Pixar's latest. Getting strong reviews. Casting Lewis Black as anger is on point.

Trailer for those who haven't seen it

I keep seeing the commercial on every TV channel with one of the reviews its quoting, saying "The best idea Pixar ever had", and all I can continually think is that they wholesale ripped off the FOX TV show from the 1990's, Herman's Head.

Still could be entertaining, but I also specifically warned my sister about this movie and how a child might think this is how their interior dialog/thinking actually works, leading to discussion of it possibly exhibiting, encouraging or leading to multiple personality disorder. My 5 year old nephew now won't see this until after sis has a chance to screen it.

Yup!  I loved that show.  I was 10 when it premiered (1991) and had no problem at all understanding the concept.  Obviously 5 year olds aren't 10 year olds and I am not a child psychologist, but it seems a little alarmist to say that exploring the concept of conflicting emotions this way is going to confuse/damage children.

That was exactly my first thought of this as well.

Yep, the same. Although they've changed them to emotions rather than personality traits.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman's_Head  I suppose it's not all that original a concept, but HH was the only time I've seen it in media.

That said, nothing in the trailers is making me interested in going to see it. Disney needs to fire whoever's doing their non-Marvel marketing. It's all sucked this year.

You must be fun at parties.
My nephew is Autistic, and my sister works in Special Education.

I was mostly concerned that a child already not able to control their moods/emotions would have negative effects from this movie, and my sister who agreed with me about it, and afterward was when we mentioned/discussed MPD.

I still think it's worthy of mentioning to posters here with children young enough, that they should be aware of this, especially because of how it would/could affect their emotional reactions and imprint on children developing (or acting out).

Also figured some of you asshats would react this way, but totally expect there will be a front page press lead in the weeks surrounding this movie, mirroring this exact topic combined with this movie.

I'm also quite fun at parties, with enough alcohol and back pain meds.

They could have ripped off herman's head wholesale and it would not matter.  They didn't but even if they had, this movie is....it's as fucking good as pixar gets.  Comparing it to herman's head is like saying Van Gough was ripping off cave paintings, this movie just gets very, very fucking deep.

If you have to say anything negative it's probably way too advanced in concept for anyone under 12.  Little kids may enjoy some of the silly antics but they aren't going to get the core concepts at all.  I watched it with adults and had to explain a lot of the symbolism they worked into it.

So you knew you'd get the snarky comments but still left out a huge piece of context to post a half gotcha reply? Again, fun at parties.

I shouldn't need to post my family history, and thought the reasoning behind it was worthy of discussing without telling personal family details, but since some asshat made this about me and not the proposed discussion point(s), I did post that information anyway.

This still could've been discussed without my posting that, but none of you actually wanted to, instead lets just point and make snarky comments about the poster, not the post. Which basically is equivalent to saying, "fuck you".

Also, BTW, fuck you.

It managed to have the biggest weekend opening for an original movie (beating Avatar) and still came second to Jurassic World.

This movie was fucking good. It's sheer genius in that my 6 year old was wildly entertained while 85% of it went over her head. It had a 3 minute action sequence on abstract thought! Maybe I'm just a simple fucker, but it made me tear up over a fuzzy pink elephant looking invisible friend. (Also fuck you Pixar for getting me emotionally invested in a love story about two volcanos).

You may want to avoid this film if you have depression and childhood trauma issues.

The core concept of this movie was solid, and it has the Pixar feels, but it only ended up being OK. The key moments were there and worked well, but the remaining hour of the movie was just kinda filled in with fairly random action/adventure stuff, that didn't really seem to fit and felt empty/overstuffed at the same time. I feel like they missed the opportunity for a great to amazing movie had they explored the central idea more.

I thought it was pretty "meh". Had a nice start but went straight into average territory shortly after. Don't understand the praise it has been getting. Not one of their better movies.

I see a lot of people analyzing the plot of the short and that's....not really the point.  Sometimes you just make something like that to be pretty and sweet, you don't start analyzing how a volcano somehow pops back up through the power of love.

To paraphrase Disgust:  "It's like we F13 don't doesn't learn anything!"

The movie was fine, although I didn't think it was their best movie, more middle of the pack.  Incredibles is still my favorite, followed by Nemo.

The best gag (other than Anger sneaking in a gay joke) was the short glimpses into everyone's heads at the end.  Particularly the cat.

(I also liked the short.)
