2/10 WOULD NOT INGEST

I have always hated playing games while drunk, even back when I loved being drunk more than anything in the world.  Games, however, fill the void left during my childhood by [REDACTED].

Currently Diablo 3, or Path of Exile, or Borderlands 2, or even Destiny.  I'm hoping to add Just Cause 3 to that list before year end, since Just Cause 2 did that but has come and gone.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Awesome thread, props to Khaldun for this.

In the past three years the game has been MechWarrior Online. It is slow enough not to make me feel pathetic even when I am completely out of it, and it's full of giant robots which always feel like home.
Before that, MMORPGs were amazing at the job: nothing like mindlessly grinding for hours with that background feeling of growth to keep it one notch away from a complete waste of time or from focusing too much about what was wrong with real life. Delusion at its best. Lineage 2 played a very meaningful role in that sense around 2004.

This also reminds me of something that happened to me in 2006. I spilled boiling oil (just a bit) on my hand one night while cooking AND playing EverQuest 2, and since I was already very depressed for a difficult and major breakup and didn't have anything in the house to properly take care of the burn, I decided to just keep playing EQ2 to distract myself from the pain until I passed out, and it worked.

In the 90s it was definitely one of the many many versions of Championship Manager/Football Manager, blowing my mind up with vague numbers and hidden calculations meant to give an illusion of control over chaos. Occasionally I resorted to cheating when the outcome of the games started feeling too arbitrary and the analgesic effects of the game were actually turning into the equivalent of wine gone bad.

In the 80s my to-go game was this Star Wars for Amiga. It was endless and endlessly satisfying. Psychedelic looking enough, epic, and most importantly fast, precise (or so it felt at the time) and mouse based, hinting at what would have become a major addiction later in my life: First Person Shooters.

As I said in the original thread, I was using 7 Days to Die to get through a tough new technology implementation with an Italian vendor (he didn't bring boobs, so it wasn't Falc).

It got to the point where I would tell my coworkers I'd had enough and was going home to stab zombies in the face.

I'm sure it'll come as no surprise to anyone that for a year now it's been Minecraft.

When I'm sober and sane I can tackle the complex intricacies of fusion reactors, storage systems, genetically engineered bees, arcane labyrinths and advanced cow murdering machines. When I'm sober and insane I kinda do the same but with more architecture thrown in. When I'm drunk I build daft shit that I tear down the following morning, or summon incredibly dangerous demons that beat the crap out of me which I can then try and find and contain the following morning before they destroy my world.

Kerbal Space Program also works really well. As a bourbon replacement I can build unlikely-looking rockets and planes and crash them hilariously. Combined with alcohol I can try to build more reasonable craft with specific goals in mind (I'm gonna land on all of Jool's moons this time, for sure!) and crash them hilariously.

I rarely drink... mostly at xmas when I drink a bit of anisette or something while making pizzelles... but I love playing MMOs when I'm stoned.  The more high I get, the more hilarious it all seems.  Especially the MMOs that have a busy chat channel.  I am very funny when I'm stoned, you know.  At least I think I am.

UO was the apotheosis, the perfect match: returning home after an "intense" drinkin' night, then fooling around at the bank (or Trinsic west entrance, or any other place) was just great  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

When I'm playing Football Manager drinkin' is simply not contemplated: FM is serious stuff, my players and board wouldn't approve that kind of behaviour, and I also have to set a good example for them so that they perform better on the pitch.

I don't have any games like this anymore and it makes me sad. There's just not enough brainless don't-think non-twitch games out there that I enjoy.

I think Star Wars Battlefront might wind-up as that game, but it'll have to be on a console. I'm getting pains in my wrist when mousing these days and sitting on a task chair for hours is no longer a viable option as it makes my ass hurt.

Usually a MMO.  There's always something brainless you can do.  Speaking of, since my FFXIV crew seems to have stopped playing, I'll probably need to pick up something from the free to play offerings.  GW2 and Wildstar are a bit too twitchy for relaxing play.  HMMM.

I guess I don't really have a "go to" comfort game outside of whatever I'm playing at the moment.  This has kind of always been the case.  I've never been one to play games, outside of MMOs, for long stretches of time, and I don't really like playing many games at once.

It's always easy to just pick something in my "nostalgia" category on Steam, install it, and then play it until I'm bored of it.  Like what I'm currently doing with Deus Ex: HR.

Minecraft has been it for me, since I quit WoW. Haven't had an MMO scratch the itch for long in a while, and wouldn't have time for one anymore.

Voids must be filled.  What games do you use to do this?

For example, playing Gran Turismo or another racing simulator would make me too sad, since I'm forced to drive a Silverado for a while.  I'm also not sure if my G37 will perform the same.

Wait, if we're just supposed to be doing games we play instead of drinking then I play a game called How Long Til I Can Have A Drink FFS?

Hmmm.  Right.  Now that I understand the question, I wish to hell I had an answer.  I don't currently have any games filling that void.  I dearly desire an RPG to do so, but they all swing and miss.

The best I can come up with is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, but that doesn't seem to suck me in for long anymore. Maybe Dwarf Fortress, if the ennui is strong enough.

Threads like this remind me how terribly I miss City of Heroes.

(Un)fortunately life has been too busy for me to have any voids to fill lately. Even the tequila in my cupboard's been left unopened for two weeks now.

I hadn't really thought about it, I guess the game I play most in that kind of situation is Divinity: Dragon Commander.  Something about the combination of really pulpy between mission content and really grindy in-game action makes it a good "take your mind off things" game for me.

Heroes of the Storm is my fallback when I'm feeling melancholy. Takes my mind off of important things and gives me something immediate and harmless to vent at. As a depressant alcohol will cause me to spiral downwards towards somewhere dark, unless I have friends with me to take the edge off.

Good thread.

Oh, instead of drinking?  I guess point and click adventure problem solving games.  But there aren't many that are any good and they're usually short.  So I guess those instead of binge drinking.

This is going to sound ridiculous but so long as you ignore all the (usually optional) blathering phone calls and the G rated vibe the Nancy Drew games are actually very good.  Decent puzzles, not too much pixel hunting crap, good visuals and sound, semi interesting characters and plot, logical inventory use.  Each game I wish Nancy would finally bring along a gun or knife since she gets murdered so often in so many obvious ways though...

Civ V, weirdly enough, would be for me a time-eater intended to keep my mind off of other shit.

edit: Oh, I forgot I suggested this idea in the other thread. Must have been the glass of bourbon I'd had.

Football Manager 2010 for me. Beating Real Madrid in the Champions League Final with Dorchester Town never gets old.

Oh, instead of drinking? Yeah, Football Manager again, or....I boot up Steem (Atari ST emulator) and start hopping between a gazillion games I used to play in my childhood (from Chrono Quest to Purple Saturn Day and more), actually with a big smile on my face instead of a "damn I'm old" attitude :)

Space seems to feature heavily in this proposition. It used to be 'start a new game of EV Nova'

then it was Freelancer, which I just lazily traded and adventured my way around until i was robust enough to see the edges of the galaxy and trade with the Corsairs

Two kinda stressful weeks has reminded me of one to contribute -- Left 4 Dead. The original one. I liked the second one just fine, but the first just hits that zen spot of perfect zombie murder.

And if that gets boring I switch to Orbiter. Technically not a game, but an honest to God spaceflight simulator. Getting lost in orbital mechanics can make you forget everything else, for a while....

I was drunk during almost every raid I led in WoW. It was the only way I could tolerate leading people on raids.
