Trailer is pretty glorious:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96EChBYVFhU

Comes out in April.  Looks like some good (simple but complex) sci-fi fun.  Exploring a few interesting philosophical conflicts through the lense of a FPS basically.  It hearkens back to some classics wherein the husband or wife "dies" and the other does whatever it takes to bring them back or keep them alive.  In this case, the deceased gets augmented and then the shit hits the fan of course.

It's at 90% on RT.   Gives me a bit of a Bill The Galactic Hero vibe, only without the camp.
The reviews remind me of what happened after the critics saw Mad Max.  It's seemingly that good.

Looks fun, however I wonder if I'll get sick of that pov about 5 minutes in.

I've seen the trailer 3 times, including once in the theater before Deadpool. It's wearing-thin already, but I'm also old.

When I first saw the trailer on Thursday, I thought it was an independent film. Seeing that it was getting wide-release was a shock and I hope it does well enough to prove that fresh ideas CAN make money.

I don't know about this one. The POV gimmick wore thin on me in the trailer, and it makes it look very indie and not in a good way.

That POV seems like it'd only work for about 10 minutes outside porn.

Concerned about motion sickness on this one. I like the idea in principle. Don't know if I could watch a whole movie like this.

I hated Cloverfield and so forth, so I was leery also.  But really, the reviews are staggeringly positive.
If they inject a bit of Max Payne with a healthy dose of artistry sans shaky cam, it could work.

I'm hoping for a Deus Ex romance in POV, basically.

I am pretty sure the nine minutes of Doom was more then enough fps view.

Pretty sure this is one I have to watch on the small screen, as the FPS gimmick gave me a headache in just a couple of minutes of trailer before Deadpool.

Pass...

Has PoV ever worked in movies? I mean PoV throughout the whole thing? Found footage IMHO is different. This looks horrible.

It's the same people that did this, right?

If so, I'm on board, but I agree that a full movie's worth of pov might be too much.

It had a distinct DX:HR feel to it in the trailer, which is a positive, but I'm not sold on the whole "watch this guy play an FPS with a story for MOVIE_LENGTH" gimmick.

I hated the trailer, at any rate. I was sick of the POV after 3 minutes of it.

Actually Deadpool had some of the most absolute trash trailers before a film that I can remember seeing. Makes me wonder if that was a sign of how much the studios expected the film to do poorly...

The worst part for me was the sets. They all looked like they were made of cardboard.

The PoV kills it for me. It was shitty for the few minutes in Doom, so a whole movie full of that doesn't look fun to me. I'll still probably give it a go just because I would like it to work out as a new PoV isn't necessarily a bad thing, I just don't have high hopes for it.

The PoV thing might work better if there is more 'lower action' stuff.  when you piggyback all the action like that, it looks dumb.  I think a better trailer would have been a continuous segment of 30 seconds from the film that builds up to a sample of the action, not 2 seconds from every action scene slammed together.

That'd be a better trailer.... but it'd still be for a dumb movie with bad sets, weird acting choices, horrible dialpgue, bad costumes and a seemingly nonsensical storyline.

I thought it was great in Doom, because it was clever and not over-done.

It wasn't that it was overdone. I just found that the first time I saw it, it was a nice homage to the game. The second time, after the nostalgia wore off, it felt and looked horrible.

So I saw this Friday night. I got past the gimmick of 1st person mentally before seeing it, and I've got to admit it was REALLY fun. There were places that were as cheesy and eye-rolling as you'd expect in any sort of superhuman video game plot, but it still was entertaining.

It doesn't present itself as more than it is: a ridiculous over-the-top romp and reason to show tits, violence, and a lot of cheesy effects.

10/10 for what it is. If you expect more from movies you'll give it a 4/10 because it's too lowbrow for you. Go to an arthouse.

Merusk speaks the truth.  I just saw this at George R.R. Martin's theatre in Santa Fe.  I thought it was damned awesome tbh.  Sharlto Copley was typically brilliant.  In some ways, you could see this as his best performance to date;  Oscarworthy in some sense.  For F13, it's a must-see given the twisted fucks on this forum.   awesome, for real

My problem?  I got sick about halfway through, but I'm not sure if it was because of the shitty brisket I had or the movie itself.
This was the toughest movie, physically, for me to watch of my entire life.  And I'm a sea captain that has never gotten seasick.  It WILL challenge your equilibrium.  There is very little steady-cam.

