The wife is into this show and I'm finding I enjoy it as well.  It is basically an hour sitcom with a few original parody type songs included in each episode.

Rachel Bloom is the star.  If you want to know if this is up your alley, look at the video that put her on the map: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1IxOS4VzKM

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Yeah, this show is great.  Never heard of Rachel Bloom til the show came out, but the songs were pretty funny and kept me interested.

She went to college with one of my former monkeys. I met her at a house party he threw, she's funny as hell in person too.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

Was bored so I binge watched all the episodes.  Not my cup of tea, but I did pay attention when they did the songs.  Some of which were really funny and good.

Good for her to win the GG.  I think she's going to be big.  Next Melissa McCarthy.

With the proper diet, she can be.

Thanks for the low hanging deep fried fruit.

Speaking of McCarthy, now that she's lost half of herself, she has about as much appeal as skinny Jonah Hill.

The logic on this is so bizarre. First, the only reason McCarthy ever got paid was because she was fat. Now that she is famous and has money in the bank, she decides to lose the weight. Her work opportunities will now suffer.  Second, she couldn't lose the weight before?

My post was a fat joke. I mean, an accurate fat joke, but still a fat joke. I'm not entirely sure what shiznitz's post is, but let's take it seriously for NO REASON AT ALL. Of course she could lose the weight before. She didn't. Which means she could get cast in comedic roles and still be the fat girl that can deliver a line. Hollywood takes all people. Now she can't get cast as the fat girl that can deliver a line. She's the medium, probably soon to be skinny girl, and let's be honest - there is no shortage of skinny girls in Hollywood that can deliver a line.

If she's really dedicated to her craft she could always put the weight back on. For the right role.

Both women have trimmed. McCarthy will have to see what she can do as she gets older, skinnier and less unique. That is Hollywood. Bloom, with her ongoing show, her musical ability, her edge, her willingness to display herself and her youth is likely to do a bit better with the weight loss and her career.

Not fair, but likely true.

For my part, I liked McCarthy most in the roles in which her weight was not a featured element... mostly prior to her breaking big.

She has literally not had one of those. Even Gilmore Girls made the weight relevant.

That is all I was trying to say. Lots of roles for "Hollywood" bodies and some roles for overweight bodies. Very little for in between. Good for her for losing the weight buit it will harm her career.

Here and there,, but in general I disagree.  For the most part, her weight did not drive story in GG.

She was the fat friend that found love before Lorelai. So uh, I have no clue what show you were watching.

She was fat.  She was a friend.  She found love before Lorelai.

However, she didn't have storylines that revolved around her being fat.   Mike and Molly build stories around the weight of the main characters - a lot of stories.  That is not what they did in Gilmore Girls.  The role could have been played by a 'Plain Jane' actress without the story being radically different.  They didn't talk about her diets, her troubles with being a fat girl, or any of that other crap.

No, they didn't overtly point it out to idiots because it wasn't a show for idiots. But to pretend that the fat friend who was also a had-no-issue-with-devouring-her-own-food chef, wasn't chosen for reasons that were pretty obvious from the get go, is basically willful blindness on your part.

It could not have been the Plain Jane actress, though it's cute that you think that would have worked.

Yes. The writing is so good that the premise is not a detraction. Watch a few episodes.

We'll agree to disagree. I see a huge difference in how her size factored in on Gilmore Girls and her later works. If you do not, schild, ... well, there is a reason you name is 83% child.

Gilmore Girls is exceptional. It's basically just small town West Wing.

I was hoping you'd make this personal so I could point out that while your fat blindness may be admirable, it makes for really shitty criticism of television. Also, quit moving the fucking goal posts. It was relevant there and it's relevant in her future roles, the degree of relevance does not matter even a little.

Right. Her use in Mike and 'Look how funny fat people are' is the same as Gilmore Girls.  Check.

I don't think you're getting it. She has gotten, very likely, every role she has had because she is a not ugly fat girl. If she was merely a not ugly skinny girl, she would not have had a chance at starting a career in Hollywood.

I disagree.  And, incidentally, so does the person that cast her in Gilmore Girls.

http://deadline.com/2015/06/gilmore-girls-amy-sherman-palladino-melissa-mccarthy-atx-tv-festival-1201438837/

Quote
It wasn’t that people didn’t like her, but she was a different energy,” Palladino explained. “She was a different kind of chick. The part was just written for a woman — there was no body type, there was nothing specific about it. I was just like, ‘I need someone who’s funny and can really act.’ Just funny doesn’t get me anything, because I need her to be able to cry and be heartbroken and be in a relationship, so it was a tricky sell. It took a while.”

This was the first major continuing role of her career.

The writer's opinion on casting is not relevant. The director cast a large woman for the role on purpose.

You apparently do not know who Amy Sherman-Palladino is in relation to Gilmore Girls.

She was show runner and wrote almost every episode of the first 6 seasons.  To relate it to the NFL, she was the coach and GM.  She had to fight with ownership to do what she wanted, but she was - from a create standpoint - fully in charge.  She didn't direct the pilot, but if you think anyone outside of the studio business folks had the capability to overrule her.... you're just flat out wrong.

Yes, because writers always come out and say "I need a funny fat friend." Because that's a smart play.

I'm right.  When *all* the evidence supports what you say, you tend to think you're right.

Now, I have to ask you the same question.

Your assumption is that ASP went out of her way to lie here.  Really?  You've watched her shows.  That is who you think she is?   Looking at the stories she crafter in GG, Bunheads and even that disappoint Jezebel James show... that is the conclusion you want to suckle?  Ok....

And you think she was looking for a "fat friend" despite never crafting a storyline over the character's weight?  No diet story... no health scare... never called fat, even?  Ok....

If you look at all the evidence and dismiss it just because it doesn't match your initial assumption, there is no point in debating.
