIS GUILD" and then he /gquit. I had to scroll up to see what the hell set him off 'cause I'd missed it.

People should also bear in mind that we have a larger percentage of Language Issues on the European servers.

I think that adds some spice to vent. For example we have a bunch of people from iceland, and they have a really funy accent. In the begining some people had problems geting their point across on vent, but it didn't take long before everyone started talking more or less fluently.

I just look at it as "what are the results?" I wouldn't kick people strictly for not using a tool. If their performance was such that they needed to be kicked, then do it for that reason. This guy could perhaps perform just fine by picking up on subtle visual keys that non-deaf people can't. I dunno.
This guy may be able to play just fine without voice. I would have just waited until it was painfully clear he couldn't perform (caused too many wipes, etc.) Then made that the reason for dismissal. Or, just stop inviting him to groups and he'll get the picture pretty quickly and leave on his own accord.
I certainly wouldn't require everyone in the guild to stop using voice chat for one person. That is just not very realistic.

I think I missed the bit where anyone said this... It wasn't, but from what people were saying, i.e. "This wouldn't be fair to the rest," I thought it was implied. Otherwise, why say that? Would anyone really say, "This is totally unfair. I don't want to use voice chat, but Bobby is the only one that doesn't have to because he's deaf!" My point was, let him play without it. If he sucks due the lack of voice chat, then he'll be left out of groups without ever having to bring the drama. Then the question would be, "Why do you leave me out of groups." The answer would be very simple and without any reference to a disability. It would be, "Because you suck!"

i think what people are trying to say is that Voice Chat and Text Chat need not be magicly mutually exclusiive.
Any guild who sets up a vent server, starts using it, and then completely ignores everything in the in game guild chat channel is just asking for trouble in my opinion.

Actually what happens is, during combat nobody reads the chat channels. There are plenty of people who either never speak on the mic unless forced or do not even have the ability to speak on the mic. Therefore guild/raid chat is used often during raid downtimes, and almost always for loot division I would imagine. But during combat the likelyhood of something important being missed in the chat channels is quite good and therefore it is frowned upon for someone to not be logged unto vent to hear important exclimations.

I've spent a ton of time using teamspeak to pvp, and the action is fast enough and the words in the headset are coming fast enough that I rarely notice the chat box at all. In fact, it is difficult to associate the chat that I do manage to read with the words in the headset, i.e. Voice Chat: "Who needs help?!" /g Chat: "Farm" When I hear one then read the other, they do not connect in my mind, and I assume this happens to a lot of others (at least in my experience 90% of the people I pvp with are the same way). So the above conversation makes literally no sense to me, the "Farm" and the "Who needs help" are processed in such drastically different ways in my mind that they end up being different conversations and have no connection. Now all of that being said, my penis is plenty large enough that I'm willing to take a disadvantage and lose sometimes because of this long before I'd kick someone out of my guild for having a major disability like being a mac user or even being deaf. Hell I've never been in a guild where 100% of the people are on teamspeak, we've usually only gotten like 30% or so of the people, granted they will be the most effective 30% and having that group can make or break a battle, but no where near 100%. Of course I'd label all my guilds as "casual" guilds, not hardcore guilds. I also label myself as "casual" even though I typically spend 3-4 hours a day in game on the weekdays and even more on the weekends.. and the time I'm not in game on the weekdays I usually spend reseraching the best way to min/max my character (I am very much a min/maxer, ohh noes, the horror!)..

In the newer games like WoW especially, the chat box is secondary. It's superfluous. If you've ever seen me in or WoW or CoH, I miss guild chat all the damn time. The action in front of my character takes up all or most of my attention. The chat box is a fucking dinosaur and needs to be replaced. Unless you are deaf, at which point at least your computer doesn't need a sound card.

I absolutely refuse to use Teamspeak or Ventrilo in any game. Sorry, I have absolutely no interest in listening to 12 year-olds yell at me or sit in front of my computer yelling at it like a retard.

People on Teamspeak every time they login ignore guildchat. It's something I've noticed as I'm in a guild with people where half use it all the time and half don't. I don't use it except on the weekends after the kids are in bed because it means I can't hear them otherwise. This means I don't get into groups or guild raids during the week without spamming Guildchat until someone noticies it. We've lost a number of members who said 'nobody answers my questionis' because they were asking them in Guildchat. It's really the people to blame.

Yeah, but again I have a different experience. I'm on Vent with the Raid Guild and I still have my eye on the chatbox for party chat, general chat and guild.