Not sure what the recent critics are looking at (especially compared with the original release reviews), because the film is plenty "highbrow" as far as film goes.  I think the FPS gimmick takes away from some of the finer cinematic moments, but those moments are still there if you can bring yourself to see them.  The dialogue is simple and to the point, but the imagery is very very well done...  downright artful in a lot of areas, in a Max Payne kinda way.  The brothel sequence was pure win; shades of Mad Maxx and unadulterated hate of life.  "Destroyer-Class" yas!  The overarching trope of the movie (which isn't realized into the end) gives it plenty of gravitas, without needing words to express.

Also, this is not a simple action movie.  It is complete (though not hard) sci-fi.  I was actually taken aback by the biotech.; it's fairly aggressive.  So if that's not your thing, probably don't bother watching.

They also don't skimp on the gore.  The makers thought of what a metahuman could do to flesh... and they show it.  And holy shit, there are some fine specimens of eastern euro women in this.  A few kick some ass too.

Lastly, it felt original to me.  It did break some ground in film-making imo; it's not simply a Doom or Cloverfield redux.  It does a way better job.

I watched this movie Saturday evening and I REALLY enjoyed it. Like others have said don't go into it looking for anything resembling a complicated story. And while it really doesn't take itself very serious to me that just adds to the fun.

The action comes fast and doesn't really stop throughout the movie (really hard finding a spot to hit the bathroom if you have been drinking). While I didn't have any problems with the shaky cam it does take quite a bit for me to get sick for some that might be a problem. It will be interesting how well this movie does there was a total of 6 people in the showing I went to with my buddy.

Overall as a action flick I would give it a 8/10 and I would watch it again on netflix / tv.

I like this movie though it is kinda pointless. Like plot wise no reason for any of the following events to happen beyond the first 5 minutes of the movie. The definition of dumb fun that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I think a lot of people are like me: "It looks like fun, but no way I could make it through 2 hours of that in a theater." When I can view it on a small screen, with a pause button, I look forward to it.

My 14 year old daughter and I liked it. The twist at the end was unexpected and the reason for the different outfits on Sharlto Copley was very sci-fi. It is definitely not for anyone who has motion sickness. There were parts in the movie where you react to what is happening as if it is happening to yourself. Good combination of sound and motion that makes it pop on the screen.

Do not take anyone who is grossed out by graphic violence. There are some very graphic scenes. At least two of them made me turn away.

The action was unique, fun, and well executed. Which is basically the only reason to go to the movie. So if you like that then its worth a view. Everything else is secondary really. There is enough downtime between action pieces that the entire thing flows really well. Technically its amazingly executed in terms of stuns. Almost more importantly the editing is superb (deserves an Oscar) for a number of reasons involving fight/action rhythm as well as continuity editing*

On the non-action side; there are a couple of really really good jokes, the acting is competent to good, you will say "is that Tim Roth?" followed my many minutes later "Yea, that was Tim Roth"

Worth pointing out for some audiences: there is significant nudity and gore.

The POV didn't bother me but i can see how it might for some people. Sitting closer to the screen might actually help since the FOV is fairly wide.

*the movie drops a lot of frames in order to keep things moving. In a non-first person movie this probably wouldn't work, because it makes everything seem frantic and overly fast. But you will largely not notice it unless you're looking. On the continuity side they managed to cut the duration of a lot of the chases down while still respecting direction of action/movement (with a camera on a dudes head no less) which is really amazing.

I could barely get through Cloverfield, so I'm a bit worried about this.  I think I'll wait until I can watch it at home and turn it off if it isn't working for me instead of going to the theater and paying a bunch to see a movie I might have to leave.

Most dangerous things in the world:

5) "Hey, watch this!"

4) A woman who says everything is "Fine".

3) Mr. Hand Grenade.

2) Stupid people in groups.

1) Crazy Russians with a GoPro.

Fun movie. Definitely glad I watched it on a small screen, I would have been puking my guts out in a theater.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Watching it on tv with a group of friends was definitely
The way to go. The comic relief from Copley's character was a big plus.
